I know what you mean, Sherry!! Today I told my wife that I was going to the Theodore Payne Native Plant Sale on Friday. She told me that she has no problem with it as long as I don't spend any money...LOL! So I have been going through their plant inventory and carefully picking out the plants I may be interested in. At least, my wife told me that she would go with me to the Fullerton Arboretum on Sunday!!
Have a good day!!!
Thanks,
Chuck
Fall California Native and Rare Plant Sales
Chuck, by the pond at the arboretum is a nice place to picnic.....
Chuck, they do have wagons with which to carry your plants out to the parking lot, so if you see one, grab it quick. You may see one out in the lot that someone is going to have to take back up to the arboretum, if so, grab that one.
Yes, and don't leave your cart unattended. Someone swiped one of my plants last Saturday and I didn't realize it until I got home. :-( Never happened before, but when you get larger numbers of people, an icky one or two is bound to get in there. I did see one volunteer admonish someone who reached for a plant in a cart. Actually, she warned him he might regret it!
That's awful!! Aren't gardeners suppose to be the best of people? I hope you hadn't already paid for it too. And I'm glad it wasn'r my Roger's Red they swiped! Was it a plant that they didn't have many of?.
Oh, no, I hadn't paid, thank goodness! It just takes me so long to make my choices - back and forth, back and forth - it's a real pain to have one of them disappear. Don't remember if it was in short supply or not - in fact, I've forgotten what it was now! lol
I suspect someone just saw it and thought, "I want that."
Yes, it's a good thing they didn't take your Roger - there were only three and this was the best one!
I'm so blessed!
I confess! I don't know what 'Roger's Red' is? Is it something that I should be looking for at the Fullerton Arboretum? The clencher of these Native Plant sales is that I have nine plants coming from High Country Gardens this week. I will be busy planting as soon as they come!!
I don' t like to wish my life away but I hope Friday comes soon...LOL!! I have my eyes on aquilegia formosa (Western Columbine), Heuchera 'Wendy', Eriogonum crocatum, Eriogonum fasciculatum ( I already have three of these). and Solidago confinis (Yellow Butterfly Weed). I will have to see if they have some of these so I can make a decision about what to buy (they were all listed on the Plant Inventory as of October 4).
Did I hear anyone say that there is a pre-sale list of plants that will be offered at the Fullerton Arboretum Plant Sale this year? Will any plants be left on Sunday Oct 14? I would like to go on Saturday but we are Seventh-Day Adventist and that is our Sabbath.
Thanks, everybody!!
Chuck
Chuck,
Vitis californica 'Roger's Red' - native CA grape vine. Yes, you MUST have it! lol The name comes from the beautiful red color it turns at the end of summer into fall. I haven't had any grapes yet, but they are said to be tasty but small - the birds love them. We have ours growing on our ramada and hope it will eventually cover it.

Kathleen
Kathleen, isn't that the one you were going to give me for my birthday?!?!?!!? JK.
I remember talking to you about that grape when you were here. Definitely would fit in just fine here on our grape arbor.
Weegy! Where ya been? I thought you would have Roger romping across your arbor by this time. :-)
It's definitely a winner in my book, though ours has been sooooo slow. Two possible reasons: our compacted soil and I remembered that we put it in a wire basket to protect it from gophers. I recently read somewhere to leave a hole at the bottom of the basket and just make it deep enough to discourage the little *&^%$!s. This past spring, I figured out a watering schedule that seemed to help, though.
Good to hear from you.
Kathleen
K, I plant absolutely everything in wire and leave no hole at the bottom. It hasn't slowed anything down in growth and there have been a few of the gophers' favorites that they still manage to get into. I wouldn't trust leaving a hole in the bottom.
Thanks Sherry. As a rule, I can't get DH to make the baskets anymore anyway, but I would insist or buy them for something special.
I've been MIA! Ummmmmm, who's Roger?!?!!?!?
I'd really like to find one of those red leaf grapes though, it would be a great contrast to what we have now.
The plumeria you brought me is doing wonderfu, btw. I'm now trying to grow plumeria from seeds with very good guidance from my plumie guru. I just love planting seeds and then seeing them come up and then finally bloom. I sure hope these little guys make it.
Weegy,
Vitis californica 'Roger's Red' - aka "Roger"
My plumie is going gangbusters, too. Had hoped for blooms, but didn't get them and now the temps have dropped so I'll have to wait until next year. I saw the same grower's plants at HD for $30, so we done good, girl!
Yup we done good! Usually Home Depot is pretty reasonable. I've gotten 2 from there but now whether they're true to name, we'll just have to see.
Ah ha...Roger...got it now!
Hi Everyone,
The Lake Hodges Native Plant Club in San Diego is having a sale on November 3rd. I'm not familiar with them so I'm not sure what to expect.
The flyer says 'native plants, succulents, house plants, seeds, bulbs'. The sale is at 11986 Bernardo Plaza Drive in the Rancho Bernardo area of San Diego.
Has anyone ever been?
First I've heard of this group, TL. Their web site is nice. Looks like they are active, though no hint how large a group it is.
Native Here Nursery in Berkeley, CA is having their fall sale next weekend.

Thanks, spidra!! I was hoping we would get some information about Northern California's plant sales also. This sounds like a really interesting sale. I wonder if it is anything like the KPFK Christmas Fair with native plants added...LOL. It sounds like a lot of fun.
Thanks again for sharing,
Chuck
Dear TLeaves,
Sorry about not responding earlier. It sounds like another good plant sale that you were emailing about. I ended up not going to Theodore Payne Native Plant Foundation because the person I spoke to on the phone said "it will be a zoo tomorrow!!" Instead I bought the seeds from them. I have never planted a Native Plant from seed before but it sounds like a good thing to learn. I went to Fullerton Arboretum today (just got home about an hour ago). My wife and I were there about two hours only. However, in that time, I have learned so much about native plants. I was pleased to notice that I already had some of the plants they displayed. Also I was impressed by the knowledge of the volunteer sales person. My wife (Loida) enjoyed it too. We both did a little research on the classes that they offer at Fullerton Arboretum. My father and his girlfriend live about ten minutes away from Fullerton so we just had lunch with them. They were surprised to see us and the chicken from El Pollo that we brought to see them. He is going strong at 78 years old now and he looks like he will make it to 100 (his mother made it to 101).
All in all, it was a very productive day. I can hardly wait for the Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Gardens Plant Sale next month.
By the way, Sherry, the pond was beautiful. We will definitely keep them in mind for a picnic.
Thanks,
Chuck
The RSABG plant list has been posted - it contains both native and non-native plants and is a pdf file 40+ pages long. You need to register at the site to view it, and will be notified of any updates. Have fun!
Well, they do have 12 salvias that I'd get, but when they only have 10 1 gallons of each and if I don't pay the $60 membership to get in early, I figure the chances are good that I might not get any of them and it would have been a traffic- filled- freeway- wasted- trip. There, I done good.....talked myself out of it. A few of these may be available at Las Pilitas anyway. Instead, I'll be good and stay home and get what I already DO have in the ground that day...lol....
I've seen it before, can't remmber it's name...now that's going to drive me nuts. Someone come up with the name..quick! As a matter of fact, I have some of that in my living room, stuck in a gourd......
Dollars to doughnuts that ecrane3 knows the answer!
