Fall California Native and Rare Plant Sales

Perris, CA(Zone 9a)

I did a little research on this and I found a couple of Plant Sales that looked interesting. If anyone knows of any more, please be sure to tell me about it. I am going to these three shows probably.

The first one is the Theodore Payne Native Plant Foundation at 10459 Tuxford St., Sun Valley CA They have a preview of the sale for members and others who are interested on October 5-6 from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. The sale itself is from October 12-13 from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Members receive a discount on the plants purchased; however, anyone can attend to purchase. Their phone number is (818)768-1802 (check with them on admission, it varies). They also offer classes during the year.

The second Plant Sale is at Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens on October 13-14 (an overlap with the first sale). They are open from 10 am-4 pm at 1151 Oxford Rd, San Marino, CA 91108. Their phone number is (626)405-2199. There is a suggested donation of $15 per adult. Call for info about Senior Discounts.

The third Plant Sale is the Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Gardens at 1500 N. College Av, Claremont CA 91711. Their phone number is 909-625-8767. Their plant sale is on November 3 and 4 from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. You can contact their website for directions. There is a suggested donation of $4 per adult. This is also a good one to keep in touch with as they have very good classes throughout the year.

I am going to try to attend these three sales as I said. If anyone finds any discrepancies in these events as listed please let me know. I am not used to posting events like this and as long as it helps one person find a plant that they can use in their home gardens, I will think that it was successful. Also, if any one knows of any other sales in the So California area, please let me know. I've been to a botanical garden in Balboa Park in San Diego about ten years ago; I didn't check with them. Also, I checked with LA Arboretum and was told that they do not have a Fall Native Plant Show.

Thanks,

Chuck

Thanks for the info, Chuck. I might like to hit the Rancho Santa Ana sale. Now you've got me thinking I may need to check around and see if there are others...like maybe the Fullerton Arboretum....hmmmmm.

I haven't been to Rancho Santa Ana BG yet - this sound like a good time to go. Thanks, Chuck.

Thanks for the info, Chuck.

The prices are very reasonable and the plants are "locally appropriate."

You are very welcome, Chuck!

Here is a link to the Tree of Life Nursery on Ortega Highway in San Juan Capo, too. They are having a big Fall opening and plant sale on Saturday, October 6th to benefit the Orange County chapter of the CNPS. Very friendly and helpful staff, beautiful location, interesting display gardens and a very nice gift/book store, too.

Dear go native,

That is pretty close to where I live (the Tree of Life Nursery). I am going to try to catch that one. Last year there was a plant sale in the mountains on Clinton Keith Road by Murrieta Hot Springs. I don't remember the name of the group that gave the plant sale but I purchased three California Buckwheats from them. They had an excellent selection of California Natives. All I remember about the site of the sale is it was Osa (or something similar).

Thanks for the info about the Tree of Life Nursery, go native.

Chuck, TOL sales are to benefit local CNPS chapters (you probably noticed this on their web site, but for others who don't know). There will usually be one for Orange County and one for San Diego County, in case you miss the first (they also have sales in the Spring). They do sell a few non-native plants that are suitable for low-water gardens. Usually, the chapter will post a plant list shortly before the sale. The good thing is they have lots of knowledgeable people around to chat with about specific plants, and lots of mature plants growing there. Check out the Vitus californica "Roger's Red" growing over the center structure - what a beaut!

Perhaps I'll see you there!

A favorite of mine when I lived in southern California was Quail Gardens. Don't know a current schedule for special sales, but plants are sold in connection with the gift shop. Fascinating place.

K....does TOL sell Roger's Red? That's one I've been meaning to pick up for several years now.
Sherry

Yes. Las Pilitas had some the last time I was there, too.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

K, I just saw this post after d-mailing you....If Las Pilitas has 'Roger's Red', I can get one there, no need for you to get one at TOL for me.

Fullerton Arboretum has their California Native / Fall Sale October 13-14. "Hundreds of drought tolerant and Ca native plants will be on sale."

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Ooops, Sherry, just caught up with our Roger conversation. Give LP a call and let me know if they don't have one for you.

Fullerton Arboretum is the same weekend as San Diego CNPS! No fair, can't do both. Is their selection good? How about prices? I've got the plant list for SD-CNPS and I'm going over it. I guess should probably stick with SD because I want natives. Decisions, decisions. An embarrassment of riches this month!

Kathleen

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

I've only gone to the Fullerton Arboretum once...for salvias. The prices then on their salvias were mid-range, not the highest, not the lowest...$6.75 per gallon size, though I did get a good deal on Mexican Weeping Bamboo. I'd go again if I were closer or had another reason to be up that way.

Perris, CA(Zone 9a)

Sherry,

I am tempted to go to all three plant sales the weekend of Oct 13-14. However my pocketbook says I had better just pick one. I think I will go to Fullerton Arboretum as I have never been there before. I also want to check out their educational program...the class on landscaping sounds really great!!!

Thanks for sharing,

Chuck

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Chuck, I think you'll really enjoy the Fullerton Arboretum...we did. Lovely grounds to wander. When we get up that way we like to hit the antique stores in Orange also. Of course that doesn't do the pocketbook a lot of good either!

Perris, CA(Zone 9a)

You know, here in our area, we are really blessed with lots and lots of plant sales...LOL. I have to read the whole thread everyday just to keep everything straight in my mind.

Thanks to everybody who contributed plant sale info!!

Have a good day!

Chuck

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Chuck, I put them all on my calendar just to keep them straight in my head - I'm very visually oriented!

Tomorrow I'll be going to Tree of Life.

Kathleen

Perris, CA(Zone 9a)

Kathleen,

How was Tree of Life Nursery's Fall Opening native plant sale today? Was it beneficial to you? Would you recommend it? Was it a one time thing or will they have it annually? I was unable to go this year but if they have another plant sale in Spring or Fall 2008, I would really like to go!!

Thanks,

Chuck

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Yes, K, tell us what you got!

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Yes, it was great. Very busy - they were pleased at the huge turnout. Yes, they do have another sale in the Spring. It's great to go to both, as there are different plants available and also the plants growing on site change.

What did I get? Let's see,

Prunus ilicifolia lyonii (Catalina Cherry);
a white and a gold flowered Toyon;
Mimulus cardinalis (red monkeyflower);
Salvia 'Allen Chickering';
Fremontedendron (flannel bush);
red yarrow;
blue-eyed grass;
Ceanothus ground cover;
Dendromecon rigida (bush poppy)
Chilopsis linearis (desert willow tree)

I think that's everything. We'll be busy planting for a while!

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Oooooh..you did good!

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Hope so, Sherry. We're trying to work on a small bit at a time, putting in some big plants then smaller ones to fill in. We just aren't geared to "design" a landscape. lol I am trying to buy multiples now, though, so it doesn't look too "spotty."

DH is going to take some vacation soon and start construction on a type of "veranda" he has in his head for the front and side of the house. Then we can do some finishing off around the drive with dg paths, mulch, etc.

Oh, they also had some lovely S. apiana, which does very good for us, so I picked up another of those, too.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Yes, it's hard when you want one of these, and one of these and one of those to make yourself just buy 5 of 'those'. I buy one and then propagate to get the rest I need to fill in...it just takes longer. And this is the most 'undesigned' place you'll ever see, things just keep evolving haphazardly..

Perris, CA(Zone 9a)

Dear Kathleen,

You did very well for yourself. That is what I get for not being able to make the sale. Just out of curiosity, did they have any monardella from So California?

Sounds like you will be busy in the near future (transplanting all those plants...LOL).

Thanks for sharing,

Chuck

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Chuck, yes they had several monardella - I was looking at them but decided I needed something else more. We're having a sudden heat wave, so our outside working hours will be limited, but we've done pretty good so far today.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Oh my gosh! Good news / bad news. I really didn't care to hit the RSABG plant sale...I REALLY don't need to go to another plant sale! I just stumbled innocently onto the list of what they offered at last year's sale and it's just FULL of salvia. The good news is that the sale hasn't happened yet, so I haven't missed it. The bad news is that the sale hasn't happened yet, so I haven't missed it! DH hasn't yet gotten over being dragged up to the Cabrillo sale.

Well, just be good until next month. DH has agreed to go with me to RSABG because we both need to see the gardens.

Could you believe the heat today? It was like an oven over here - I had to water some plants twice. Got some things planted, but will wait until it cools a bit for the rest. We've put a fence around the erigeron/sisyrichium/achillea to protect from Mr Bun-Bun - he'll have to settle for the sticker-filled weeds, which he seems to like munching on, judging by the "evidence." lol Too bad we can't clone him and tinker with the DNA to encourage a diet of all weeds! I do like watching his little white tail disappearing around the corner.

Had a great blue heron come to investigate our pond today. Our birds set up such a ruckus he took off before we could get a photo. He was huge!

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Yes...sick of the heat again, but at least I didn't feel guilty about not being home today. It was hot up and down the coast also. Went to Roger's and was good...bought no plants...bought a hat instead. I'm always on the lookout for an 'exceptional' hat. Supposed to be hot again tomorrow...I guess no digging and transplanting. At least by November I'm sure, really sure it will have cooled off for the RSABG sale.

Perris, CA(Zone 9a)

Sherry,

I plead guilty. I just wanted to know what was available in plant sales. I am only going to three of the sales myself. My wife has told me that she wants to help me choose plants for butterfly larva and nectar. She is a saint...LOL.

Already today, I went to Parkview Nursery and looked around. They had some interesting things but I expect the three annual plant sales to be very good. Then while my wife was getting something for the blinds in the family room, I just happened to go over to the garden department at Home Depot and purchased the mulch for the plants this winter.

Dear Kathleen,

While I was typing this message, I was told that you had made your most recent post. I think it is terrific to have a blue heron in your pond. Good for YOU!!

I apologize again,

Thanks,

Chuck

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Guilty, guilty, guilty..what can I say, Chuck. When I finally tell the DH when and where we're going, I'm going to blame it on you. I think I'll spring it on him maybe the 'morning of', so that he won't have time to think of making other plans.
Sherry

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Sherry and Chuck, did you know the plant list for RSABG will be posted two weeks before the sale? I have an alarm set on my calendar program so I remember to look at the web site!

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Maybe it's better not to know what they're going to have. When I looked at the list from last year they showed how many of whatever they're going to have offered and you really hate it when the one you especially want says that they have 'ONE'......and you're wondering how long it will take you to find it,can you be the first one through the door, how many people must I trample to get to it?! I didn't care for that frenzied feeling at the Cabrillo sale. I think I'll not look at their list and just be happy to find whatever I do find without searching for the ones I just gotta have. At least that's the plan for now............

When did you say they'd publish the list?

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

ROFL

Perris, CA(Zone 9a)

Thanks, Kathleen!!

I didn't know that they published what they were selling ahead of time. That is good to know.

Thanks again,

Chuck

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

All I can say is I hope you guys are moving fast when I come running through.
