AZ Grown Plumerias II

Cave Creek, AZ

Davie,
Wow what a great blooming season you have had! What are you feeding yours? Are you misting them? I didn't get anywere near the blooms you got.

Clare sounds like your low temperatures don't get as low or stay as low for as long as they do here. If that makes any sense? It sounds like I still may need heat, but only on the very coldest of nights.
I water my plumerias in the ground the same all year last year and, no matter what, they still lose their leaves. So I do not think that the water has as much to do with it, as the low temperatures and short days.
I really think I am going to invest in one of those houses, thanks again for the info. Here is what I am borrowing for the time being. Supposed to freeze here this weekend. Putting my really important ones inside this monster until I can get the pop up!

Mickey, Thanks, I have had a really good fall bloom. Some are still blooming. I have a few that are just producing inflos.
Mostly I use water soluble, even numbered fertilizers such as Miracle Grow's 20-20-20 with micro nutrients. Recently I have started to use bone meal in rotation with the triple 20, but can't say if this is why I have had such a good fall bloom. I only fertilize once a month or so, basically when I have time. I mist, but not on a regular basis. What I make sure of is that they are never thirsty! I think this is the most important.

If you wondering, greenhouse is owned by the company I work for, not mine.

Tucson, AZ

Yuma, AZ

Ya...sure your not! It's a small pop up green house Clare recommended and posted pictures of above. Here's the web address: www.comforthouse.com.

Tucson, AZ

very nice!

Tucson, AZ

that was from last november. i only have about three plumeria in there this winter. the rest will stay outside! looks like the gh is about five degrees warmer at night than out in the yard.

Here's a direct link to the springhouse: http://www.comforthouse.com/flowerhouse1.html

That's great, Davie. You are very welcome. It is actually bigger than it looks. Let me know if you have any questions regarding assembling it, but it is pretty straight-forward. It pops up, but then you have to put in the supports along the sides and the top. Just make sure that they fit well together if you find that a support is too long and won't fit. You'll see what I mean, I'm sure. You should also line the bottom with rocks or bricks to get a good seal and to keep in place in case of wind. If you have any questions, you should email me as I'm not checking Dave's regularly anymore. I can dmail you my email address. Your employer's greenhouse is awesome.

Yuma, AZ

I am only going to use it for my newly rooted plants and some very special plants that I got from Thailand. The rest will stay outside.
Thanks for the info of inside compared to outside temps.

Tucson, AZ

watch out for spider mites and white flies. nasty if they get out of control!

Yuma, AZ

Thanks for the heads up! Had a hell of a time with white fly all season, finally used Admire, havn't had a problem since.

Tucson, AZ

i am using a horticultural oil. it's 96% canola oil.

Huge tree my friend found last weekend in Yuma. I estimate it is between 12-15' tall and 10-12' canopy. Medium size, white flower, with yellow center.

looks like a singapore. phoenix has some tall one like that.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Yeah, a Singapore for sure. Awesome:-)

My first inflos ever, form any of my two year old seedlings, are starting to push out! They are Daisy Wilcox Seedlings. This is the first of the two. Not sure if this is actually going to bloom or just being produced to induce branching? Feel like a little kid waiting for Christmas day.

Here is the other Daisy Wilcox seedling, I think that this one is actually going to flower.

i think the first will flower, too. are they in the ground?

Quoting:
I think that this one is actually going to flower.

when you said that, did you mean that you didn't think the other one would flower even though it has an inflo?

That's correct DHS. Some seedlings produce "fake inflos" (TRUE SCIENTIFIC TERM look it up) the first time around, and just branch not flower. I think the first one does not look like an actual inflo, and I think the second one does. Open for opinions.
Davie

Tucson, AZ

davie - that first one does have some individual buds. yea!

Yuma, AZ

Dete,
Thanks for your enthusiasm, I hope your right! They are in the right environment to flower. Keeping them in my employers greenhouse, does not fall below 60 degrees.

oh... that is kinda like what happens with oleanders. they make an inflo or a fake one that never blooms and falls off. have you noticed how similar oleander seems to be to plumerias? its like they are a hardy version of plumerias... that is just my opinion

Tucson, AZ

man, i have to take a drive out to yuma this winter!

Tucson, AZ

diehrd - they are actually in the same family.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

howcome y'all don't have y'alls zones under y'alls names (don't laugh about all the y'alls... i can't help it. that is just how i talk! lol!)

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

oh... ok that makes sense now... i had been thinking that and keeping it to myself for a while!

Tucson, AZ

haha! don't shy away from speaking up.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

well, it usually turns out that when i do say something like that, there is some obvious difference that i missed, which makes them at opposite ends of the plant spectrum if you will! i do things like that in class all the time... blonde usually applies to ditsy light haired girls, which i am neither, but in this case, i'm sure i'm the exception... my mom and sister are like that too.... but my mom ist the only (former) true blonde... ok random, but i just had to explain myself!

Tucson, AZ

LOL

Yuma, AZ

Good call on the Oleanders.
Dete- Your welcome in Yuma anytime. only have a few plumerias in my employer's GH, won't have much room for them pretty soon. All my lettuce selections will be filling them up very.

You just have to love a guy that pays attention to grammar and punctuation and who loves flowers too;-) I'm smitten:-) LOL! Davie, those are both viable inflo's. Nubs, or fake inflo's, look barren and more like a stub. I noticed this summer that even stubs can push out a side stem which contains buds.

As long as it stays warm enough, and it sounds like it will, you will have blooms. 'Daisy Wilcox' should prove to be an awesome parent. The redness on the peduncle and pedicel is probably a good indication that it will be a pink, a rainbow, or a red. The flower may be lighter in color than it normally would be because of the season and because of its lack of energy so don't be discouraged if the colors are muted this time of year. They may continue to bloom into the spring and summer so you may see a change in brightness. The second one looks like it will be a nice big inflo. Seedlings are so much fun if you have the patience:-)

Tucson, AZ

maybe, mickey and i along with some of the other valley plumeria enthusiasts can take a day trip.

Yuma, AZ

Clare, Blushing! I like manly things too! LOL. I only corrected it because it was so so bad. Good to hear I am going to have my first kids, and they are going to be healthy.
Dete,
Sure bring everyone out when all the leaves are starting to go. Y'all, as DHS would say, are welcome anytime.

lol

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

LOL, Davie. I'm sure you do! I didn't mean to imply that you didn't;-) LOL! I'm just a grammar and punctuation queen for my job so it is delightful to me when someone pays attention in that area. You know, that second inflo looks almost burgundy on the outside. I'm am guessing that it will probably be a red flower.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

clare, what do you do?
