I like it even if it is so tiny. I wonder what size flower grandifolia makes
in Peru?

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

Boy, I had an identical plant come up as a weed (my choice of words), I let it have control until it bloomed those tiny little blooms, it got tossed.

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

I guess grandifolia refers to the leaves which much be big? I am really appreciating the smaller flowers this year. I'm glad others grew different seeds from Ron than I did, that way I get to see more varieties before I grow them.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

The grandifolia I grew for Ron was just as tiny. The flower sure reminds me of cordatotriloba.

The colors look very similiar to the Jalostitlan Pink from So Africa I grew
yrs ago. I haven't grown it since because flowers were so small but I think a little
larger than grandifolia. Last yr Beth and I were unable to get sds to
germinate. I didn't realize yrs ago that it was probably a species. So far, I
haven't had good luck with old species seeds.

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

Not only did I have trouble getting those seeds to germinate, I never could find a photo on the internet of what the bloom was supposed to look like!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Beth, Jalostitlan pink just a made-up name by the villagers in So Africa I'm
sure. I do recall that it was a small light pink with an almost purply red throat.
The lvs were normal size and it gave me a lot of blooms open at one time.
It was a nice display. I'm so sorry now that I didn't start fresh vines every few yrs
which would have given us fresh sds. I'm going to try one more thing when
I return my plants to the g house. Going to plant a few in a pot that is
overgrown and that is already pot bound. When I water those the water just runs right thru and no chance of rotting the sds. It will be alternating damp and dry.
Can't hurt to try.

Best of luck to you. My seeds are still in the pot and I'll wait until next Spring/Summer to give up on them, but I don't think they are going to sprout.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Thanks Beth, I will let everyone know if I'm successful.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

I've had some of Ron seeds take almost a year to germinate.

Gourd - Thanks for the documentation...the I.grandifolia is important in the developement of Ipomoea batatas and although the ID details are buried in my journals somewhere...I'll be comparing the plant to others in the batatas series...

There is also the possibility that this might not be I.grandifolia because most of the species in the batatas series are structurally very similar...

I'll update as I can with any ID's and/or duplications...

The Jalostitlan Pink is an Ipomoea purpurea from the Jalostitlan area of Mexico and was offered by JLHudson some years ago...it looks exactly like a 'Crimson Rambler "type but usually grows longer and faster...a characteristic that many find desireable...

TTY,...

Ron

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Ron, I'm pretty sure my plant did not resemble Crimson Rambler. I did
buy it from Hudson's Sds and the description said from So Africa.
Of course this yr I ordered species China, a fuzzy annual with palmate lvs and purple flowers. What I actually received was id'd by Arlan as wild Ip
nil. So even Mr Hudson makes mistakes. If I received something other than
Jalostitlan Pink, I have no idea what the correct id should be.

Patootie-jackie - I don't know what you got,but I do know what I got...and the Jalostitlan was part of the Zapotec collection...
I've traded with other old time MG collectors and everybody I traded with had the same dark Ipomoea purpurea seeds that produced the reddish-pink blooms...

Do a google on the word jalostitlan...every single result is related to the Oaxaca area of Mexico and/or to spanish...nothing related to anything spanish in South Africa...

We can only share from our individual experience...

The Ipomoea palmate leaves from JLHudson that I have seen and received has been Ipomoea hederacea...

There is no Mr.Hudson connected with the JLHudson.Seedman company...
The company was formed by Harry E.Saier in 1911 and was last managed by Harry himself until 1971 at which point the company passed to other owners...The current ownership and proprietorship consists of Mr.D.Theodoropoulos and Ms.Caulkins...and although I much apprecciate the fact that JLHudson,Seedsman does their part in making available some unusual varieties of seeds I've found that their delay in using the rapidly updated resources of the web has caused them to use some very, very outdated terminology when referencing Convolvulaceae taxa...

The seeds are great...the botanical identifications are likely to be very outdated in some instances...

The good service they do greatly outweighs any lag in updated botanical names...

TTY,...

Ron

P.S. - I was just looking at the b&w photocopy of the last Morning Glory related entries in the last private catalog put out by Harry E.Saier in 1970...a b&w photocopy of the Park 1972 MG section was nearby...

Someone should remind me at some point to post the names and descriptions...

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Ron, I probably have this one mixed up with
cordatotriloba. I grew it yrs ago too, but not recently.
I know there is not a Mr Hudson associated with this company but had
never seen the current owners name in the catalog, just Ms Calkins.
I emailed them asking for a description for this item out of the old
catalog, mid 90s. I love the seeds they offer and have been buying
from them for over 15 yrs.

well, I've tried to upload some photos but they disappeared... here is try number 3...

comparison photos of cordatotriloba and grandifolia (the larger flower is cordatotriloba in each photo)

#3 this is the third try for number 3 (where did the other two go??)

The flower colors look identical to me

Mesilla Park, NM

#4 here you can see some subtle differences, the peduncle is longer on corditotriloba which is in the center photo of this picture. The leaves are bigger also. And on corditotriloba, there are several single blooms, on grandifolia, I haven't noticed any single flowers, only in cluster forms.

#5 seems like it is uploading a little faster now. There are most probably alot more differences and only Ron can spot them.

#6 Leaf comparison, I didn't want to cut off one of the flowers on grandifolia (for seed production). The left-hand side is corditotriloba

A - Your documentation and photos are wonderful! You are really on the ball! I don't know how in the world you keep up with all the vines you are growing! You are my HERO!!! I am aspiring to be just like you when I grow up or retire! LOL!

Seriously though ..... you are so thorough with everything. I am in awe!!! Keep em coming as I am learning so much from what you are posting here on DG!!!

Mesilla Park, NM

Thanks Becky, I'm learning as I go also.. I finally realized that the photos document everything for the future. Sometimes I forget that.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

An up-date on the Jalostotitlan Pink: I received an email from Ms. Calkins
at Hudson Seeds. She told me that this seed came from Mexico as Ron stated.
She also verified that the blooms are pink and white. So Ron was right
and I was completely wrong. Such a shame that my rememberer is broken
since it's irreplaceable. lol Sad but true

Jackie

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

Jackie,
I think that my rememberer is broken, too!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Oh no Beth, you too? lol

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

It's not broken .. most likely not used enough. Play games people, play games every day, spatial games like Tri-Jinx, strategy games like freecell, word games like hangman, or scrabble, multi-player games like backgammon or cards. Learn something new, alien and complicated at least once a month and master it. Get in over your head even if you are drowning. Use your brain in ways you haven't before.

Most people stop laying down new tracks in their brains by 30 or 40 and coast .. bad idea.

X, I know you're right. Even gardening, whether just m glory's or whatever is
not a brain stimulator. I need to be drinking sage tea, available in pkts from the health food stores. Supposedly the reason the Chinese aren't
plagued with Alzheimers. They drink it often. Seems like I recall, lol, that
Mr Hudson had a quote in his catalog that Sage brightens the mind and
refreshes the memory.

I still take college courses so that keeps me going, but I forget the stupidest things like where I put my keys.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Beth, I have to keep them in the same place without fail or I would be
constantly looking for mine. lol I manage not to lose my car in the parking lot at Wally World by parking on the same row every time. lol
