I think the point in cutting them off after blooming is so they won't try to set seed and thus, the energy all goes back into the bulb..

I always cut off the spent blooms. Some varities of Orientals do better for me than others. I've killed Tom Pouce 3 times now, but Stargazers & Casa Blanca keep going.
