Fall bulb sales when?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Last year, I think B&B didn't go to 50% off until the Saturday or Sunday after Thanksgiving, right?

So, make those lists... and order any absolute must-haves... then play the waiting game. Hopefully they'll come through with their usual 50% off sale! :-)

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Oh, I see! Thanks for the tip critter!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Oh drats, If they drop the prices to 50%, I might just have to go back for just a few that I axed from my 25 % off list. Patti

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Oh, dear, we have to wait until December 1 for the 50% off?? May not be able to dig into the soil by then--it's pretty cold out now...

Yes, 25% doesn't meet my 'degree of cheapness', either!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

No, no... not Dec. 1... to the best of my recollection, the B&B half off sale starts very soon, either midnight tonight or midnight tomorrow night (Sunday after Thanksgiving)... anybody remember which day for sure? :-)

Southeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Still 25% off today.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Oof. I'm about to fall asleep right on top of my keyboard, but I'm trying to stay up just a l i t t l e bit longer so I can see if B&B posts a sale tonight... I think I'm delusional... they probably won't lower their prices any further at all this year! LOL

But just in case, I'm standing by with a list...

And in case they don't, while I'm waiting for the clock to chime the hour, maybe I'll cruise the internet and see who might have a sale going on now that involves amaryllis (still full price at B&B this hour)...

I'm probably certifiable. At least I'm not looking for more bulbs to plant in the ground.

Adrian, MO(Zone 6a)

i think i planted mine too early. they're already starting to come up. i didn't even water them in. i thought that might delay them coming up too early, and the fact that i was too tired after planting to want to water. lol!

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL critter--so disappointed, too, that they are at 25% this morning. Hope you get to sleep in a little!

Some of my bulbs from past years are coming up, too. I think I'll put some chopped leaves on them to keep them safe and warm for a while yet...

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

I get several bulbs showing growth during winter or late fall, and rarely have seen any problem from it. But, if you're going to mulch over them, I'd wait till the ground is frozen to mulch. I made the mistake of mulching while the ground was too warm and it encouraged lots of stuff to sprout. I think that made the week-long April freeze so terrible for my lilies; they had started growing wayyyy too early.

critter, as we wait for that final markdown, I just envisioned you and me as Linus and Sally waiting in the pumpkin patch all night for the Great Pumpkin, LOL.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

ROFLOL at the pumpkin patch image!

They've got some good prices even at 25% off, but I'm just really far behind because for so long the ground just wasn't workabout due to the drought... and now I've been away for a week, not that I regret the visit, but this coming week is going to be really busy with planting!

If they put their amaryllis bulbs on sale, I plan to pounce. Otherwise, I'll probably continue to resisit (famous last words, I know), unless I start getting caught up... :-)

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I have some rain lily bulbs that I meant to put in the garage but they were left in the kitchen by mistake. They had gone dormant, but now have sprouted and are up an inch or so. Do you think if I put them in the dark garage, they'll go dormant again and be ok? Or do I need to let them grow and go through a whole cycle. (Apologies for being off-topic.)

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

My rain lilies have done that before too. I just go ahead and store them dry, and they perform fine the next year.

Southeast, NE(Zone 5a)

What are we waiting for now? December 1 for Brent & Becky? I'm afraid the ground will freeze. Will probably freeze the night after I place my order. We've had a lot of freezing temps, but the ground is still workable right now. Did we dream they had 50% off last year?

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

No dream, I have an invoice in hand from 11/27/06 of total order 307.00 with a discount of 153.50 from Brent and Becky. I still want a few things if the price break goes to 50% off.
It included Hippeastrum too. Patti

surfside beach, SC(Zone 8b)

I'm still waiting for Amaryllis.I haven't bought any this year but I have lots in the ground. They will bloom in Spring.

I have all of December to plant my hundreds of new bulbs.

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

You know, I think it was last year that I called them and asked for the date of the half off sale and they told me....maybe a call is in order?

(I'm still refraining from buying bulbs, or I would call myself...)

Southeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Call. Call. Call. Call. Call. Call. Call.

I would, but I'm at work. Working hard too, as you can tell.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Babe, you're just trying to start something, aren't you? It's going to start getting seriously colder next week (lows in the 20's, highs in the 30's), and it'll start getting literally hard to get bulbs into the ground around here. Zone envy. *sigh*

Tabasco, yes, a little "inside information" would be great! Puhleeeeze?

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

I checked Brent and becky's this morning. And it is still only showing 25 % off.

My ground is still workable, but I don't know for how much longer. It'll probably freeze hard until spring the day after I place my order. Sigh.

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

FRIDAY they go on Half Off.

OK I called and spoke to the woman in the bulb shop. I asked her when the Half-off sale starts and she said 'Well, right now they are 25% off." and I said, "yes, I saw that but I need a little more off' and she said "Well, Friday". And I said thank you and hung up.

So there you have it.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Thank you tabasco!!

Southeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Woo hoo! Tabasco, you are a doll! And a brave one at that! Thank you, thank you. Oh, shoot. The ground may freeze before they get here...

Willing the ground not to freeze. Shall I cover it with a blanket? ;-)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Hooray!! Oh golly, I really really really hope they will include amaryllis again in their final sale. And that there will be some left! McGlory, I'll save you a 'Red Lion', OK? ;-)

If you know where you want to plant, go ahead and dig or till... and cover it with a tarp. That'll help, just like "solarizing" the ground in spring by covering with black plastic to warm up the soil.

Next week, they're calling for lows in the 20's and highs in the 30's... I'd better hustle and get those daffs in this week. Last week was perfect planting weather, but I was in NC! (Of course, I did plant "just a few" bulbs while we were there.) Fortunately, most of the bulbs I bought this year are little bulbs (mostly crocus), and even a brief warm spell should let me shove those down into the surface of the soil.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

tabasco, you are my down fall. I know I will have to add just a few more on Friday. You know I will stay up late on Thurs to see if they post it at midnight.

I am waiting to rev up the drill when my DH gets home in an hour to hit the beds. I got a box yesterday from Van Engelen and I still have the 25% off box coming from Brent and Becky. It is in the 50's today so planting will be easy, plus my labels are all made. Patti

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

The vicious cycle continues. I got the last in the ground, looked around, envisioning what spring will look like, and focused on other areas. Then I realized how absent of color areas by stands of trees and the lawn in front of the barn would be. So, now I'm waiting for shipments from VanEngelen and B&B. I've never bought daffs by the 100 before, but have some great expanses that will look great massed. Also picked up some pink Spanish bluebells, chionodoxa, puschkinia, tommie crocus, frittilaria persica, and some more species tulips. Guess I got to get planting really out of my system before winter truly hits, lol.

The way things are going around this part of the country we will soon be tropical! We moved here from S.Florida partly because we wanted 4 seasons. The first year we were here 1999 it snowed.I had never seen snow on the beach before but we had at least 6 inches.Nothing since then.

I bought all of my Amaryllis for 50% off from B&B last year.Hope I can still get some some this year.Thank you tabasco.

I hope I can start planting this week. All I have been doing is watering and that has gotten old very quickly.

By the way;costco had very good prices on bulbs this year and I lucked out on a couple of bags at 50%off.

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Good gracious! You guys are really bulbaholics! I hope B & B doesn't change the half off sale date now and mess up your planting schedules and shopping lists! (I am in self-denial mode).

Tomorrow it's supposed to be in the mid 50s here so I'm going to plant my Van Engelen's that came yesterday.

Good idea about digging now and using the plastic. Brilliant, in fact. Especially since my son is home today with nothing to do!

Gem--it sounds like you are going to have a wonderland of bloom next spring!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Critterologist, Well I took your advice and pre-drilled an extra 100 holes, but then I just looked at what hasn't been planted and it comes to 484. But I don't expect a real frost yet here. So to date we have planted 4568 which includes some lily bulbs from Buggy crazy. I have ordered a mess more lilies from 4paws/bleek coop for the spring, so I just figured out today that I can just put in a marker of where it is safe to plant.

downscale_babe, I do hope to for some Amaryllis at half price from Brent and Becky. I got a great one last season on sale called Supreme Garden. That had soooooo many blooms that lasted for ever.

I need to take a look at what is still left on Brent and Becky. They were out of two narcissus that I want, but I rather suspect I can find something! Plus I just deposited some refund checks for plants not available on previous orders and coops. Patti

Patti, do you mean to say that flower came from ONE bulb?

Adrian, MO(Zone 6a)

why don't you all just ask them what the wholesale prices are? lol. make them an offer!
why wait?

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

oh, that is pretty--I'll have to go back and take a look at the amaryllis again!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

4paws, here is the comment I posted last April when it started to bloom.

Quoting:
I bought one for 9.00 on sale and got this big mass from Brent and Becky. I now have 12 blooms open at once ( one stalk is kind of short) and more coming. The Mother load.
It looks like I might get another big show this year too from it. Patti

Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Parks is having an amaryllis sale now. For some kinds buy one get one free; for others buy 2 get 1 free.

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

Fooey, I might not be able to resist an amaryllis from them, then. I'll be in line with all of you!

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Brent and Becky's half price sale has started. (she says while stepping out of the way of the stampede LOL) Amarylis aren't included.

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

thanks hart...just finished

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Hart -- did you get the 'Eye of the Tiger' you were sorta wanting?

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the heads up! Just got my order in!
