Fall bulb sales when?

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

if anyone is ordering from bleek would they split an order of tulipa tarda with me? you can order and i can pay half shipping and half the bulb cost but i can't pay until next wed. nov. 14.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

mamajack, you're going to LOVE t.tarda! They are so sweet and small, so easy to fit in, you may want to consider going with 100. I've only planted 50 here so far, and am wavering on weather to order more or not. Can never have too many species tulips, lol.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

it's just that my money is always so tight this time of year and i have wanted some of these for a long time and i figured i could afford just about half the cost of the bulbs with shipping. if you decide to order again consider me to either split half or even a quarter of them.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

I sure do understand. If I fall to temptation, I'll be sure to pick some up for you :)

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Claypa, Thanks so much for the heads up. I am just finishing up a big project( 40' endless stream) that needs (neeeeeeeeeeeeds) lots more bulbs. What a deal from Bleek.
Here is what I ordered. I would have ordered more but I have zillions yet to plant already from my other summer orders. But I had not ordered many for this new spot as I was now sure how it would come out. I will plant them all there except for the tulips which can't go there due to the deer and bunnies as it is not in the fenced area. Thanks again, Patti

mama, you are so funny. I ordered the tulips for you.
I've gone crazy now that I have a JOB - ordered 600 bulbs for a friend of mine in NY to plant. :-)
Ordered another 650 for me to plant from bleek.

Before he posted his classified (bleek, I looked for you first) I ordered another 400 from Blooming Bulb.

What a spring it will be (and a little legacy I'll leave behind when I move next June)!

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

i love you paws. do i need to mention that that is the kind of thing us younger kids are used to...being taken care of? HAAAhahaha

settle down girl. you know i'm just teasing you. that is the sweetest thing that you did. i will settle up on the 14th. now i am in debt to bert, tropicanna and now you. and oh, yeah, that lady on the lily auction.

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Nothing to write home about (15% off), but here's the Van Engelen sale.
http://www.vanengelen.com/pejtest/SALEHTML.HTM

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

:-)
I'm not worried. It'll come around eventually, mamajack, and I'm not feeding the baby sis thing...lol...I just laugh when you say that now.
Van Engelen tempted me a couple of months ago...but then the coop...and now the classified discount! oh my!

I will be in daffodil delight next spring.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

just want to say congratulations again on your new job. tickles me pink.

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

Thank you, mama! (I'm already imagining pots of bulbs blooming outside the classroom doors....

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I think somebody already mentioend that Van Engelen's 15% off sale had started... I just got an email from them noting that their "Narcissus Grand Mixture" was now 18% off their wholesale price, 100 for $39.57, less if you buy 1000 at a time of course.

Bleek may have some unlisted "deals" to offer you from eflowergardens if you contact him with specific things you're looking for... He just found some lovely big daff bulbs for my MIL at a very nice price.

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

Yes, he's very accommodating that way. :-)

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Hallson Gardens has some lilies on clearance, including some really pretty ones, and the prices look terrific, as well as some perennials. I haven't shopped here but their site says they're highly rated at the Garden Watchdog.

They have kiringeshoma for $1.99, some pulmonarias for $1.75.

Hart,
Thanks for the link!! I couldn't resist the lilies and the 'Cool Cotton' pulmonaria!
Bev

Shenandoah Valley, VA

You can never have too many lungworts. Or too many lilies. :>)

Garner, NC(Zone 7b)

You are so right about both, hart. I bought pulmonaria 'Samurai' from PDN this summer. Of course it was past blooming, but with leaves like that, who cared:-) It has been fabulous. And those lily pictures on the site made me drool...Just when I'd caught up on planting today!
Critter~believe me I thought about you and your major bulb purchases! I only planted about 75 really small bulbs-dwarf irises and species tulips. Never would have gotten through planting hundreds...oh, my aching back!
Bev

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

Critter...turns out bloomingbulbs was out of Whitewell Purple Crocus. Leah emailed and asked if Violet Queen was OK as a substitute and of course I agreed. There is some dispute over exactly what shade of purple this sieberi is:

David_Paul, Interesting article. I find that I can never tell the difference in so many plants that I see on line. Especially with DL and iris. I doubt I could tell the difference in person too. Some vendors boast of having the "real" or "exclusive" plant or bulb. I trust some of them as they are very reputable , but others seem like big joke and that the plant they are touting has just been given a new jazzed up name. But I do know that I have none of the three crocus mentioned in the article. I will look forward to hearing your critic if you end up at some point with all three. I think I will look for one of them on sale and pop in just a few. I am off to see what my Vt/NH garden centers have on sale as it is too wet to rake. Too Bad, Not! Patti

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Hi, all--

Did you all get the e-mail that Van Engelen's have marked their remaining bulbs to 40% off?

Lots of little blue bulbs left! And even some amaryllis! And some narcissus. http://www.vanengelen.com/pejtest/SALEHTML.HTM

Have to get ready for Brent & Becky's bulb sale--doesn't it start Thanksgiving night usually???

Gobble gobble...

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Tabasco, I can't wait for the B&B sale as I forgot about a couple tulips that I really neeeeeeed. No really. I have left places for them, so it is a must have. We are getting close to the 5000 (4742) mark so I guess I should just round things up. We have the 200 that I ordered today from Van E. thanks to your heads up coming next week and only 560 left for some random spots on the north side of the house that I will get planted by the weekend. I would have finished up today but it started to drizzle and I got chilly. Now I am sitting by the wood stove and feeling very happy about the spring explosion that DH and I have created. Can't wait. Patti

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

bbrookrd--can't wait to see the photos of your garden next spring! I alway love them! Wow! what a planting scheme you have!

I really cut back on my bulbs this year because of the big 'wipe out' I had with them last year--if the moles and voles didn't get them, the deer did, and then there was the April freeze out and the rot--so they (and I) were devestated....we are just putting in a few sale daffs (150), 80 muscari and that's it! I know I will regret my whimpy reaction come spring time!

I am of course going to check out the B & B sale, though. Although I doubt I'll catch up to your 5000!

I do so love your bulb bloom in the spring, bb. I wonder how you repel the critters!?

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Tabasco, we put a deer fence around a big chunk of the garden. But the rabbits still eat their way through it, so DH sprays with a variety commercial repellents that are mostly nasty smelling stuff and then he often adds hot peppers to juice it up. Having two border collies helps too, but the rabbits just wait until the dogs come in for the night before they go to work on the bulbs. Last year they wiped out some early bulbs until we started spraying and then later we forgot to spay a bed and they dinned on a bunch of new lilies. It is impossible to keep them out, but the spraying really helps.

I have had some moles and voles, but the dogs and a dose of organic repellent that is basically Castor oil seems to have moved them along. But it wasn't a huge number to get rid of. Fingers crossed. I didn't have the rot problem with the bulbs last spring, but a good deal of our land has great drainage, though we do have some veins of clay. We did loose a big red maple that I think was because of that weird spring cold spell. It fell down in the Noel storm, so we didn't have to pay to have it taken down. Sad loss as we planted it about 25 years ago. plus it was the shade for a hosta bed which I had to move. Always new trials, but I love the effort almost as much as the blooms. Patti

I have to agree with you on that Patti, I appreciate the effort myself. The project will never be done. I love playing in the dirt and seeing all those fat, happy worms. *sigh* almost heaven, worms surround me...in the black loam...of my garden..lol (opps, where did that come from...I'm hearing John Denver)

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

t, do you see a lot of grubs when you dig? I understand that's what draws the moles, and I just picked up a can of Milky Spore powder on sale at Lowes for $20 (reduced $10). It's a disease that kills grubs, and ultimately lowers the # of Japanese beetles.

Patti, I can't wait to see your pics! Your gardens should be in a magazine :)

Oh goodness, I don't know yet if I'm going to be up to ordering sale bulbs, or rather, getting them planted- ordering is the easy part. Only yesterday I got nearly caught up on getting bulbs planted. If I can get those few remaining bags in the ground today, I may get inspired, lol. Hmmm....its such a great time to pick up a few of those fun, expensive daffs B&B offers....my resistance is already wearing down!

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Sounds like you have a pretty good critter defense system set up. I think the border collies are key, and we don't have those....also attention to the repellant spray schedule which I am deficient on...oh, and the fence! I could make several improvements, I think!

somewhere, PA

LOL Neal! "I got nearly caught up on getting bulbs planted" and now you're ready to get more.
Repeat after me: I am a bulb-a-holic...

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

gem-- yes, I think I have the grubs since I haven't been using many chemicals (trying to go 'green')...

I may have to succumb to that, too!

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

I have used that Milky Spore stuff and gemini is right, it does work - though it takes a few weeks to take effect.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

I think Milky spore is considered an organic method of control, as it is a fungus that lives in soil. I've had it in my mind its considered a 'green' method, hope so anyway, because so far I haven't used any chemicals here. I've always been afraid to use anything else on the ground to protect the precious earthworms. Steve, good to hear a good report on MS.

Yep Tammy, the first step is admitting it, LOL. The good thing is, my addiction helps in keeping me from gaining weight at this time of year! And there's just sooo much grass here - that's just wrong, LOL.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Gemini_sage

Quoting:
And there's just sooo much grass here - that's just wrong

You have given me a new mantra ! Years ago we had a school at our house so the 15 kids needed a nice big yard to romp around in, but those days are long gone. So I think we have way too much grass for those grubs to hang out in and for the billions of bunnies to munch on while they are waiting to breach my deer fence during the wee hours. There are so many deer at times that I was thinking of putting up a traffic light, which would be the first one ever on Nantucket.

Have a wonderful holiday all. Today I will not plant bulbs, but clean and cook. Well, maybe a few. Yes, I am a bulb-a-holic Patti

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL it does indeed sound like we have some bulb-a-holics here! Who needs pumpkin pie when we can be planting bulbs!?

I will try to get a hold of that milk spore concoction. Sounds very useful! Thank you so much.

Enjoy a lovely thanksgiving everyone! And set your computer for an automatic midnight e-mail to B & B for your sale order!

By the way, gem, it sounds like your new garden will be ready to host the ORV RU next spring? Right?!! Thanks for offering!

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

I looked into Milky Spore this summer as I have a serious mole problem. So serious, most of the grubs are being eaten and the beetles are not a problem. Except from having to shore up some plants which were undermined by mole tunnels, the moles haven't been a problem. However, from what I read, it could only be a matter of time before voles move into the neighborhood and start eating up my veggies and ornamentals.

Due to the area involved (175 x 100) Milky Spore will be expensive. Because of that, I intend to use it at the most effective time. According to the instructions I've read, that would be late July and early August in my area. Spring is less effective. Also considering hitting the lawn with imidacloprid and limiting Milky Spore to the garden. The imidacloprid will knock out the grubs fast and then the Milky Spore, I hope, with perhaps some added applications become firmly established in the lawn the following year.

This is all theory however. Haven't done it yet. Can't say it works. So don't go by me until you research it and decide for yourself.

Mount Vernon, WA

At www.tulips.com, all bulbs are 25% off now. 50% off on 12/1/07!

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Ya know, I think I'll be ready to host a RU in spring. Still soooo much I want to do, but it is a great place for a group to gather. Would love to get the house painted and window boxes and shutters on first, but that will be a project for next summer. Thats ok, I'd be able to show before and after, lol. And it would be great to get suggestions from everybody about the progression. I'll be open to it if there is need for a space.

I did manage to get the rest of the bulbs in the ground today! Yipeeeeee!!! So, yes, I do see some holes to fill in, and am already perusing B&B, fingers poised on the keyboard for the sale to start, LOL.

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

oooo...plan it for when I'm cruising across country-when school is out! Hmmm...how to pack all the plants that far?

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Just fixing p-welch's link to take out the comma.

www.tulips.com

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I sent in an order to Brent and Becky just now, but the discount was only 25%, so I did some serious trimming. I also got a few from Tulips.com too. I guess I will be drilling more holes in Dec. I think I am done for 2007. I hope the show is a good one!

Now I wished I hadn't eaten so much tonight. I hope everyone had a wonderful T-day, Patti

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

I'm so bummed! 25% just is not that great a deal (to my caliber of cheapness, lol).

Southeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Doesn't Brent & Becky's usually go to 50% off? I spent a lot of time looking at what was left, then realized it was only 25% off.
