I just got booted out!

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

I was here just checking my watched threads, and all of a sudden, the system just logged me off! What happened??? It's done funky things before (like reverting to German instead of English for a split sec!), and I never complained, but thought I'd see what was up. Are you playing again, Dave? LOL

Hmm, I haven't touched the server since this morning... It sounds like you've got some strange things going on, though!

Marlton, NJ

We can get Daves in German???

Hey I could brush up on my long lost second language! :-)

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

LOL. I didn't know we could get this in German either. Also a long lost second laungage to me!! :~p

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

It's ok, it keeps things interesting, Dave. LOL Yep, I believe we're available in several languages!

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

LOL.

There's something going on. I was scrolling through the African Violet entries in PlantFiles and the whole page just disappeared and went blank. I'm using Firefox, and I think I remember getting a notice not too long ago about it being updated. Perhaps the update is unstable?

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

Ahhh, maybe that's it! Maybe Firefox is acting foxy...that's what I use, too!

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

It just happened again! I click on my next watched thread from my homepage, and BAM! "You are now logged out".... too weird.

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Odd. I use Firefox on my Mac and haven't had any problems out here in the West. Could it be a PC or geographical related thing ?

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

Ya just never know--my son's a computer geek, I'll ask him.

Greensboro, AL

I wonder if you can get Dave's in French?

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Some probably muttered a few words of French when these things occurred! LOL

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

ROFL!!!! "Pardon my French!"

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Here's a possibility -- it's a remote one, but it could happen. I just tried this, for the heck of it. A Firefox user who has enabled "find as you type" in preferences could possibly type a word beginning in "lo" and if s/he was not in a text box, the cursor would go right to the first instance of "lo"...for me it was the word Logout. Hitting enter at that point logs you out.

Good thing to know, but but it happened when I wasn't typing--all I did was click on the next thread in my threadwatcher. Computers are interesting creatures, aren't they? Here's some fun stuff to read about actual calls to tech support about computer problems:

I have had problems with the system logging me out too. Not when I click on a new thread, but if I have a browser window open for awhile and it is minimized. When I go back to it and click on "home" to refresh my homepage, most of the time it will log me out and I have to log back in to see what's new.

Hmm. How strange (and sounds most annoying).

If you are using Windows have you checked for spyware, adware, malware, that kind of thing? On Windows that's the 1st thing I do when I see any sign of strange behavior. 99% of the time that fixes my problems.

If you continue to have this problem, I would suggest starting a thread in the Computer Forum to see if the folks over there may be able to help.

Incidentally...
On my laptop at home I keep 1 (or more) browsers open to DG (and logged in) pretty much forever or until I have to reboot for some reason (which may be weeks). On that laptop I'm running XP with IE7. I click on my Home tab numerous times daily - sort of like pulling the arm on a slot machine, I think. Never have a problem.

At work I access DG more times per day than I'd like to admit but without staying on the page in between. There I'm using Firefox on both OsX and Linux and occasionally IE on XP, the latter two running as virtual machines on the Mac. Never had any problems with any of them. Also I have the Mac set to search for software updates, so I keep Firefox updated to the latest stable release.

We have our pc set up to run the spyware checker every night. I usually always have a DG window open too. I like your slot machine analogy. LOL It's just that sometimes when I pull the arm, I get kicked out. Maybe it's just DG telling me I've spent too much time here? LOL

We use IE7. I've tried Firefox and loved it, but it slows down my hard drive and I can't stand that.

I get rid of any spyware or adware with Adaware. I also have Norton anti-virus and firewall. I think maybe you're right--we're just being reminded that we have other things we should be doing! LOL

Charleston, SC(Zone 9a)

You might want to try another spyware program(as a test or backup). I used to use that one. Then tried a few others (after running Adaware and fixing everything reported) and found that it was not getting everything. I'm currently using SpyWare Doctor. There may well be better products but of the ones I tested it caught the most infestations. I've been using it for 4 yrs or so now with very good results - although it seems like a bit of a memory hog when it is running.

Neither an anti-virus program nor a firewall (although both are great tools) will protect against spyware and related software villains.

If DG were kicking people off as a reminder to get other things done...I should have been kicked off a long, long time ago. (Don't be getting any ideas, people.)

Have either of you done anything to annoy Dave lately? ;-)

Charleston, SC(Zone 9a)

Just to commiserate, I thought I'd share. After typing some of my (probably infamous) long winded posts and clicking "send", I was often frustrated to find that DG just "blew them away after a very long wait without either posting them or saving them. I used to think someone up there in the DG control room was trying to tell me something, perhaps about the need for brevity. Then one day I found that this only happened when I attached a h-u-g-e photo (like 23G). Oops, my bad.

Seriously, though, sure hope you guys find the solution to your problem soon - and that it's not contagious.

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

LOL I use Spybot Search and Destroy, too. My computer is really slow because not only do I have dial-up, but we're so far up the hill that we frequently have trouble with the phone lines--static, no service. I think the squirrels are flossing their teeth on the lines!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

scutler, we had the same problems with Adaware. We used Spy Sweeper and found a bunch of stuff that Adaware missed. I have been told though, that it is a good idea to use 2 or more different programs just to see if one is missing things that another one will catch.

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

Yep, my son the computer geek says the same thing, that they don't all catch everything, so it's good to use at least two.
