Jannich didn't get home until late last night. She really had a big ordeal and it will take her quite some time to get back on DG.
Here is what happened to her. She wasn't feeling well and thought she had a cold so she went to a family doctor there in her small town. He said he thought she was going into heart failure and needed to be in a hospital 100 miles away. Not wanting to bother anyone she drove that mileage straight to the emergency room where her cardiologist's partner was waiting for her. (She never ever again would she drive that far that sick............every again.........and then had to drive home last night)
What was actually wrong was that she had been cleaning her grow shelves with clorox and water.............that aggravated her asthma...............the asthma had turned into bronchitis ...........and a very serious infection was taking place in her lungs. They kept her all week in the hospital and she said she almost couldn't drive back home the 100 miles last night.
You know how weak people get when they have been so sick and lying in a hospital bed. She had to get more antibiotics this morning and she is wiped out....................I told her we wouldn't call and bother her but would welcome her back big time when she is ready for DG...............
The good news???????????? She only lost one plant while gone..........and she won 30.00 worth of plants to be ordered from Bingo...................she tried to be excited but i think she felt too horrible.
Just knew that I should post this as Plantladylin looked up all the hospitals yesterday.........and, yes, she was in the process of being released when we were calling the hospitals.......and we did have th right hospital Lin...........Also.........i know that Rain, Snow and everyone was dmailing and emailing me..................Jannich feels blessed that it was not her heart but she is still far from well...................
jannich update for AV friends
That's a relief to know that even though she is very ill and weak, she will get well. Thanks for sharing the news, Gail. Thanks to both you and Lin
Gail did all the work calling hospital after hospital trying to find her.
It's a shame Jan doesn't have any family there to help take care of her. I will put a card in the mail to her tomorrow!
She knows now that if she should get sick again...............she is calling an ambulance to drive her 100 miles when she is this sick..............
Jan... we here at DG wish you a speedy recovery! Hope to see you back here very soon!
Gail... thank s to you and Lin for keeping everyone updated.
Karen
Sure have been worried and praying for her ; ( Such a terrible ordeal to go through alone. Thanks for the update Gail and Lin. Hoping Jan is back to feeling well very soon!!
just got back, sorry to hear about Jannich ,she will be on our prayer list
Hi there!
Thanks so much for all your thoughts and prayers. It was a ruff week but with the meds its better. And the next time I need to go to go that far to the hospital they can call the Air fleight for me I won't be driving again.lol
See you all soon again,Jan
I got a surprise delivered yesterday afternoon from my son in Rhode Island I wanted to share with you all.Now if I can figure out how not to kill it I'll be OK with it.LOL.
You had us really scared for a while there! Glad to have you back :)
On my little bitty phone screen, that looks like a Dendrobium. If I'm right, good light, let dry between waterings. Don't worry if a few leaves turn yellow - they tend to do that after a trip.
I am so glad Keyring is around (LOL)..............I wouldn't have known in a million years what she is but she is gorgeous, Jannich.................what a sweet son.............moms like that, don't they!!!!!!!!!
WELCOME HOME JANNICH! We missed you here in the Garden!
What a Beautiful Orchid your Dear Son sent you! It looks like a Dendrobium to me too. Here's some info: http://www.sunbulb.com/dendrobs.htm.
There are 40 listed in Plant Files: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=dendrobium&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&search_prefs%5Bblank_cultivar%5D=&search_prefs%5Bsort_by%5D=rating&images_prefs=both&Search=Search

plantladylin,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,you are always so helpful......................i can never find pics i want in the plant files............don't know what I do wrong...................
Gail: I was told recently in Plant Files to instead of putting in the common name (because so many plants have the same common name) to put the name in the genus spot. If we don't know the genus name though we have to go by the common name! I just love researching stuff and google a lot .... of course whenever I google a plant name, I usually always get one as: Detailed Information on: (the name of the plant) and it of course is the DG Plant Files listing!
I don't understand what..........................you put the common name in the genus spot???????? that doesn't seem right..............no wonder i can't find plants...........I never know the genus of any plant..............
I just realized you said you google a lot.......may start trying that...................thanks
Oh no. If you know the genus name, put it in that spot - where it says genus. If you don't know the genus, you have to put a common name in the common name spot. Yeah, just google whatever name you know and see what hits you get! I guarantee 99.999% of the time you will get one for DG Plant Files!
Welcome back Jannich. You have been missed! How sweet of your son ! Take care of yourself and hope to see you around the garden more very soon : )
Gail,I have a terrible time iding plants.I feel so bad....just the other day I had to dmail Lin to help me with one..lol...just like that she knew what it was... just amazes me.I need to search forever and then I am usually wrong anyway...
plantladylin.....................let me know if you get the other package and if they are dead by now...........probably so.......................after traveling all over the US before being rerouted to you...........
Gail: I will let you know if it arrives today!
thanks and I am going to check my box in case I am the one who messed up with the address..................
I'm sure you got it right Gail. The 1st one had my exact address. I think it was just folks at the P.O. who do all the sorting. Maybe they had one for Dayton, Va and when the one for Daytona, Fl came by they were just thinking Dayton and threw it in that pile! I think the P.O. misroutes things more than we realize.
I have to agree with that Lin....just look at that rr we are in together....that poor box must be bouncing all over the country!
Yeah Cedar ... I've been wondering about that one! Can't even trust Priority shipping anymore though .... and what's the use of paying the extra 65 cents for Delivery Confirmation when if you use the drop box at the P.O. it never gets scanned, so it never shows up in their computer! You only know they got the package when the recipient notifies you that they received it! A postal employee told me thats why you should stand in line because if you give your Priority Pkg to a clerk they scan the confirmation # right then and the computer will have a record of it. When you use the automatic machine in the lobby of the P.O. and use a credit or debit card it asks you if you have a Confirmation slip attached to the package and they charge you the extra when you do but it's a waste of money if they aren't ever going to scan it for tracking!
I hear ya Lin,Thats why I always print my labels online at usps and use the scan confirmation. It automatically has it in the system then and when I get to the po all they do is scan my sheet.Works pretty slick and the other bonus of printing my labels online is delivery confirmation is free..lol..can't beat that..anyway..its never let me down..yet....Edited to add: but I'm sure it will someday.

Oh, I didn't know it was free if you did it on line. How do you weigh your package? Is a bathroom scale accurate enough? Or do they weigh it for you at the P.O.? I was trying to not have to stand in long lines at the P.O. - that's why I have been using the automatic machine in the lobby.
I have a regular large heavy food scale I use that weighs items up to 25 pounds..then I print off my label online..and when I take it to the po right before I have them scan it I just ask them to doublecheck my package weight.Usually it is right on but sometimes ....I have had to pay for a little more postage. Some people have said they just guess the weight and pay postage on what they think it is..lol..I am afraid to even try that for fear it would get returned to me for not enough postage..lol..
I have one of those digital food scales that I weigh my packages on and I just round up to the next even number of ounces and I haven't had a problem with one ever coming back. My husband has a small online business and I have shipped literally hundreds of packages this summer!! Plus my plant swaps and trades etc. And since my whole issue is not to stand in line..... I am now able to just walk around that whole big line and stack my packages on the side counter!! Love it!!
And for anyone who is interested (since it took me forever to find this out! LOL) if you want to send first class packages and print your own labels you can do it through Paypal Merchant Services! Delivery confirmation is automatically included and it is only a added cost of 18 cents! No more long long lines and delivery confirmation to boot, you can't go wrong!
~Brenda
Well how tacky was that, I dove in on the postage discussion but didn't say..............
I'm glad your home and on the mend jannich!! You have a great son to send you such a beautiful plant!
~Brenda
Excellent Brenda! I hadn't thought of paypal for 1st class packages. That will really save money as usually when I send leaves even tho the weight isn't even 10 ounces I have always went usps and used priority just so I could add free delivery confirmation.Think of all the extra money I will save to add to my new plants fund. Thanks so much for that great tip Brenda!!
Guess I need to go buy a food scale!
Yep, you can send packages up to and including 13 ounces for first class shipping costs and in only very rare instances does it not arrive in the same time frame as Priority! And then it is only a day or two later. It has saved us a ton and saved me hours of standing in line! LOL
I live in a small town and at first they would pull my packages aside and weigh them to double check me but after a short period of time they started just tossing them straight into the mail bags as they now know I'm weighing properly, that speeds up up delivery too as they'll go out on an early truck that way.
~Brenda
Snow does her own with click and ship....................they get here in a hurry............mine take forever and i stand in line at the post office.......................the biggest problem to me with click and ship is our heat............if I put up a mailbox, the carrier will pick them up here.........but that box may be sitting in his hot postal truck until he gets back to the post office...................is that how it works????????
Yes, that would be an issue for you Gail. We don't have home delivery or pick up so I must drive to the post office each day (it's only two miles away though) but it does ensure that I get my packages there in good shape! And then they sit in the big air conditioned or heated post office building until it's time for the big truck to pick them up and take them down to Boise.
I've only had one shipment of plants not make it to me in good shape and it was 13 degrees below zero the day they arrived here!! Not even that big truck could keep them warm enough on the trip up from Boise even though the box had insulation in it! The heat packs some of the eBay vendors use work very well though, I've never had a loss if they have included one of those, even on the coldest of days.
~Brenda
Welcome back Jannich. Nice to see your name in print.
Linda
hmmm .... 13 below Zero? I don't think if you wrapped me in insulation ten times and had me in hats, gloves, ten pair of socks and boots that I would make it in that kind of cold either. :)
i just got back from the post office..................she told me the best way to do it in our heat.......is to go to Office Depot, get a scale, bring it to her to calibrate............then i can click and ship online..............and drop them off at the post office..............sounds like a winner to me.....................
I think you will love it Gail!! It really does work soo slick doing it that way..and no long lines to wait in..
I have to confess that I have never waited in line at our post office ...................our town population is 3,000 and we have home delivery.............I just happened to use a post office box because I don't want my plants sitting on the truck...............for home delivery.......
You are so lucky to have home delivery....I am like Brenda...very small town.. about 800 people....no home delivery.. all need to go to the po to send and pick up our mail.
You can also order a postal scale right from the USPS website.
