Some downtime last night

At around 4:15am Central time (9:15am UTC) our internal switch went offline. This is the switch that allows all the DG servers to communicate with each other. Since they weren't able to communicate with each other, the site went offline.

This morning at around 8:00am Central time (1pm UTC) I switched networks so the servers could communicate again, and the sites came back up.

I'll need to replace the internal switch, but until then the sites will be just fine using the external network for communications. Thankfully this event happened late at night and most visitors were not affected.

thanks for the info. I was only able to access DG at about 9 a.m. We are all on tenterhooks about darius.

9am (eastern time) was right about the time I got it back online.

North Augusta, ON

Glad you're back. New puppy had me up at 5:30 am......I had a panic attack when i couldn't get into DG........I mean...what else is there to do at that hour of the morning??

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

try reading Anna Karenina, like I'm doing now. Egads, I'm not sure I will live long enough to complete it.

Marlton, NJ

Great novel that one. Two movies from it also very good! :-)

Try reading War and Peace, thats another long one but I made it through, lol.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

That's next on my list after The View from Pompey's Head. I work with an historic designation group and we are nominating a house for local landmark designation that Hamilton Basso occupied while he wrote 3 books. Pompey's Head was made into a movie. Another book, Courthouse Square was opted for a movie but was turned down because of the controversial civil rights tone. I am trying to find that one to see if it is about our town.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I tried early this morning too. Got a message that said something about Tex. I thought, "Poor Tex". I'm reading Janet Evonovich's book number 12 in the Stephanie Plum series, but I decided to go back to bed instead. :)

(Zone 1)

I too panicked when I tried logging on at 7:30 a.m. eastern time .... and again at 7:40 and again at 7:50 .... finally gave up and tried @ 9:00 and Yippeeeee! The Garden was open!

Olympia, WA

Whew - trying to figure out what to do when DG is down is like trying to figure out what to do when the well runs dry or the power goes out.

I am NEVER on the site at 4 AM Pacific Daylight time - until this AM - argggghhh!!!!!!!!

Welcome back!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I agree! Talk about withdrawal!!!!
I about sobbed to my DD when I couldn't find my friends.

Sorry you had to get up so early, Dave. I was already here working on my Blog when everyone went away. I'm so glad we're all back together now.

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

Dave, stuff happens in the world of electronics and we are grateful you are there to fix it. Do you ever sleep?

I don't think he does. He's kinda like Santa Claus.

Jasper Co., MO(Zone 6b)

Same as Dave said I has been trying to get in so it now kind very slowly to get in!

Give him more time to get it online....!

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

I too tried eary this morning, and my decision to go shopping was a right guess. When I returned, everything was back to normal. Just gave me a new perspective, I am internet addicted, speciall here!!

Happy Autumn the First!

Northern, NJ(Zone 6b)

I have lost DG for a few hours a day since the 22nd. Last night and this morning I could not access the site. Is it just me or was the site down?

Necedah, WI(Zone 4b)

site's been up for me since at least 4 am (unfortunately I was up too ;)

Northern, NJ(Zone 6b)

I definitely couldn't get on at 4 this morning for more then a few seconds and the site would freeze. When I rebooted I couldn't get back on. I tried different ways to get back in that worked the night before without any luck. I did get a chance to look at alot of native plant sites while I waited.

Necedah, WI(Zone 4b)

Ugh, that sounds frustrating!

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

I'm still having trouble getting on....Sometimes it loads the homepage fine but when I go to check out a thread it just thinks and thinks and never does get the thread loaded.

Let's give it another hour and see how it goes. By afternoon, I'm hoping that all is straightened out.

The long-term solution of replacing the failed equipment will occur next time I make the time to drive to Dallas...

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Dave:

Once again, thanks for all that you do for us.

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Yes Dave..Thank You! Its working great again :)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Someone mentioned that they are addicted to the internet.................that would never be my problem............I am just addicted to this site!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

Same here gessiegail!!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I joined last summer a year ago in August...................it took me 6 months before I ever found my way around as I know nothing about a computer and don't care................as long as i can get where I want to be.........................

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

... and we al want to be right here!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

most all of yesterday I could get to the home page but the links just didn't want to work....did a lot of things to my pc to clear it up....don't think it was me......better today.

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

Just wanted to say that I too have been having trouble getting pages to load for DG, other (non-DG) pages load very quickly so I am thinking it is this site. I also did a bunch of stuff to clear up my PC just in case, everything else is working fine but I am having a lot of trouble getting even the homepage to upload. I just get the timed out message a lot.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Still having trouble this morning with the links inside the homepage. Takes a couple of minutes and I am on broadband....not the usual.

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Dave's has been running slow for me also. I'm not getting any time outs. I've checked other sites and they seem to be doing fine.

I Defragged my machine, hoping that might help to improve the speed. (It had been a while since I did that task.) Even after doing the Defrag it still seems to be running slower than it's normal lightning speed. While I was doing the Defrag, I used the laptop and it was slower than molasses on DG on every page I tried to load.

I have faith that our hero, Dave will get this fixed soon. I sure appreciate all of his hard work to keep the site running smooth.

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

DG is very slow for me too, this morning. Seems to be running on dial up!

Moss Point, MS(Zone 8b)

Me too. Slow as a snail.

Edited to say the worst delays are in loading threads and sometimes photos.

Mine is slow to upload today also, and to open threads. Thanks for working on it.

HaHaHa....well, at least we know that when Dave's Garden has a problem, an awful lot of computer "housework" gets done! If another site is problematic, I just leave til later...but if it's DG, I'm on the phone to my guru, DH, SIL whoever I can reach to "come fix it!!!!"....defraggs, security updates, virus scans....all get done, at the very least when we have problems with DG.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10b)

Now it is running so fast that after I hit Home I don't even have time to notice if it loaded! LOL

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Shari.....how funny.....I have run 3 security programs, clean disk, defrag, etc.,etc.

The very last thing I would let be messed with is DG.

Dave must have come to Dallas today....or yesterday.

Thanks again and again, Dave.
