Any interest in a "Fall" av/gessie swap? Thought I would just throw this idea at you all and you can tell me what you think..LOL....We could do a plantlet/leaf trade with cuttings and rhizomes too? Plantlets, leaves, cuttings and rhizomes could be sent, any member of the gesneriad family. not just av's..whatever you have available. I figure we could have everyone interested sign up on this thread and dmail me your addy and a few of your wants and haves and when I have everyones lists I can match you up to hopefully get a few of your wants and some surprises too. Maybe we could leave it open until October 1st and then get everyone matched up and be ready to send our swap boxes by lets say the 1st or 2nd week of October.I think the weather should be safe for travel yet at that time? If anyone else would like to host that is fine with me too.I just thought I would offer. This isn't set in stone yet...lol..just checking to see how much if any interest..if any..there is!
Nancy
"Fall" av/gessie swap?
I would be interested Nancy! I'm going to have several streptocarpus babies big enough to go to new homes by then.... I think! Along with a couple of AV leaf pots and a few rooted episcia stolons too. Oh and some alsobia babies too....
So it sounds really fun to get to swap with them!
~Brenda
Great Brenda! I think too it would be a nice way to share extras we have with others.I know I myself have alot of duplicate plants from leaves this spring and so many plants I have received from others here in the garden from trades that are doing so well like episcias and streps..not to mention all the orders from robs and other venders I have received.. its time to share them or buy a bigger house..lol.. I thought it would be a great way to free up space and..of course..fill the empty space back up again..LOL

I WOOD LOVE TOO 2 I AM AT DADS BUT I WILL BE HOME LATTER YES FOR ME.THAT IS JUST GREAT BEFORE THE SNOW FALLS HERE
DIMMER(AKA) KIM
Wonderful Kim,This thread has been so quiet..I was beginning to think nobody liked me anymore : ( LOL...I'm hoping everyone is just busy right now.The swap went over so well we did this spring, and a litlte while back I read there was some interest in doing another one this fall so I thought I would get the ball rolling to see how many wanted to join in on the fun again before the cold and snows start.Well there are 3 so far : ))
Nancy
I have never participated in a swap before. How does it work? Fill me in on the details, please.
Hi Snow, I was thinking everyone who wanted to join could send me a dmail with a few things they would like to receive and a few things they have extras of and would like to share with someone.. I will match everyone up with another swapper to send to. We could send leaves, plantlets, cuttings and rhizomes from any member of the gessie family...what ever we had extra of and wanted to share..there would be no set amount anyone would need to send.I'm not the best at explaining things..lol..I hope that makes sense? Or if someone has any suggestions for the swap please let me know.
Nancy
U will love it. It is so easy I have been in the houseplant one the last couple of times and it is fun I am glad to C you have the part for the computer,
If I am right it is any thing from the AV and Gesneriads Family I think You can use Leaf, rooted cuting, stems?that a question still seeing if mine is growing (The Stem) LOLO. Put them in bag and Nancy will give you someones name to send to
Their may be more and I am a bad speller but someone else may be able to tell better then me
Dimmer
PS Hope this he[p a little
Just a thought.....Gessie seeds could be sent too.. I have some streps with seed pods on so they will be ready by then.I am the worlds worst at starting them from seeds.Never stops me from trying tho : ) One of these days I will succeed!!
Hope this happens again next Spring when maybe I will have something to swap! I'm gonna try my hand at propagating!
Oh Lin,I sure hope you can join us!! You don't need a ton of things in order to be in this or even have anything other than av leaves.I sure don't want to run anyone off.Even if a person just has av leaves to swap that would be wonderful.I for one would be tickled pink to receive a few of your leaves : )
If you tell me a place to buy a plant so I could take a leaf or two from then send I would love to be in this... Gail is helping me learn how to root.... I will go to our nursery this weekend and see if they have any....
Hugs,
Susan
Susan,That is really sweet of Gail. She is excellent at starting leaves! You mean to tell me with all the plants you have... you don't have any avs yet? Thats so sad..lol..you have dmail dear : ))
Nancy
See Susan .... Lots of "Enabler's" here! You will be addicted in no time!
Yours are still alive Lin...LOL That is saying allot from me...LOL Av's as a rule do not like me but I am trying...
Hugs,
Sue
Alright Susan! You go girl! I must admit, many years ago I would kill any green living plant within a short time. I found I was watering them to death! LOL. Now, most of them seem to thrive on neglect! If those I sent you to "practice" with don't survive, don't fret .... there's more where those came from!
Oh my gosh I can remember when I was 1st starting out...LOL..I killed far too many to even count..but it was all a learning experience..and I am STILL learning!!
I never had them on pebbles or with wicks, so I will see..LOL It seems the pebbles are always dry so I water a little each day. Not that the pots are sitting in wet water. :-)
This winter I also will play with passion flower seeds and Datura seeds.... I grew one Datura last year and she is beautiful... So much I want to learn and to short of time and brain space. :-)
Hugs,
Susan
Susan, you have 3 boxes coming today................start propagating what i sent you and some of the plants will be ready by the time of the swap..........example...........take small cuttings from all that variegated wandering jew...........such a pretty plant.........Snow sent me cuttings to begin with...............you will have lots to trade later in october.........you don't have to just start with leaves...................also your av and strep leaves will not be ready in october but your cuttings will be.........
Hi Nancy. I have lots of leaves I could send, but haven't had any success yet with propagating. Would it be okay if I joined the swap?
~Melissa
Sure Melissa leaves would be just great : )
Great. I'd love to participate! Sorry for taking so long to respond. Been away from the computer for a few days.
I'd like to join also if leaves are okay for the swap. Thanks, Lou
Here I am....Kim the lurker. *lol*
I don't have any AV's but I do have 1 Goldfish and 3 Lipstick plants that sure could use haircuts. Do these count?
After lurking for so long I think I may have figured out what I did wrong with AV's! I had one of those self watering pots right? I used to make sure the bottom pot was full of water all the time. Not just let them sit for 15 minutes and then dump the water out *lol*. OMG, I was rotting the things to death.
I don't really like AV's (ducking head so I don't get hit with a pot) but I DO love the looks of the alsobia, streptocarpus and episcias. In everyone's opinions, which are the easiest to grow that require the lesser of bright light? I ask because I grow alot of things that require bright sun so most of my bright sun spots are take up but I do have spots in my bright light areas :)
Don't laugh Susan but I have baggies of Datura seeds and Hardy Hibiscus seeds stuck to my windows right now. The Hardy Hibiscus has little rootlets after only 2 days *lol* I couldn't wait to start them and don't care if I'm growing them as houseplants this winter *lol* I just felt the NEED to start some seed *lol* The need for seed....goodness I must be tired *lol*
I may be interested....
Hi ya Kim! Welcome! Of course the Goldfish and Lipstick Plants count! Those are in the Gesneriad family and any Gessie is welcome in this swap!
You don't have to like AV's at all to participate in the AV forum, it's for all types of Gesneriads! Hope to see you around this part of the Garden more often!
Hey everyone .... I will vouch for Kim .... she's a great trader!
AWWW Lin, you always make me feel so welcome :)
You are such a sweetheart :)
Have you received your cuttings yet? If not, you should tomorrow :)
Kim..Lin explained it perfectly..Thanks Lin ..What would I do without you? : ) Don't worry Kim nobody will throw pots at you..LOL
Anybody else have a hard time getting on DG today?..It was so slowwww..I was having withdrawals..lol...working great now tho..
Welcome Brenda,Kim,Susan Melissa,Lou and Kim : ) Hope I didn't miss anyone...Va_Wild_Rose..hope you will join us.
Lin are you going to join us? How about you Gail..and you Snowrose?
How about the rest of you gessie lovers out there?Come join in the fun!!
You all still have a few days to decide..
Cedarnest,
Can we include a "surprise" that may not be in the gessie family? I grow alot of things, just not gessie's yet......YET
How is this going to work? Will 2 people swap with eachother? Do we send you a list of what we're sending or things we'd like? Each swap seems to be done differently. Is there a certain number of cuttings we need to take? Yep.....she's a lurker that's for sure *lol*
Well Kim....this is the 1st gessie swap I have organized so I am sorta flying by the seat of my pants here..lol.. so I am hoping people will chime in some suggestions as to the best way to go about it.?.I haven't exactly figured it out yet..lol.The way I originally planned it was to do it like I do the houseplant swap..Everyone sends me a list of a few things they would like to share that they have and few of their wants..after I received everyones lists I was going to try and match each person up to receive from someone that has at least one of their wants.I guess there isn't really a limit on the amount of leaves/cuttings/plantlets/etc anyone can send ..I think if someone wants to include a surprise that will be fine but I won't say everyone has to include one...it will be optional ok?Does that make any sense?
Anyone have any ideas they would like to add? I am open to any and all suggestions : )
Nancy
Hey Kim,
ME laugh at you??? No way man...I am not that found of AV's either and I have not gotten hit with the pan yet...LOL
I would love to know how your seeds do... I am going to start this weekend with passion flowers and also Datura's and I feel the same way...To bad if I have to have them as house plants for the winter... May take me that lone to grow the Passie's..LOLOL I am new to all of this.. Kim I have some plain white daturas that came out of one of my pods if you want any let me know... I also have pods growing off the purple on the outside and white on the inside and when they go POP if you want any of those you can also have ....
This is a very nice bunch of people...
Welcome here :-)
Susan
I am game, Nancy..........................all gesneriads count and many people prefer to grow anything but an av.....................nothing wrong with that........................
Since streps like the cooler temps of 55 to 75 degrees, i bet there will be a lot of streps growing on people window sills this winter....................
Great Gail.Glad you are joining us!
Susan, thank you so much for the offer but I have more seeds than I will ever be able to start this winter *lol*. I just started the Datura and the Hardy Hibiscus because they seem to take the longest here in Maine. Our season is so short that I'm finding alot of my annuals I have had to bring in in order to collect seeds. With that being said, it's been SO hot here lately. Last week I thought for sure we'd be getting a frost.
OK, so all you gessie experts, which out of these require the least amount of light/humidity to the highest amount of light/humidity alsobia, streptocarpus, kohleria and episcias? I will need to take some time and research all these so that I can learn how to grow them. It was so long ago that I tried growing an AV. I just figured they didn't like me. I've also had a lipstick plant for a good 5 years that has not bloomed once. I'm getting to the point with it that it's time for it to go. I think some varieties of plants are better bloomers than others as I had cuttings of a lipstick plant bloom for me this summer but the 5 year old plant didn't. I even put them outside for the first year this year. Will definitely do it again next year!
I think i would like to join the swap.i just finished a few, but it's so much fun.I have to go with gessies as i don't grow much else.
mrsbonnie
Welcome mrsbonnie,happy to have you!
Kim,I am no expert by any means so I sure hope someone comes along to give you the low down..I do know that Episcias love humidity and that streps like it on the drier cooler side.I know next to nothing about Kohleria.I still am trying to learn all of it myself but it is soo much fun trying and experimenting :)
That's Awesome! I LOVE trying new things.
Do any of you like to grow other things? In other words, do any of you have other "addictions" *lol*
I like to grow Crown of Thorns, Oxalis, Hoya and have just started getting into Lipstick & Goldfish Plants. I have a few others that I grow "just because I like them" not necessarily something I want to collect *lol* like Epiphyllum, Bilbergia Nutans, Pereskia, Adenium, All Blue Walking Iris, Pink Princess Philo, Parrot Impatiens, Rhipsalis Pilocarpa, Plumie, Easter Cactus and Christmas Cactus.
In fact, my Easter Cactus is from my Grandmother and it was loaded with buds earlier this summer. I put it on a plant stand on the picnic table and we got some HEAVY winds during the night. The next morning it was all over the ground and many pieces had broken off. I was so heart broken I cried and said "I can't deal with this right now, I'll deal with it tomorrow. I left it like that until the next day. The next day I went out, washed the pot and sprayed the dirt off my now dis-budded, broken baby and gently put everything back into the pot. At this point I decided that the reason we got the wind was because I needed to propagate this plant. I took a small pot, packed some soil and planted all the broken pieces. Well.........Today is September 27th and it's blooming AGAIN! This plant is SO beautiful. Not as many flowers this time but it's so special to me and she's blooming in my house.....nice and safe.... and ON her plant stand *lol*
I'm trying to grow alot of new things for my outside garden next year so that I have more to trade out there.
Most of you will recognize some of my plants because they are from trades from you :) I LOVE each and every plant and wouldn't have the collection that I do without the generous people here at Dave's and I want to thank you all for sharing you babies with me and helping me to learn so much about so many different kinds of plants. I love the challenges and triumphs but also learn very much with the disappointments :)
I'm going to try growing a Pride of Barbados from seed this year :)
I'm trying the "coffee filter" method and have baggies of datura stuck to my windows in my bedroom. I had Hardy Hibiscus spout in 2 days in the baggie :) I potted them up this morning before work.
There is always so many "new" things to do and that's what I love about growing plants and trying new things :) So much to research and learn about when you adopt something new *lol*
Thank you Nancy for organizing this :)
This sounds like a lot of fun. I would like to join. I have av's and streps. I have small plants and leaves - all types, lots of minis, and semi-minis.
I would love to get some other types of gessies if anyone has epis or other types and I would love to try some interesting house plants. The pink princess phil sounds really pretty. Anyone have a pic of that?
Some nice photo's of Philo 'Pink Princess' in Plant Files:
