Morning Glories 2007 #26
Beautiful glories Emma, love them all.
Hey Guys; Last year I purchased Blue-Picotee (double flowered)Morning Glories. The majority were singles.I did however select only seeds produced from the double flowers. Will this make a difference or not?
Thank you Jackie . . .
zebraman . . .
I am so glad to see these words:
"I did however select only seeds produced from the double flowers"
I have read that the DOUBLE flowers do not make seed pods, and I KNOW that I collected seeds from Doubles that I grew 2-years ago, and was beginning to doubt myself. But, I remember that my blooms were ALL the same on each vine. Out of 4-Vines, 3 had Doubles, and one had Single Blooms.
I would imagine that you should continue to get the Double Blooms from your seeds, but better let Ron or someone else answer that for you.
Maybe I misunderstood and I think we could both use some clarification.
Emma
With frost approaching around here, MG pics in context of their leaves and the sky are especially poignant - very lovely, Emma.
Zebra, if you self-pollinate and bag those doubles, there might be a higher percentage of doubles in the next generation. I can't say, though, how many generations you would have to repeat this process (Darwin called it "natural selection") to see a significant difference - "nothing attempted, nothing gained".
Also, it's possible that the appearance of so many single flowers for a supposedly double strain could have been a result of the exterior environment in which they grew.
There are some stresses that can change the physical appearance of a flower by inducing various types of enzymatic activity. Per Ron's post ( http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=3262581 ), these stresses can include: " temperature, minerals, various electro-magetic spectrum, mycorrhizal relationships(MHB) etc." Thus, he goes on to say, "a gene may be present but not expressed or only partially so..."
It's my guess that if a given environmental stress were constant, then perhaps natural selection over time could stabilize a chosen characteristic in this case, as well, too.

Emma - sorry, we crossed in cyberspace - I can't rewrite right now - will be back later - interesting question, Zebra

Seed can be produced from a double flower as long as there is enough functional pistil tissue >somewhere...the flower can be cross-pollinated from another flower that produces and donates pollen if no viable pollen is produced by the gestational flower...

Emma - Unfortunately, I did NOT tag this one:

I didn't even see the white streak until later that night when I was viewing the photos I took that morning. I am in such a big hurry in the mornings that I am lucky to even get the photos. I will watch more closely on the rest of the blooms of Plum Shadows.
I LOVE your Plum Splash! What a cool vine! The blooms are amazing! I planted a seed of what I thought was Plum Splash, but mine look more Picotee. Not patterns on the blooms. Does it start out plainer and then get more patterned blooms?
I will be d-mailing you later (when I have a moment) to send some photos for IDing. I have some blooms that I don't think are labeled correctly.
Your Purple-Flaked Shibori are really cool looking! What a neat pattern on those blooms! Beautiful!!!
Here is a little visitor on what I think is a Solid Pale Lavender bloom that is to the right of the Fuji Hot Pink Frost bloom.
Emma,
Those half/half's remind me of those country western shirts Garth Brooks used to wear on the CD cover photos... also in the 70's there were alot of clothes that were half and half.. really different in flowers though.
I really like that 2nd one.
Chantell,,,,,
I love that one.. those have me by my heart. If you get any extra seeds and can spare a few, I would love a couple.
i'll post some photos tomorrow, my camera is somewhere between the trees and the house tonight.
Very nice looking flowers everyone.
A.
We got pelted by rain the last 2 days and made a bit of a mess of my blooms, but the vines held up and are still going strong!
I think this one is of Plum Frost, but I notice now that the white frost edging is gone and the blooms are now a solid color. Very luxurious looking like satin! :-)

Karen -Blu . . .
Thanks re my Wedding Bells in the sky.
I do take a lot of shots like this when I can. I'll post a couple just for you. I like these too. So Serene.
Ron . . .
Thanks for the info re seeds produced from the Blue-Picotee double flowers.
Becky . . .
Neat photo

Also the bloom that you are referring to as Solid Pale Lavender bloom in this photo doesn't look solid to me.
Looks very much like my Lavender Chiffon
Also, this bloom looks like Lavender Mist
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=3994695
Lavender Mist is a Solid Pale Lavender.
Wow, Your Joyce Cobb is Nice!

Look back on the last Thread [I think it is the last one] where Karen showed various colors of her Joyce Cobb.
Antoinette . . .
Great comparision of my Purple-Flaked Shibori Blooms to Garth Brooks shirts. Very True!
I like this one too and have it tagged

Emma,
So interesting that you have discovered the blizzard I.cordatotriloba this year! Here is a picture of a flower from a wild stand I found last year: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=2694468
I saved seed form this plant, grew a few this year, and found that it reproduced itself. Mine are quite variable and seemed to produce more blizzards earlier in the year. The plants now seem to produce mostly white flowers and a few with a slight pink noticeable at the throat. I've got pictures on my other computer....
Did I send you seed for a white cordatotriloba? If I did, this seed came from the same wild stand. Could your plant have come from this seed, or are they older, perennial grow backs?
Arlan
Arlan . . .
Yes, you did send me some of your Whites, but I didn't know they came from your Blizzard. I didn't grow them this year.
The Whites that I have been growing I got from eBay that were being sold under another name that was not correct. After many photos of all parts of my blooms, Ron ID'd it as White I. cordatotriloba. This is year #2 that I have grown the White.
My Whites are all staying True - so far.
My Pinks just started blooming in this particular area a week or so ago, which is strange to me because the I. cordatotrilobas have been blooming for a while here now all in the area, but these particular vines ALWAYS bloom very late.
I have been ripping out the Pinks that try to creep into the White vines and almost ripped this section out too, but didn't have the time and so glad now that I didn't.
What a pleasant surprise when I saw these blooming today.
I am tagging the blizzards [which incidentally are on the 'Regular' Pink Vines as best I can tell so far and not on their own vines], so let me know if you want any of the seeds. Also let me know if you want any of my White seeds.
I will post a couple of photos. . .
Emma
This is the 'Regular' Pink growing with the Blizzards
Photo also taken today
I tried to post a side view and for some reason it won't attach the photo.
4 times I tried.
Hmmm
will show that one later
Emma,
The seeds that I collected last year came from a large waste area completely covered with pink I. cordatotriloba, except for one small area that had white flowers. When I "hiked" to the area of white flowers I noticed that some of the flowers were actually showing the faint blizzard. I tagged both white and blizzard vines and collected seed later. I have no way of knowing if they came from the same plant or not! Some of the seed that I had marked blizzard and that I grew this year produced pink, some white , and some blizzard. This may be a reflection on the inaccuracy of my seed collecting and marking though....
You may get a mix from the seed I sent you also...
Thanks for the offer of seed, but I am going to clear these plant out before they take over the place! With the limited time I get at home, I don't want to be fighting these plants for room to grow my project stuff!
Arlan
Hi Arlan,
Thanks for the information.
Yes, these will take over if you let them. I have mine growing in two places. One group is on a Chain link Fence, and the other around a Pecan tree. By the end of the summer they will have climbed high into the pecan tree.
Since these are a native in our area, I don't need to be growing them in my yard, and only left the group growing around the Pecan tree because they looked so pretty. The vines on the fence are the White Form.
Next year they will ALL be moved to my Alley so I'll have room to grow others as well.
Emma
