I got some rain and more rain from this storm dancing around over here near me..I live 35 miles west of Beaumont...waiting for daylights to come on up so I can see what damage this storm did here..I just finished after 2 years of cleaning my place up from Hurricane Rita...
Okay, Humberto..
So sorry ~ I will hope the damage is not as severe. At least it appears you are not in the dark. The news indicates 55,000 out of lights in Bmt.
Wishing all of you down there the best. Take care of yourselves
Hoping for the best....maybe it will die out soon.
I slept through the whole thing. Woke up this morning to a yard full of debris and streets flooded. I got out my camera after my first cup of coffee at 6 am and took some photos as the day began to lighten. Not all of the photos are the best.
My plants are the worse for wear, but everyone here is OK.
This was taken looking out at the front yard and street from my office window. It was 6:03 am
We've been planning on having a garage sale this week. It rained all day yesterday and things were covered in tarps. During the night, the tarps blew off and things got rather wet. Good thing I was getting rid of this stuff anyway. Fortunately, we'd brought a bunch of books and clothes and breakables into the house yesterday during a "dry" part of the day.
When Rita blew through here September, 2005, the latch was busted on this back gate. That big board has served as the latch since then. This morning when we woke up, we couldn't see the gate at all. I guess all the wind rattled the board enough that it dropped out. Thank heavens it didn't blow the gate off the hinges like we'd thought.
Overall view, one end to another of the yard. Really not too bad. The cannas and bananas will come back. Just a lot of debris to clean up in the front yard now.
I heard on the radio this morning that 75,000 were without power. We did lose power during the night (while I slept) but it's been back on since I woke up.
The folks in High Island got hit the worst.
Everyone in SE Texas went to bed last night expecting a big storm. No one expected a hurricane! There's a possibility of this storm making a big "D" and we may get hit again with the back side of it. Please keep us in your prayers.
Thanks,
Janet
Most definitely, Janet. Do you ever think of moving away from the coast? naahh, me either. We live in tornado alley and there have 3 come right through here in the years we've been here. 1994 almost took DeSoto and Lancaster off the map. Everybody just picks up and starts over. Are those cutter-quilts I see in the garage sale?
Kinda glad I didn't get your package off last week.....would just be one more thing to worry with.
Hi Christy,
We've been here since 1979 and will probably stay her a while longer. We moved here, from San Antonio, right after a big hurricane had hit here. We watched Bonnie come through in 1986. I left during Rita. And slept through Humberto. Lordy!!! I must sleep like the dead to have not heard a thing during the night.
I don't know about the cutter quilts. I do have a couple of quilts out there. My daughter has been making them lately. Smaller ones though. I think hers are cutter quilts. The ones I'm selling came from Goodwill originally.
Hugs heading your way,
Janet
cutter-quilt usually indicates some very worn areas that cannot be repaired. Some people (such as me) buy them and use them for fabric for lots of different things....vests, jackets, pillows, etc. would never, ever cut a quilt that was still in good shape. I quilt some but my mother was fantastic. Have a large collection of quilts from the family and those that she made. Someone will buy those the very first thing. With all your creative talent, I am surprised that you haven't made something.
Janet ~ glad it wasn't any worse than that! Amazing to have slept thru it. At least your big tree didn't have to come down again ~ the downside ~ the kitchen doesn't get another remodel... lol Good to hear you are all right. We watched fleets of utility trucks heading south to help. It is always so moving to see ~ we are truly blessed to live in this country. Take care pod
BTW, Did Connie do all right too?
Thank you Pod. We really are blessed beyond belief.
Connie had some plant damage. Mostly EE's and gingers. I went by there this morning. Unlike me, she was up an an ungodly hour watching as the wind came down her driveway. She said it was like a wall of white and lasted about an hour. There is a waybigo ancient oak in front of her house. One of the big branches was hanging by a "thread" close to the road. One of the news crews was out this morning filming the storm facing the wrong way on her one way street. She said a truck came down the road hauling butt (heading the correct direction). The truck stopped next to the news van and then started backing up. Suddenly it sounded like brakes squealing, which made no sense because the road was covered over with water. The truck had something on his front bumper. Do you think that will teach that idiot to slow down? I doubt it.
One of the biggest problems we have when we get heavy rains is streets being covered by water. Idiots come barreling down the road making wakes that head up into the yards. Homes that are close to the road really suffer when this happens.
I took more photos this afternoon after the major cleanup. I will have to download them later and post the photos of what's left tomorrow. It looks like the beginning of spring out there with all of the cannas and bananas whacked off. By this evening, there was already 4 inches of grown on the bananas. HAHAHAHA Go Bananas!!!! Hubby mowed/vacuumed (bagged) the debris that was in the yard. I swept the driveway and patio of millions of leaves from the trees. Once the sun came out, I also worked on the garage sale stuff, emptying candles and just generally trying to get stuff dry. Got it all covered back up with the tarps as the sun went down. We only had a little water get into the house at the french doors in the back. We're thinking it blew under the doors. It's been one long day around here and I'm glad to see the sun go down. My body feels like it's been run through a wringer washer. Calgon sounds really good right now. :-)
Janet
Take you away... LOL Tomorrow will be another day... Take care Janet !
Please tell me you are not going to open early for the GS.....well, of course, you will....what could I have been thinking.....
HAHAHAHAHA As soon as I get up, if the weather permits, I will remove the tarps and let the sunshine work on that stuff again. There is still plenty of stuff in the garage on bookshelves. One way or another, the stuff has got to go!
Janet
There are many that would die to have the garden you have now. Had I not seen the before I would not have known this was an after. At least it is fall and many things begin to go dormant for the winter. As my grandsons say "it be alright". pat, pat, pat.
You need to rest your body, girl. Take care of yourself.
We crossed. The second picture is sort of sad......nevermind....you weren't hurt and that is what really matters. The bed will come back.
The rest of the photos are just as sad. That back fence was covered in cannas and what I just found out was October Rose Hibiscus. I don't suppose those will be blooming after all. In all honesty, I have complained about them since they went in and took over that new bed I made this year. On a happier note, there is a planter in that first photo that you can see on the right. Hillary planted seeds in a little container and was so proud of them. She told me to water them for her. They got HUGE!!!! I'd been planning on putting them into the ground. Now I'm glad I didn't. Because they were in the center island, they didn't get ruined.
All of the plants in the front did just fine. Even the coleus in the new bed in the front. They were leaning a bit, but I propped them with some bamboo poles and they will be just fine. :-)
Moondene, now that you've had the day to assess your situation, how did you fair?
So glad you are all right, Janet! I was amazed when I woke up and they said Humberto had turned into a hurricane! I was keeping all of you east of us in my prayers when the weatherman said it was heading away from Houston. That's just not fair - Rita and Humberto in two years.... Good luck in drying out and saving the plants. They look battered, but whole.
Anyone over that way - let us DG'rs know if you need replacements for anything!
My cattle panel arch was listing to starboard, but other than than and some wind-beaten roses, no damage. Glad I moved a little north!
My sweetie, however... he was stranded in Vegas at a seminar for Rita, and there again this past week! He heard from a neighbor that the oak in his back yard finally yielded -- took part of his house, part of his neighbor's house, his shed (where he keeps the generator...), and the power lines with it. He will be home to a mess this evening. I've told him to leave it until tomorrow and just come stay with me, but I doubt he will. It has rained SO much there lately (Orange Co.) I'm sure the root ball was just completely saturated. Ah, well.
I slept through it, too.
BW, so far this year, I've been keeping up pretty closely with all of the storms. Mainly because I now have new DG friends in the Islands now. Can't imagine how Humberto snuck in and got under my radar, but he did. And boy howdy, did he catch us all by surprise here.
The fall is coming and most of the cannas and bananas would have been cut back anyway. I'm just not used to seeing so much fence out there. I can see all the way across my yard from any given point now. As I said before, it reminds me of the beginning of Spring when things are just starting to grow.
There was a lot of garden art out there in the back yard, none of which was tossed around like I'd feared upon awakening.
As for the garage sale, I've been laundering the linens, etc. that could be washed. I loaded up quite a few contractor's bags with puzzles and games. I couldn't see jigsaw puzzles actually fitting after being rained on. Everything else is drying out just fine and the garage sale will go on as planned.
BL, I am so sorry to hear about your sweetie's house. Mother Nature can be so cruel sometimes. I'll be saying a prayer that he gets things back in order really soon.
It's a beautiful day today. I'm counting my blessings!
Janet
Brigidlily ~ glad to hear you didn't suffer much damage ~ did you get lots of rain?
Please, please tell your sweetie to stay home in the summer ~ save the Vegas trips for non hurricane season... lol
It sounds like it was a GOOD THING he wasn't home. We wouldn't want anyone getting hurt! Trees are soooooooo unforgiving!!!
Janet
Been there, done that ~ right Janet?
You are so right material things can be repaired and replaced. Hope things are getting back to normal there. Are the utilities being restored fairly quickly this time?
How right you are! 2 trees on the house thanks to Rita and I was very thankful that hubby was at my BIL's house when it happened. Power was out for almost 3 weeks then.
Yesterday our power wasn't out for long. Yesterday morning we drove downtown to check on one of hubby's jobsites and the traffic lights were sporadic. I haven't heard anything about the power since then.
