It's beginning to look like the tropics,5,wintering in!

Hillsborough , NC(Zone 7a)

TMan, I tried Beyer systemic this spring against the dreaded spider mites. Worked well for about 3 months. I certainly didn't get 12 months protection from it. Of course, maybe I didn't use enough, or maybe it's that my soil drains in a flash. I have a little left, this time I am going to give it another try on my most mite prone brug and see what happens.

Sorry to hear about the moths, hope they're not the ones that lay the web worms!

Did you get the bad rainfall in Texas today LouC?

Home made organic white oil

Pour one cup of cooking oil into a blender. Add1 and 1/2 cups of
water and 1 teaspoon of household detergent.
Blend to a cream.

This is to be broken down into one part white oil to fifty parts water.
This controls insect pests on ornamental and indoor pests...and can be used as a leaf gloss too.Spray when it is not too hot.
We can buy a white oil preparation here in Australia but you can make your own if it is not available to you ...this "smothers"the critters....spray under leaves as well as above.
Sorry everyone but I only use stuff in my garden that won't kill the frogs and bees.
Good luck TM and if you must use poison use a mask.

Emory, TX(Zone 8a)

The above mentioned Anti-Stress 2000 is not a poison. It is an anti-transpirant. That was designed to keep plants from wilting due to stress. A side effect of the product is it keeps away the mites etc. because it forms a protective "coating" on the plant.

Oh yard queen hi!....I mean't TMs stuff ....we have anti- transpirant product very expensive (not that name) but I was not aware that it killed bugs too...wow that is interesting.....never used it myself.:)

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

BHM,they have the Bayers complete now, granular, that says last to 12 months,it's suppose to be for the yard, but heck, little dab a do you!!!LOL

Thanks yardqueen,I'll check it out, need to get something to spray on my palms that winter outside anyways!!

Chrissy,I'll make some, doesn't matter if corn oil, veggie oil or Canola oil???

Texas gal77,did you get the heavy rains from Humberto???

just any veg oil is ok....sorry you obviously know your business who am I to tell you what to do * blushing and scuffing my flip flops* but I am worried about poisons.....wouldn't want anything to hurt our TM
I am a faded flower child who digs organic jungles! ha ha ha
even if the chokos fall and almost knock me out llike they did today
they were so heavy they caused me to see stars!
Can't believe they were still up there hiding in the tree......I must have harvested hundreds this year....the big white no prickle ones...
do you eat chokos?

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Choko? Is that a coconut? If so, yes we eat them but they don't grow here where I am at all.....buy them at the grocery but they are so hard it is easier to buy the flaked in sealed plastic bags.

No rain in North Central Texas but the coast is getting hammered. Janet posted on one of the Texas threads and said it hit her at 3:30 AM. 70,000 without power in her town of Beaumont. Houston is getting the rain and they don't need it. Lots of "stuff" going on in the Texas forum.....take a peek.

Emory, TX(Zone 8a)

Chrissy,

It was not designed to do that, and was accidentally discovered. It does not kill them, but it makes a barrier that prevents them from attacking the plant. That may mean they move elsewhere... so other susceptable plants would need to be sprayed. It also has been reported to stop black spot on roses and other fungal outbreaks on plants such as powdery mildew and rust

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Tropicman, we got a little rain, but the worst missed us! Whew....was worried about Janet tho!

TMan, the Beyer I used was the 12 month one....no 12 months for me!

I also use the oil / soap mix everyweek (1 Tbs oil, 1 Tbs soap, 1 gallon of water.) Does a great job if I am consistant with the spray schedule....We have summer all year here so it's an on-going battle for me.

Yardqueen, I have also been reading about the AntiStress stuff with great interest on a couple of other forums. Sounds like it might be a winner. Going to have to try it on some of the small brug seedlings, not sure about the ones that are getting to be large trees though...

More rain for Janet, how sad. They have had more than their share this year.

ha ha ha Chokos are not coconuts ....I think you call then Chayotes!
mine weigh over 2 pounds....and fell from over 20 ft....they were hiding in a tree.
Gee that stress guard sounds interesting.....I knew it was designed to reduce the"stress" of being moved....looks like it may have other benefits.
We have been saturated as well.....after the years of drought it is a big change....just as well because although only just into the second week of Spring it is going to hit 83F today in my district....too hot for many of the Spring blossoms.
I hope all who need it get rain....here in Oz we have been warned of huge price increases in food because of the failure of huge quantities of our crops...first the drought then abnormal freeze and now floods in many places....between the floods and the still existing drought in many areas......the food crops are just about ruined. Does this sound familiar? will your food prices go through the roof? I am so glad I grow a lot of my own stuff.Bread and milk has jumped up three times in the last 4 months.....
yardqueen are you the lady with the beautiful AngelsTrumpets?

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh Chrissy, our food has been up and going higher for a long time. The price of oil has a direct bearing on food. Tractors, trucks, processing, packaging (all plastic in any form is a petroleum product) delivery....on and on ad infinitum. Were we to know the exact cost per potato, for instance, we would probably choke. Funny about the "coconut", boy was I ever way off. Two pound weight from a 20 foot height.....ok one of you engineer types, how heavy would that actually be? Yes, sounds like hard hat area to me. BTW oil touched $80.00 today. Looks like we should all be planting Victory Gardens in every square inch.
Have decided to scrounge things around to make a GH in one side of the attached garage.
Someone else mentioned in another thread they are giving their tropicals away....cannot afford to heat the GH this year.

We have come off a 5 year drought. There has been no hay. This year could have cut 4-5 times....instead the fields are so wet, the tractors can't get in and some places haven't gotten even 1 cut. Goodness, hope it isn't as bad as it sounds.

Emory, TX(Zone 8a)

Chrissy,

Well I have Angel Trumpets... where did you see them?

We sure are like Texas ... aren't we ..same here tractors bogging......
I grow a lot of food in pots and polystyrene fruit boxes...you can grow good things even without a veggie bed....and for folks with difficulties if you place them up on a bench you can happily garden without too much pain (for those with bad backs etc)

Well I am a bit shy....(stop laughing I can hear you....it's true!) so I just have a look at everything...I think they were in the Brugs forum or the Texas one....one day I will be brave enough to say hello over Texas way...but I think they might be bored as it seems we are just the same :) You really love them don't you so do I (your Angels I mean)

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

I CAN'T stop laughing!!!!! You! Shy!! Right....! Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever met a shy Ozzie! One of the things we love about you! Jump right in and stir the waters!

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Chrissy, you SHY? LOL Nooooooooooooo! Don't think so! (Smile :0) )

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Yeah, both of you. I've been stirring the pot a little over there this week. We have way too many lurkers and not enough participants. Got a couple of new faces now. Chrissy, would you like for me to formally introduce you? I think that may be a first on DG...maybe.

Now how could we go about it....ahem...Ladies and Gentlemen, Would like you to meet one of our good, good friends. Her feet are planted in Australia but her heart holds the world. Ms. Chrissy.

And another of the greatest of the great who is truly a world citizen having lived on every continent (I think) and another fun personality, Ms. IslandShari.

Now I am rather possessive so don't try to get too close. I found them first. So there!

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Tooooooo bad, scoot over! Make way......we all have to be able to give them hugs!! Group hug!!!!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Well that sounds a little exclusive.....I can never seem to say things right.
Tman, Kaperc, Braveheart, and Pepper come on over.

Tgal and yardqueen are very familiar with our crazy Texas Forum.

Had I not been nosey and scanned the Tropical Gardening I would have missed some really, really great moments. Might be that Texas could give you some new information.

~ Horticultural Oil Recipe ~

This can be used on ANYTHING

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=820683

I left out 3 important things .

As with other sprays and chemicals .................... not spray in the hot sun .
~~~~
Do not use corn oil as it turns into a sticky mess and has killed some of my plants.
~~~~~

Use cheap dish soap with out grease cutters . Lemon dish soap adds an extra punch ;-)
( this recipe was made long before they started adding all the anti grease/bacteria chemicals.)

Otherwise it is a wonderful lil concoction.
~S

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Christie, I was just picking on your "being possessive" of Chrissy and Shari. I don't think anyone thought that you were being exclusive! They all know our Southern Hospitality!

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Great recipe! My Mom used to use something like that on her plants!

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

Chrissy, you shy?? HA!!!! Not a chance lady!!! :~p

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

My gosh! I need to give group hugs to everyone! Christi keeps promoting me waaaay beyond my humble reality....love you dear! So good to see/hear new faces/voices! Welcome to our little tropical garden party!

Scooter - thanks for posting that - I use it all the time, and have to go re-read a bunch of posts to find it when I run out....for some reason, I always misplace the recipe, or it gets all mucked up and illegible! (Can't figure out why - ha ha).

Chrissy - Happiest of birthday wishes to your darlin'dear! Have a fun day!

Don, here we go again! I don't know if you will ever be able to keep us OT....but ain't it fun in the chaos?

Emory, TX(Zone 8a)

Scooter,

About the recipe... Is this also not to be antibacterial soap... I wonder if you can still find a plain soap...

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

LOL!!!
Shari, lots of fun reading while I'm gorging my tummy with a fresh open watermelon!!!!
Don't know why I can't eat it without salt.oh I know because it just don't taste right!!!LOL

Don't leave me out of the group huggggg!!!!
Just be careful of the lite tap on the hiney!!!!LOL
Sorry bad habit of mine,hereditary!!!!LOL

Lou,saw on the news tonite you all have this jelly like stuff down at the lake, even in the trees!!,but when the sun hits it,dries up like a sycamore leaf!!,I have some veggie oil,but have to find the plain dish soap, excuse me while I salt and bite,of melon!!!

Funny thing happened,I ordered a pool cover solar blanket, had to pay high price shipping and handleling, only to find out they had a warehouse in town and could have picked it up myself!!!!,less than 3 miles from the house, and they shipped it UPS!

Chrissy, never had a choko, what does it taste like, never see them at the supermarket either.,Oh by the way 86*f here today nice cool fall weather!!

Yardqueen , yup I only use plain ol dish soap and it is usually cheaper too. Look around at dolar stores maybe you can find that old white soap. I get original Palmolive for the kitchen .
:-)

btw, I think that recipe is from a old old Mother Earth News when it used to be a little booklet size . I'm tossing a pile of those sure wish I knew someone that would like them.

Emory, TX(Zone 8a)

Scooter,
Thanks for the info on the soap..I will check out $ stores this week end!

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Don...Of Course you are included in the hug!!!! No question! But - you've never had a chayote? Small, pear shaped, lite green squash? Wow! I thought it was universal, because it is a staple food in our house (well, was). Mostly pretty bland, but adds a bit of thickener to soups and stews...can be stuffed like an acorn squash...cut up in salads like zuccini and summer squash... tastes, well...sort of squashy!

As far as the soap...the only kind here that is not anti-bacterial is the Dawn Botanicals - I use the lemon grass. And I add a wee bit of Neem oil and a clove (to discourage ants). Seems to work for me.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Thanks!
All men enjoy a hug every now and then!!!!
First I ever heard of clove being used,in the old days I heard they used tobacco soak in water to make a insect spray, this during the Victorian days.

In the middle of the country, the stores only carry the fruit and veggies, that are normally grown around the area, except for the coconuts, and citrus fruits.

We eat squash, bake with butter and honey,or fry the yellow squash, but not really big eaters of squash.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Scooter, see if a nursing home, dentist/dr office would want your books. I often take magazines to the nursing home.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Thanks LouC☺

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

your welcome

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

don, can i ask a couple of questions? how long is your growing season? and you drag all this stuff out every year?? and you plant it every year and then dig it up? you inspire me!!

Wow Tm ....watermelon with salt?....I suppose to each their own I guess I like lemons with salt.......I will try it because I am a salt loving type....about chocko....I slice big thickish slices and toss them in extra virgin olive oil...place in a baking dish either on their own.. or with other vegs like carrot and potatoes onions etc...a little garlic and rosemary and roast turning every now and then for about 1 to 2 hrs depending on the sizes of the veg pieces....about 15 mins before serving ...remove from the oven and sprinkle a few drops of balsamic vinegar over the vegs...put back in the oven again and allow the vegs to finish caramelizing.I promise you will love it! texture....like Shari said squash like but a firmer texture if not overcooked....I make choko pickles and they are also terrific in curry....taking up the flavour of whatever they are cooked with . See picture of one of my choko bombs lodged in the twisted willow I can't reach it ....not even with a rake...I will have to wait for the next big wind to throw it down. Hi everyone else......gosh one day away and so much to catch up on ......:)

Ok. Now I recognize it. Because we have such a large population of Mexicanos our produce depts reflect it. See them all the time just never bought one. I'll print your recipe, Chrissy and give it a try.
