My BIG dogs found a baby turtle so I picked it up as I wanted to save the turtle. I took the baby turtle and
put him/her close to the water far from my backyard and then had to leave him. I put him under tall grass
near the water so he had a chance of survival. I am not sure who kills/eats turtles.
My dogs will not get to him/her but it looked so lonely in that area where I finally put the turtle. Did I do the
right thing or should I have left the turtle in my yard. Was Mama turtle close by?
found baby turtle
Hi AL,
I'm not sure if you did the 'right' thing, as I don't know much about
turtles, but I give you two thumbs up for caring, and for trying.
One year I found two babies right next to one another, the cutest
things ever, but I knew they could die in captivity, so all I could think
of to do is what you did, move them close enough to the water so
they could go forth if they so chose.
Ours were washed in when a heavy rainfall created a creek in our
back yard, so I would imagine Mom was nowhere close.
:-) Thanks for caring!
I am no turtle expert, but we have many here. The eggs are laid early in the spring and hatch about this time of year.
Mother turtles never see their babies.
The turtles after hatching dig their way up to the surface and go to water.
So I would say, helping the little guy to water was a good thing to do.
