Please- Is this a snake or worm?

San Angelo, TX(Zone 7b)

My son brought this to my husband and me. We don't know where he found it, but it was outside. It was already dead. The close up picture shows what I think are scales. I think it's a baby snake and he thinks it's a worm.
Any ideas? Where could I look up snakes?
Thank you for any help, Elizabeth

I'm trying to look up snakes, no luck.
I'd like to know since my 2 year old brought it to me! Kinda scary!
a few years ago, there was a boy who was "playing with worms" by the river and the "worms" kept biting him. They were baby snakes and the boy didn't live. Real scary!!

I think the first picture looks like a snake. ...Yikes!!

Let us know if you figure it out!

I think it might be a western blind snake or a Texas blind snake.

Harmless, but still yikes!!

I'm thinking that worms don't have a head and snakes do; so does it look like you can tell one end from the other? I can't tell from the photo..but Yikes either way ; ya don't want the baby to be messing around w/it.

I saw eyes. Plus, it was hurt and it had blood. I thought worms had yellow stuff.
I think it might have been moving and he stepped on it.
In West texas you can't be too careful!!

Elizabeth, you can take it to your local USDA Service Center (to the Natural Resources of Conservation side) or to a Conservation department if you have one close by. Either of them should be able to tell you for sure.

I think I just might do that. I'm curious to know what it is. There could be more, and if it's a baby--there's a mom and dad somewhere! Having two boys I guess I'm in for this kind of thing alot:)

That's a worm! Night crawler ~ DH looked at it too, and says he'd bet my life on it. ??

The first picture really looks like a snake, you can see the scales, but the second picture does really look like a worm. Wierd.
I found a baby snake once that was only about 2" long, it had a head, little flipping tongue, the works. It was about the size of an embrodery needle. Fasinating.
Nice that your son is interesting in nature. Hard to keep them from touching it and bringing it inside the house. LOL

LOL Nah, I kinda like him.

What color are night crawlers? Do you fish with them? There are small snakes that live in the ground and are blind. They only grow a little more than 8". (Full grown) I was leaning towards that??

where i am they baby ground rattlers look something like that. does it move in a 's' like movement?

Sadly it was dead when he brought it to me. My grandparents lived in Birmingham.

Night crawlers are excellent for fishing. What helped was that I happen to have the same paper towels so I could figure out the actual size.
