Gail... I just recently got my start with Kohlerias... one I ordered by rhizome and one Amy sent me a cutting of. I was trying to prime myself with some information, so I wrote to Keyring about them, then found the thread she started about them too. There is some very good information here... hope it helps. Your rhizomes certainly look healthy enough.

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/658418/

The rhizome I ordered of 'Beltane' from an eBay seller was so small I was actually frightened to plant it... I actually had two small pieces no more than half an inch long each. I am happy to say that both pieces have sprouted and are producing leaves now! And already fuzzy! Too cool!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I think I am going to try putting them in perlite and vermiculite to get started in a plastic bag like Keyring said??????????????????

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Gail... this is the info Keyring gave me by private dmail, when I asked her about them. I have copied and pasted the exact info as sent in the dmail.

Keyring wrote...
"They can be planted in moist mix just below the surface. As they are small, I wouldn't break them up. (Kohleria rhizomes can be broken up - smallest unit is a "scale" which can be treated like seed.) Don't let them dry out because they will dessicate and shrivel up. I often put them with leaves - light mix in a humid environment with consistent moisture (but not soggy). Once they sprout, you can treat them like plants again."

This is what I did with mine, then I set them outside under a shade cloth... bright light but little direct sun. It is still very humid here, so I knew it would get more humidity out there than in my apt. I kept the soil moist. I think it took about two weeks, maybe a bit less, before they popped up out of the soil. They are only about half an inch high right now, but both have a full set of leaves. I've been taking photos, and they are on my home computer, but i can't send them from home right now... *grrrrrrrrr!!!!!!*

thanks, WildRose..............................better idea..............

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

I told you those rhizomes looked like grubs Gail!! LOL

Thank you for the info VA Rose, I recently re-potted my Kholerias and found a few rhizomes that I separated out but I didn't take the time to research how to re plant them (kicking self!!) and I've lost some of them now! I need to go dump the poor things out again and start over with what I have left.....put them shallower in the mix and get them into some humidity!

Gail when I potted up those hoya leaf cuttings I knew next to nothing and once again didn't research enough so they got put into a light hoya mix and stuck on the shelf with the other hoyas! It's a miracle I have any new growth at all!!!Just shows you how tough they are, they can survive even me!! The picture I showed above is the day I potted them up. I need to go take a new picture showing the little green stem that is poking up now with the five leaves that are left.

Cedarnest that is one gorgeous bloom and I have heard the scent is amazing!

Rain the scent on the finlaysonii was really powerful at night and not great (to me) but in the morning it was much lighter and pleasant. Interesting how the scent is generally strongest in the evenings and at night with the hoyas. I do love these leaves, one of my most favorites!

SusanGa the Hoya Multiflora is an excellent choice as it blooms readily. I ordered one from Robs and it was just a dinky little thing when it arrived but when it was four inches tall it bloomed it's first bloom and has now done so regularly 6 more times in less than a year!! It is a bushier one and it likes to stay at least damp.... unlike most other hoyas.

Want to stay and talk more but my 11 month old granddaughter is playing at the electrical outlet!! She can find one that the safety plug has been pulled out of faster than anything!! :)))

thanks for all your encouragement, Brenda

Ok, I couldn't remember which thread where we were discussing the Hoyas, finally found it again. Y'all must check out this link! She's a lady here on DG and she has a WONDERFUL collection. Look at these photo's. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/764740/#top

..... and Rain, if you see this ... she lives in Knoxville and grows some hoya's under lights!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I am a little late to this party but l am enjoying all the news on everyone's hoyas, etc. I have been so blessed with lots of very nice ones from Gail , Raingazer's shopping and shipping of a lacunosa basket, Plantladylin's cuttings from several varieties, all of which I am thrilled for. Winter will be so much brighter with all these lovely plants. Love them.

I was going to post on the hoya forum asking about growing under lights but decided I am going to give it a try anyway.

Jannich - I will plant some kohleria rhizome scales this time along with planting the rhizomes in the usual way. There were so many rhizomes in the one 2 1/2" pot of kohleria 'Laura'. Plus, there were a few seedpods along with rhizomes growing on the stems above ground. All I can say is this plant wanted to ensure the survival of the species very badly.

Plantladylin - thanks for that link

Ah ha!! Finally found it!! I couldn't remember which thread the Hoyas were on, either Lin. LOL

Here's my haul for the last two days. Brenda got me as her buddy in the September houseplant swap, and what had I asked for...Hoyas, of course (and Gessies! LOL)! She sent me a huge, gorgeous assumed-to-be Krinkle 8 clone. Look at this beauty!

Thumbnail by RainGazer

Here's the other side of it. I am definitely doing a Happy Snoopy dance over this one!! :o)

Thumbnail by RainGazer

She also sent me Hoya 'Krimson Queen'. Isn't this beautiful? It's got one solid white leaf. :o)

Thumbnail by RainGazer

She also sent a bunch of Hoya curtisii cuttings (those are soaking right now, but I'll pot them up later tonight) and rhizomes of Kohleria 'Mother's Lipstick'. Thank you sooo much, Brenda!! They're all simply fabulous! :o)

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Amy those are Awesome!! Brenda grows such beautiful plants!!Oh thats it!! Next month I am matching Brenda up with me for the houseplant swap!! LOL..You hear that Brenda?? hee hee

Jan, those Kohlerias look wonderful! I think I'll try that scale-flicking idea with the rhizomes Brenda sent me, just to see how it works. I always plant the rhizomes sideways, because I can't tell which end is which. LOL Maybe next time I should wait til they sprout before I plant them...

Snow, I'm so glad to see you got that computer fixed quickly and are back here with us! :o) On the Hoyas under lights subject, I saw where several people on the Hoya board have theirs under lights, so it must be an acceptable way to grow them.

Lin, I asked Mel if she gave tours of her home and greenhouse with all those Hoyas! LOL

LOL Nancy! Never hurts to have a little insider information, does it? ;o)

(Zone 1)

Aren't the Hoyas just fabulous plants? Can't really compare them with other plants, they are just so special in their own way with those thick waxy leaves and the blooms .... aaaaah, especially if they are fragrant! That's just icing on the cake!

I read something either late last night or this morning and I can't remember where I saw it, but it said that H. Curtisii likes dense shade! That's probably why mine is failing .... it's getting morning sun! I need to go move it right now, while I'm thinking about it!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lin, I just got back home from going to Helen's nursery and tossing her all my hoyas and asked her to start rooting..............and taking more cuttings.........took her a lot of other things, too...................she is going to take the shooting stars and fishtail and root them first in water.............then in the soil=less mix they go..............

Amy, you hit the jackpot with Brenda being the donor!!!!!!!!!! great looking plants

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

In the latest AV magazine Sept./Oct. issue just received today, on page 25 is a gorgeous photo of a sinningia 'Mackenzie' showplant exhibited by Kathy Lahti. I flipped when I saw it.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I haven't gotten mine yet.............even went by the post office this afternoon................

When I go to Austin Oct. 11th or something.................that is my main purpose..........to find pretty unusual gesneriads...................can't wait to get there...............

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

You are more than welcome Amy! They look great all potted up! I picked that same pot for the twin to that Krinkle 8 clone except mine is green!

Cedarnest sounds like a deal to me, if your going to go to all the work of organizing and running the swap you ought to get to hand pick your swapper! LOL

Lin that green house etc of the gal from the hoya forum is really something!!! I think she said somewhere on that thread that your welcome to bring scissors if you come tour it.....better line that up Rain!!

Well Blash opened her bloom today!! There are a few more little flowers (I don't really know what they're called, the whole thing is an umbel so I'm assuming each individual little bloom is a flower) that need to open up but most of them are open. I can honestly say that this is the first flower I have seen that looks better in a picture than in person. With the naked eye it is hard to see the details as the color is so uniform but in the picture it shows up the details beautifully....

I meant to tell Lin that those cuttings from Hoya L ............... that smells so good had a bloom with the cuttings............helen was fascinated and wants to compare the bloom with another one she has................
Brenda..........you are really off to a running start with these babies..............

Ah yes, Brenda, what else but the "Plant Spa" for that one! LOL I won't use it as a self watering pot, but did put perlite in the bottom, just in case some water collects in the dish. 'Blash' is beautiful!

Someone on the Hoya forum was looking for houseplants, so I traded them some Gessies for Hoyas. :o) This is Hoya pubicalyx, purple splash, but I'm not sure if that's a cultivar name or description. I've asked about that... This is the one I was talking about with the fabulous leaves!

A closer view of the leaves.

And Hoya obovata.

The H. pubicalyx, H. obovata, and the H. fungii on the left in that picture are plants, and the others are cuttings. I've now got the cuttings in gallon ziploc bags and hopefully they'll root up very nicely! :o)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

wow, Rain....................those are great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! good for you.................

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Oh Rain those are awesome!! What a great trade. I know he is just as happy with everything you would have sent him!!

I just got fungi in the mail yesterday and those are more leaves to love! I ordered through eBay from cowboyflowerman and I received some nice plants at a good price. I need to take pictures but the days just get away from me when the grandkids are here, maybe this weekend

That splash, is a gotta have, the leaves are gorgeous!! I have an australis but it's a different ??? species??? I don't know how they define them...still learning. I also have an obovata, it was my first whole plant purchase from HI because I think the leaves are amazing, so thick and round!

Gail what a great friend you have to do some rooting of all your great hoyas! I bet they'll be done in a jiffy with her expertise and her green house. I'm going to start playing with some in a mini greenhouse (in my house) here soon. Can't wait!

~Brenda

Thanks Gail, guess I should have read the whole thread.....but those pics get my attention every time.

(Zone 1)

Wow! Rain, you sure made a Great Trade!! I love the leaves on that pulicalyx ....

I have a feeling the Hoya Forum has aquired a few new addicts!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Susan, you addressed me..................what did i say to you? (LOL)

Brenda, he sure seems to be tickled with what was in his box. He did a fabulous job of potting everything up, too! I sent him a S. pusilla in bud and it traveled very well, so hopefully yours will, too. My goal was create a new Gessie addict, so I've got my fingers crossed that it worked. ;o)

He told me that is actually H. pubicalyx 'Pink Silver', so I can mark that one off my wishlist! Shows how dumb I am when it comes to Hoyas. I had it and was still looking for it! LOL I don't know about the H. fungii. There are so many different Hoyas and so much confusion surrounding them, I haven't even tried to figure them out yet. ;o)

Thanks Gail and Lin! I'm sure tickled with them and yes, Lin, I think a new Hoya addict has just been created! LOL
