Fast growing to block neighbors

San Diego, CA

I live in San Diego and we're about to put in a pool. I need something along my fence to block the view from the neighbors upstairs window...this mean something FAST growing and TALL that won't be too messy for the pool. Suggestions?
Thanks!

I'm not sure what these are...only flower at this time of year..grow about 10-15ft. tall..self supporting..make excellent barriers...could post you some tubes...

As you can't see...no neighbors...

San Diego, huh? Well, I have no idea what grows out there, but I bet your county cooperative extension office has a horticulturalist that can help you choose the best plant to get. Not only for privacy, but also for the soil conditions, sun exposure, etc., at your home. ....It shouldn't cost you anything to pick their brain. Hope that helps.

Thank you for your suggestions. I had another who said to call a MasterGardener here in San Diego and they would come to the house and give their thoughts!

Hi CaGardener,

How tall would the block need to be, and
how long before the pool will be in use?

Some of the privet hedges are fast growing, get pretty tall, and are dense enough so you can't see thru them.

It would have to be about 25-30ft and the pool goes in in the next 9 months.

Shucks. I was going to say Arundo Donax.

Most places I've seen up here in N.Cal use it as a 3.5ft hedge which requires a great deal of trimming. Out neighbours use it as a privacy screen on their back fence and it is well over 12ft at the moment. One of the things I like about it is that it has a nice columnar shape to it.
