T-shirts!!

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Have y'all ever seen Jacqie Lawson's cards? Here is her "Tropical Treat".
Something along the end result of the card would be nice!

Maybe using plumeria and BOP for the flowers...
And I really liked the phrase... "When I'm not in the garden..."

Just another idea...

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

While not meaning to be insulting at all....my personal opinion would be using the pictures/and or art work of the tropical gardening members who have worked so hard to bring us together. Rose, jl is great but I don't have any personal connection to her as I do others on this thread. Wouldn't try to name them because I would be sure to accidentally leave someone out.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

I agree that the pictures need to be from the members ( with their permission ). This is the only way this can be done properly. Photo shopping any of these ideas is fun but for any usable design to be made up would require high quality picture files to be supplied and permissions to crop and blend them into a single usable file.

The example above used 4 different pictures that were cut, cropped, layered and fused into a single picture. The same thing can be done by anyone using a photoshop type program.

Remember that if you decide to allow the use of your pictures for this project, that before the actual product is created it will require your original photo and not the small file sized ones used here on the internet for it to print with clarity and look good.

I also like the idea of a logo on the front and the larger picture on the back as well as having tropical garden flowers incorporated into it so that it depicts both the land and the sea garden concept.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Someone just mentioned a great idea to me, and I want to put it forward....tank tops. For so many of us - John, myself, Carol and Jenny....working in the garden is HOT work....how would you guys feel about tanks? I love it, cuz I can wear em over my suit when I go out on the water, but still be proudly showing my "colors"! Whadayatink?

And I am so happy to see all the new "voices" in our little tropical garden! You guys need to start participating in the rest of this forum! Valuable DG vetrans could add tons of info to an already active and lively group! Jump on in - the water's fine and have you checked out Tropicman's gorgeous Kansas tropical garden? Waaaay Cooool!!

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Tank tops would be great for those of you who actually live in a tropical environment. For me a sweat shirt wold make more sense ;~}

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Though I am not personally crazy about BoP plants...the flower is beautiful. I think that though I love plumies and orchids....they have their own forums, and I was hoping to keep this one unique, so I don't think I could vote for a single pic of either of those.....and, unfortunately the fern frond was already used in the NEG shirts. Obviously we can have more than one design....so I will be trying to stick with something not always used....

Maybe a lei? Or a pineapple and shells as in the JL greeting card that Rose posted?(I love that scene btw!)

I'll repeat Carol's question: What is truly indicative of the tropics?

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

I would imagine that once we come up with a design and phrase, we can have them put on several items.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

When I think tropics I think of palm trees, pinapples, Hibiscus blossons, orchids, birds of paradise, Taro leafs..... and... and...jungle vines and....

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

I think some of the sites where they put your design on to a product will actually put it onto almost anything you want. So you could pick style, color, etc.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Hi All, I hope you don't mind but I thought id help clear up a few things for you as we just went through most of it our selfs. Once you find a design and slogan....or several as we have done on the Northeast Forum. One or two people go to zaggles "design your own t-shirt" and make one or more. It will have a save button and instructions on how to allow for public viewing. Post the site here so others can go and view them. If you have several designs to choose from, all will be pleased. Each person can go individually and purchase the color and style of their own shirt. You can choose from Tank tops, short sleeve, layered look, sweatshirts, ect... and you can also change the font color if the shirt is dark and you want to see the writing better.
Also when you buy the shirts, the person who designed it will get a kick back of $. At the Northeast Forum we have decided that since it was a group effort, the money would be saved for the group RU's.
Hope I didn't over step my boundries amd have been at least a little bit of help. Have fun and good luck!!
Celeste

We would need to pass this idea through Dave and ask for permission to use the Daves garden name and logo in this way.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

I believe that this is the same company that Dave uses.....which would be a good thing. Should we be getting permission from Dave before this gets too far involved? I am all for it just trying to think of some other angles. The main thrust of Tropical Gardening as we know it here on DG has been the undersea pictures posted by John and Shari. That is the part that I would want to commemorate. Depends on just what the goal is. Generic tropics or from our own threads. Now all this coming from the middle of Texas.....I hardly qualify as tropical.....only love these people that so generously share with all the joys of being islanders. Presently listening to Bro. Iz as he sings of his love of Hawaiia.....what beauty.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

I was typing same time you were Zany

Thanks, Celeste!

On the NE forum they submitted the designs to Terry and she OK'd them. If you look at this thread http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/765414/#new
you'll see what steps they went through.

BTW, have you all seen the site Dave set up with the logos so you can order what you want? That will give you an idea of how it works, too. http://www.zazzle.com/davesgarden

We cross-posted, Christi. :-)

Just throwing out a thought!
Because you are trying to incorporate two elements of tropical gardening, land and sea. Maybe a Ying and Yang concept for the design?

That's clever - sea on one side and garden on the other!

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

I love the undersea pics....John's pictures bring joy to my heart and enliven my spirit.

Now that being said, I don't want to overemphasize the underwater aspect. This is after all a gardening site....we all met through a love of gardening so I think that yes, the ocean should be represented, but not be the major focus. I hope I'm not sounding to dictatorial here, that is just MHO.

Celeste - thank you for your valuable input - you have certainly kept us from reinventing the wheel, and I was gonna ask eventually anyway.

Ying and yang is a great idea, as have been so many of the others....I think we first need to decide on the images to be used, then we can go with a design that best incorporates them. Ideas on how to accomplish this?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Indicative of the tropics?

Sweat?
Mosquitos?
Cockroaches?
Sand?
Coconut Palms?
Bird of Paradise?
Trade Wind Clouds?
Red Tailed (or white tailed) Tropic Bird?
?????
Later with more....

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

No matter how politically correct we try to be......John and Shari's pics are what brought us together......hard to disagree with that......Tropics under the sea.....

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Carol, now we cross posted.......obviously we are all passionate about the tropics....

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

LOLOLOL! Carol....ahhh come on....we are trying to promote the paradise part of the tropics....not the reality! Ha ha!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

OMG......go to iTunes and download everything you can that is Bro. IZ.......have I already said that......worth saying again and again and again.....ad infitium.......

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Christi - I love you dearly but TAKE THAT BACK! I have never been accused of being politically correct in my life, and I certainly don't intend to start now! I am incorrect and proud of it...don't want to homogenize my thinking or my speaking...love the differences and intend to keep it that way as long as possible.

Okay, ....I'm done now. ☺

Sweetie - have you ever listened to a group called Cusco? They are wonderful, and as soothing in a non-vocal way as is Iz...If you can't find them, I will bring you one of my favorites...I have everything they have done along with most of David Arkenstone....

completely OT....but such is us.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm with you,Shari.......just don't want to hurt someone's feelings but this is your and John's Tropical Gardens......the rest of us are just hangers on. Got it? Now I have insulted multiples and once again am in trouble.

John, are you going to stay in the shadows?

I am trouble. So sorry.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

You are not trouble....but please, it is not John and mine. Maybe the u/w threads are, but the rest is everyone's! And without all of us, this Forum would never have been created...so let's not forget that!

Columbia, MO(Zone 5b)

I really like the "by land or by sea DG is for me" Is it possible to split it and put "by land or...." on one side with a picture of a land based plant or plants and put "by sea, DG is for me" on the other side with pictures by shari/John on the other side? If admin is willing it would really be great if we could use the real DG logo.

West Bay, Cayman Islands(Zone 11)

I am in agreement here...I wont speak on anyone else's behalf, I had one aspect to add to the threads and I am a novice gardener...i know some about diving and u/w photography, i know far less about gardening and the plants with scientific names...i know what is in my garden and what stands up to hurricane force salt spray and what doesn't. the images that shari and i have posted are posted to spark learning and questions, and sharing our backyards as folks like tropicman and others share with us....hence the phrase, if you don't find me in the garden....brilliant! a perfect line for island living, and for the rest that take refuge in their hobbies.....copper wind chime thingy's, exotic recipes, foreign slang language...etc. this whole thing started out as folks that have special interests and issues with gardening in year 'round summer conditions....add salt spray, 100mph+ winds on occasion, plants that grow in our yard that folks in greenhouses struggle with....all this has made this forum what it is...discussion that has bonded friendships, educated, pissed folks off on occasion...i am the guilty one here.....but most of all...we have come together as family in this large community and i am most thankful for what we have accomplished to this point. all of us have something to offer here and we all share in the happiness brought forth.....my day would never be complete without seeing you kids out there...so many of you have made such a difference in my life on a day to day basis, that without it, life would be alot more difficult....Did any of you just feel a pat on the back????

anyway, let's be smart about this newest project....we live across the seas and have a tropical gardening roundup would take a large amount of money, and the decision on where to hold it would just create another thread of 300 posts....we need to include all of the aspects of what has brought us together in the first place. with everyone doing searches on other threads, it should not be that difficult to accomplish this project....i forsee in the future, all of the other forums follow suit, and then who can collect the most tshirts from all the different forums....

sorry kids, rambling on here but had to speak out the rattling in my brain....
j

West Bay, Cayman Islands(Zone 11)

what we can do is a split image....half of the image under, the topside half with a beach scene, with flowers, trees, sunset...etc.....i am saving an image for the end of year photo contest that might be just what we are looking for, but, no one will see it until it's voting time for pic of the year.....(i can shoot another!)

West Bay, Cayman Islands(Zone 11)

just imagine how hard for the games forum is going to be to design a shirt....HAH! that'll teach them to have first place in the number of posts each week.....

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

LOL. I never go to the games forum. Am too scared.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

John, you said it perfectly. Hugs and kisses!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

This has to be the greatest people on the planet. Thank you for including me.

LouC

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

After seeing what you have already posted, I am baffelled (sp?) by what you could possibly consider worthy of holding back! And now I am of course dying to see it!!! you shouldn't have mentioned it.,,, now I am going to bug you mercilessly! ha!

As far as the shirts go - there is no rush, so we are going to take our time and find the perfect pics - right? Land and sea, from Kansas to Australia we will somehow find something that represents the tropical state of mind.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

OMG, Shari......I just posted on another thread to Chrissy......tropicals are a state of mind.......there we go again....great minds,etc.....

West Bay, Cayman Islands(Zone 11)

patience....yes, i remember that...like waiting for a green flash.....i have seen 3 in 14 years. they say the best way to view a green flash sunset is thru the bottom of a heineken bottle.....

yes, we will devote necessary time to this project, make it right before we make a mistake!

thanks for all the input kids, we will try to include every aspect of tropical gardening in our design. might take a while, not too long, but an undertaking of this size and cost effectiveness, requires planning and research. tomorrow is another day and i will begin this quest with sincerity. good night kids, sweet dreams,

aurabest,
john

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

OHG.....this is getting just too much......just wished you night,night....sweet dreams on another thread as you were posting this......aaaahhhhh great minds......

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Your thoughts sound good to me, John. And like Shari, I'm dying to see that photo!

The green flash is special, isn't it?

Kathleen

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Incredibly special....I have seen it twice in my life, and consider myself lucky. Both times it was off the coast of Mexico....problem with islands is that clouds form over them - especially at sunset. So the green flash is very illusive. A mythology has arisen regarding the green - To see the flash in the ocean the color of the trees, makes you a friend to those trees and carries a responsibility for the ocean. Mayhap that is why I love the ocean so much, and my garden so much? Saw the flash long before I started gardening, but maybe the seed was planted. All I know is that once you see it, you never forget.
