It's beginning to look like the tropics..(Chapter 4)

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Hi Chrissy,
Sorry been busy finishing up the top cover of the greenhouse, the one between the house the sunroom, garage and wood workshop.
Was able to get some new photos today, after a minor setback, seems like one of my bananas Raja Puri decided it wanted to flower this late in the season, with a month of good weather to go,it would not be enough time for the fruit to even start to plump and begin the repining process,so I had to dig it up and pot it up,never tried this with banana beginning to flower,so I don't know what to expect,if it will continue the flowering process or die!!!!!

The middle leaf is the starting of the banana flowering process,it's about half the size of the normal leaf, then coming up in the middle of that leaf is the flag leaf, after that will be the flower.

That banana must have weighed 150 pounds easily, didn't have a big enough container,so I used a 35 gallon trash can,and for the baby a 5gallon pot.
When I dug it up and threw it over my shoulder the walk thru the jungle to the driveway must have been the longest and the hardest 100 ft,I think I ever had to walk, then lifting it high enough to get it in the trash can, legs almost buckled,I'll sleep like a baby tonite!!!LOL

The porcelain's vine I was telling you about, the birds are eating them as fast as they ripe, but when I was on the roof.I was able to see some at the very top of the vine, this shows the color stages they go thru before becoming the porcelain blue they finally get to.

You little ripper (means you are fantastic!)....wow you sure have been busy ....how cold is it?.....it must be so hard trying to beat the cold before it arrives.....good luck!
I have a beautiful very fragrant pink honeysuckle ...just about to bloom now ...I have the coral coloured and red tecoma trumpets.....the yellow one for some reason is considered a weed here and discouraged I don't know why perhaps it could be a poison issue
don't know for sure. The plum Hibiscus is just lovely....I have just spent hours hacking mine down (not the plum ...I don't have that ....but the peaches and cream grew through the winter (it is protected)...and was blocking the view.....also a lovely one that grew over two stories high....you have to be a bit ruthless with the triffid things or ithey would all eat the house......at the moment the wisteria has come out weeks early also all the fruit blossom... including my apricot that I grew from seed .......it gives yummy fruit if the rosellas down't chew the blossoms off... everything that was burn't off in the freeze has jumped back to life .....it is all systems go!!!! you would love the perfume I am wearing today LOL it is eau de Manure!
ha ha ha

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

I hope your wearing plenty for everyone to smell!!!LOL
Wife is wanting to get a rosella, very expensive here around $1600.00.

When are the pics coming???I don't want to miss the land of Oz springtime!!!

Any clue who deposited these eggs on the back of a red ensete banana leaf?

Thumbnail by Tropicman

Hold your horses ....TM LOL ...he was due last week but had a bug... coming this weekend.....I can hardly wait!
As usual loving those Elephant Ears! do they send up a fragrant thingy in the centre?.......I had one once that did but as I was new to this area I planted it in an exposed situation that got whacked by the frost and because it upset me so much I have never tried again but you have inspired me.You know those eggs on your banana...I would take them away just in case ...critters usually lay eggs on a future food sauce. The nut looks like an almond from here ....I don't know what a mature pecan looks like....or a mature walnut...whatever it is it will be ripe when it smiles opens unless it is a walnut....well you will know then cause it will look like one.Cool!

Hey the big man hits town tonight ...our City is in lockdown (minus the Police horses)....because of security.......whew it is a pretty big deal..... I hope it all goes well
we are not used to this kinda thing here....people are not too happy about being locked out of their own city.... but we know it has to be.

Clowns the left of me..... jokers to the right....here I am ....stuck in the middle .........

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Yes,I heard the big guy will be there in a couple hours,he's become very unpopular here in the states, not sure that anyone else is going to be much better,he's goning to leave it in a mess when he leaves office, that might take sometime to fix!!!

Yes the calla like lilly flower, does have a fragrance of pineapple to me,in the big ears ,I've yet to get any seeds from them.

I want you to meet my watch frog.he sings ribbit,if anyone enters the rain forest!!!LOL

Thumbnail by Tropicman

Now I am not falling for any critters you have in that garden of yours you caught me with the croc.....but it is cute whether breathing or not
Well the boss has arrived safely on a cold wet blustery night in Sydney....I hope everything goes OK........don't go straining yourself in that jungle of yours....take it easy!

Oh wow! I never know the name of anything I have. Just recognized I also have the lime EE. Third year after buying just one bulb it has multiplied to many. Divided last year and again this year. Will probably divide some for my neighbor later.

uuhh. wrong picture. that is hoja santa. smells like root beer. sure there is a more complicated name. It also has 3 little pups.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

try again.....ta.da.....lime EE....

Got this as a little bare stick last summer....didn't know until recently that it is a plumera.
Told you I am a novice.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

TM, I know that is NOT a pecan.....maybe a walnut. When it is ready, if the squirrells don't get it first, the outside covering will open and release the inside nut with the shell on it. Walnuts and pecans actually have two shells of a sort. Takes an ax to open the walnut.
And it turns your hands black. Walnuts covers and shells were used by Native Americans for dye.

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

LouC, that looks to be either Alocasia Macrohrizza (SP?) or potadora (sp?), or odora. Here's my lime zinger, the leaves are not shiny, more...not velvet...velour maybe...lol

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Well they are all EE to me and I love very one of them. I know I aggravate the real gardeners by not knowing what I have. Believe it or not, I have come a long way in the last 3 summers. Gradually learning but always thrilled with every single leaf. Thanks for trying to help me. There is hope.

Thumbnail by LouC
Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

I wish I could call myself a real gardener....lol....slowly learning latin here :)

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

My EE is right outside my window and I was comparing the veins with those of Tman's picture. Didn't think about texture being a part of description.

If you are not a real gardener then I don't know what is. You offer a lot of information and help. Appreciate you a lot.

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

lol, I've only been doing this a couple of years, since I'm all young and junk...lol. We bought this house 3 years ago and that's when I started! :)

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

since I'm all young and junk

Been a long time since I could say that......lol

Love all of those EE's..... going to get me some this weekend :)

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

LouC, I learned you really should love and appreciate youth while you can :)

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Amen.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Hey now gals your only as old as you feel!!!!LOL
And I didn't need that much help getting out of bed this morning ,once I was standing on my on two feet!!!! Just kidding,I was up and running at 4am!!!!

I believe Alocasia Mac,pordora has more and larger ripples on the leafs edge.

Chrissy that was a real bull frog!!!

And with all the critters you folks have,I could never fool you!!!

Like the outback, you best be looking up in the trees here as well, never know what you might run in to!!!!

TM, it looks like you have a black walnut. I went and picked a little stem off of one of mine and they look almost exactly alike.
