Can you believe it??? I never dreamed...and so soon, too! Wasn't it in April that you told me to just give up on it? LOL
Lucky Lowe's find
Makshi. My thoughts exactly.LOL I have alot of hoyas and have never seen a bloom yet in person!!.Brenda must have the hoya touch : )
Yep Amy..you have proven there IS life after death in your ability to bring momo back : ) Amazing!
Makshi I have Hoya Australis growing from seeds as I was fortunate enough to get a seed pod on a cutting I ordered from HI. They are still tiny little plants.
The Curtsii I found at HD and it does look like it has tiny little peduncles on it but they have never done a thing so we'll see if it ever blooms, but I love the leaves so I don't really care. LOL
I was able to get some cuttings from this big curtsii plant to root (took forever!) d-mail me if you'd like to give them a try too!
~Brenda
My goodness ladies.....................fabulous hoya plant leaves............don't even grow them but fun to look at...................
Rain, shame on you for not buying that big hoya in the basket that starts with an L.............they are so pretty in bloom..................
forgotten who showed the adenium picture, but I just remember that I have two adeniums blooming............had told Rain I would give all three to her as i was tired of the babies...........I lied, Rain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Two of the three have started to bloom and they are keepers for sure..............I wanted different colors than the ones we have for sale around here...............
Now i can't find the pictures......darn it..........and it is raining so hard I am sure the blooms are beat down!!!!!!!!!! One is bright red..........and another is white with all apricot inner and outer part of it.......
I have to go to Lowe's tomorrow, I'm out of Perlite and Vermiculite .... wonder if I can get out of there without looking at plants?? NAAAAH don't think so!
LOL Gail, that Hoya was too expensive for me! That one plant was more than all 4 of the ones I did get! Sure was pretty and yummy-smelling, though...
Maybe that third adenium will be all ugly and you'll want to get rid of it! ;o) LOL I just can't find them anywhere around here.
Good luck with that, Lin. They put it right there where you can't not look at the plants!
I can get you one real easy around here.........the hot pink and white one..........these I had special ordered from Buried Treasure and had given up on them....................
It is bad enough to buy them at the nursery..........it is insane to have you buy it and then i get to pay postage too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NO, gail..........that makes no sense............but that particular hoya does have a strong fragrance like some of the others............
The one Lin sent me was blooming when it arrived. The fragrance hit me as soon as I opened the bag it was in. Heaven!
I bought a Hoya when we were on vacation that was about to explode into bloom. I was so excited about it, but when it opened, though the flowers were very lovely, there was not even a hint of fragrance to them. What disappointment!
It's so funny to me that the plants people can't find in one place are the same plants that people in other places don't even notice anymore because they're so sick of seeing them. They'd sell a lot more if they would distribute them a bit more evenly.
My favorite Hoya so far is the Lacunosa because it smells heavenly! I have a few Hoya's - my Krimson Queen and Krimson Princess have bloomed but they don't have any fragrance that I can detect. I have had DS-70 and Brievialata bloom and to me the fragrance is not a pleasant one, not awful, just didn't smell very good, kinda musty. I have a compacta that bloomed a couple of months ago and I could not detect any fragrance on it either. I have a variegated Rope that has not yet bloomed, Obovata that has not bloomed, Curtisii that has not bloomed. And, a couple of others that I got in my first trade here on DG (from Nan) that I can't remember the names of but they have not bloomed either. I really like Hoya's. I wish I had more space on the front of my house (facing East) for all of them .... the ones out there seem to love that location! They get a lot of very bright light there all day, a bit of early morning sun but all day bright light.
Snow: LOL about plant collections! I never really thought about collecting .... but have ended up with a small jungle! Seems like they just "sneak" in sometimes!
I TOTALLY agree with you Amy .... I wish the nurseries/distributor's would spread them around more evenly!!
..... but, maybe they are encouraging us to go on a Road Trip?!
do you want to know how little about hoyas I know???????? I bought a basket in bloom the other day right here in Taft...............a day or two later, I looked down at the bloom and thought water was on it........wiped the bloom with my finger and put it to taste...........tasted like sugar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I know that is why they call them wax plants..........
thought you would enjoy me exposing my ignorance........................
Gail, there is soooo much about most plants that I don't know. May have known at one time, but as I age, I don't retain as much! :) I used to know the botanical name of every plant I owned and now I will stand and look at plants sometimes and can't even think of the common name!!!
hee hee .... now am I gonna have to taste one of my hoya blooms?
Lin, every time we go somewhere, I go to GoGardening and put in the zip codes along the way to see what nurseries will be close by! LOL
Gail, I read on the Hoya board somewhere that somebody spread that Hoya "honey" on a cracker and enjoyed it very much! :o)
Oh Amy .... I like your way of thinking!! Now, I gotta remember Gogardening for the next trip I make!
So .... Gail is not alone in tasting the hoya sap ... uh, honey!
Do remember, Lin, because a lot of the nurseries listed have reviews on them and you can read what other DGers think about them. That's a wonderful resource!
Thanks, Lin, on the run down of your hoyas and which are the good bloomers. I've been thinking about lacunosa and I do need to get one now for sure since both you and Rain mentioned the delightful fragrance. If you ever see one in your travels around especially if it's an EA one, would it be too much to ask if you would get it and ship it to me? I know it is an awful lot to ask so if you don't want to, I would understand perfectly. I would pay you right away of course. I have looked online for it but don't want a scrawny piece in a 2" pot if you know what I mean. I can't believe my nerve for asking you.
Bemedel - thanks for the link on those mini greenhouses.
Snow, I may be back at Lowe's tomorrow. If I am, would you like me to see if that one is still there and get it for you?
Snow: I will be glad to send you some rooted divisions of mine! And, I will be on the lookout for it too .... as good as it smells, I would love to have 5 or 6 of the Lacunosa! Will let you know what I find.
Oh wow, thank you both! Rain, IF you are going already, then sure go ahead and get it. If it's gone then boo hoo.
Lin. if Rain can't go or can't get it for some reason, then please be on the lookout for me, okay?
If you say you could have 5 or 6 of them, then it must be nice. And yes, you ARE a plant collector ;-)
Snow, I'll most likely be going. My husband has some errands to run tomorrow, one of which is Lowe's, and I usually tag along with him, just to look at the plants. If he has a hundred places to go and will be gone for hours on end, though, I might politely decline the invitation.
Lin, are you going tomorrow, too?
Rain, like I said, if you are going already and it's not too much extra trouble. If not, no problem. Don't give it a second thought.
It's no trouble at all, Snow! Honest! I'm thrilled to be able to do it for you, because I know what it's like to want something soooo bad and not be able to find it! :o) I'll let you know in the morning for sure whether or not I'm going, but I'm almost positive that I will.
Ooh, we're talking hoyas! :-) I have a couple of smallish ones now, hoping they'll get big and bloom eventually. I've been wanting H. lacunosa since I read the description on Rob's... that yummy fragrance just sounds irresistible! I've had bad luck though... twice I've been sent nice rooted cuttings, and twice that's been the only plant in the box that didn't survive! I'll try again sometime, and hopefully the third time will be a charm. There's another with a species name something like australis that's supposed to smell divine and also get really huge.... If I ever manage to get one of those going, the big basket of variegated wandering jew in the family room will just have to go live somewhere else, as that middle window seems like the best place for something that large.
Critter - this is a fun site to look through. This lady in Sweden has a huge hoya collection.

As well as the green australis, she also has a variegated form.

OK Rain, talk later...
Snow, I'm going with him today, so I will be at Lowe's. I've got a couple questions to be sure I get exactly what you want, so I'll dmail you. :o)
Isn't that her site wonderful? Someone posted it on the Hoya forum last year and Wow ... that lady sure Loves Hoya's .... what a collection!
I wish mine would bloom. They sure get enough attention that they should just fall all over their self blooming. Guess they are tingy.
makshi, don't feel bad. I've never had one to actually come into bloom while in my possession. The H. lacunosa Lin sent was blooming when it arrived, and the other one was blooming when I bought it. Neither has bloomed since. That's part of what I like so well about them, though, the challenge of figuring out what it is they want to be happy and bloom. :o)
If you find out the secret let me know.
I will, but don't wait on my suggestions! ;o)
A variegated H. australis... *swoon*
Thanks for sharing that site!
(I'm glad our discussions here aren't always and only about gessies!)
From what little I do know, some hoyas are seasonal bloomers and some can bloom year round. Some just might be stingy bloomers period. I'm thinking a fertilizer made weak (1/4 t. per gallon) like we do our violets that has a higher phosphorus (middle number) like 12-36-14 might be helpful.
Well Ladies .... I'm home. I went to Lowes as well as Home Depot. Lowes had one small variegated one, that's it. They had a lot of the EA hanging basket plants but everything here is ferns, ivy (lots of ivy!) and a few heart leaf philo's! That's it! Lowes plants looked healthy so I'm assuming they haven't been in store long. As for the plants at HD ... ick ... I would not buy them ... very dry and most looked half dead! What makes me so mad too is that the 8" EA hanging baskets at Lowes are $14.97, at HD $11.97 and at Wal-Mart $9.97!! Shows how they mark stuff up doesn't it?
Well, I am sure disappointed that I found no Hoya's, especially the Lacunosa ... I would love to have more of that one! Hope Amy and other's are luckier at finding them in their areas!
Here's one of my favorite Hoya's that I got from Nan in my very first trade here on DG, but I don't remember the name. I need to send her a photo to see if she can ID it for me! It hasn't bloomed yet
I have this Hoya that I bought a few months ago. It was just labeled as Hoya bella, Hoya "Stripes" ... but after seeing Snowrose's photo above I realize this is a H. 'curtisii'. I think I'm going to change it's location because it doesn't seem to be doing real well where it's been hanging, not enough light. The ones on the east side of the house just seem to love it ... the lipstick's seem to prefer that location too, so I might just have to try to hang more stuff out there ... I will have to ponder on a way to put up more hooks!
A $5.00 difference on the same size EA is quite a bit, huh? One of these days you'll run into some lacunosa but you never know when. Maybe that's part of the fun...the quest.
Lin, that hoya from Nan looks good and healthy.
Thanks Snow! Yeah, I bet next Spring when all the nurseries get stock for the new growing season I will be able to find it. I LOVE Springtime when they all get in new stuff! That's when I get the Plant Shopping Spree Frenzy!
Hoya curtisii does seem to be ok in the lower light, too much direct sun will make the leaves look pale and yellowish, washed out. You guys are lucky to have found such big pots of it, I have a small one that I have been growing from a 6" cutting for over a year now, and it does not grow fast!
I think Hoya lacunosa smells like hyacinth flowers you get at eastertime.
Here is my poor little slowpoke curtisii-
Oh Amy ... I think I really got Off Track and Off Topic here with my ramblings on Hoya's!
I wanted to ask you to keep me posted on your Annabelle and Isabelle! I have them both and for some reason they want to grow real tall instead of the normal shape of AV's. I'm wondering if it's something I am doing wrong. These plants have really long leaf stems! Here's a pic of one of them:
