Here they are again...
~ Cat
Action on the Pride of Barbados.
Good ones. I have only seen one Giant Swallowtail this year.
Oh yeah Cat! That sight looks familiar.. I get them all dancing up in the air in 3s and 4s. Real difficult to get good pics!
Weird you've only seen 1 Trois, I have raised several dozen and sent them away flying. The population has to be higher. Maybe you will see some more in the next few weeks.

Great pics Cat. Those are beauties, my fave BF I think. And look at all the seed pots on your plants. You are going to have a lot stored up. With my one measley seed pod I am kind of embarassed. And my plant has really not grown much. It is in full sun and has bloomed all summer but the plant itself has not grownmuch since I planted, or maybe I just don't notice because I see it everyday. I hope so. I want it to be good and strong and maybe come back next year. It is one of the more beautiful blooms in my garden. Though I have yet to see a BF on it.
Leslie
Most years I see a lot of GST, but those and Monarchs are very rare this year. Nothing is eating my Mexican Milkweeds. Maybe it was the hard freeze last winter that did in the locals.
Maybe tomorrow.
Didn't Scarlett O'hara say something like that?
Be well
: )
Frankly, I don't give a ------.
Being as well as I can.
How about you?
Still hanging in.
I have a problem. I used to check outside each morning to see if I was still on the green side of the grass.
We stripped our lawn down here and installed river gravel on an environmental fabric. (Saves water.)
Now I just can't tell.
: )
Show us a picture of you river gravel lawn, flyboy. I have an area where I would like to put river gravel, beside my driveway. Purdy please. : )
~Lucy
Thanks for the picture. : )
Don't they have some kind of river rocks that are different shades of brown? I don't know if white will work where I want it.
I am sure that they have many shades and sizes.
I'll get you a wider shot later today.
Enjoy
: )
Thanks, Flyboy. I like pictures. : )
What beautiful pictures!!
Thanks Flyboy, great pictures!
I can't wait to plant my POB, and start my seeds from Dad's garden.
WIB,
SingingWolf
WIB, SingingWolf, I'm so delighted to revisit the thread your dad has initiated, and the wonderful friends who are holding his memories dear.
Kim
The first one is still blooming, and the second one is budded.
But, now hear this, the first one has sent out a multitude of seed pods. They look just like those flat bean pods you see at the greensgrocer.
IF they grow to maturity, I'll send them all to SingingWolf, and she can spread them around.
I promise to take a photo of them tomorrow. Scout's honor.
Be well
: )
I have received the seed from flyboyFL. I added some POB seed I collected from Dad's garden in September, to make up a total of 16 packages containing 5 Pride of Barbados seeds each.
I would really like to give the seeds to the survivors of the Hurricanes we suffered through this past year, so they can rebuild their gardens.
I hope to have more seed to offer next year, as I like the idea of remembering my Dad in this way. Please let me know via this thread or by Dmail if you would like to start a POB in your garden.
Walk In Beauty!
SingingWolf
That is a sweet offer SW, and one I know he would have loved. You down on the coast....take her up on it!
Wonderful thought, gesture, S.W. Best wishes.
Kim
Spread the word! I want to find homes for these seeds. : )
The offer is open to anyone who survived the H.Caines, even if they don't live in Texas. I know that Louisiana got hit too!
Thank you all! (Especially flyboyFL).
WIB,
SW
It really is MY pleasure. I'll hopefully have more next season.
And Trois lives on !!
Be well
:)
Singing~
Were there any Agalinis seeds in the bunch?
It would be nice to have some of Trois' POB seeds too.
;-)
It IS wonderful.
I'll mail you some seeds if they continue to flourish.
Be well
SingingWolf - I would love to have some of your Dad's seed! Not sure if I qualify - I did not lose my garden; Gustav took our wharf and Ike put water in the yard - I lost some of my plants due to the salt water being on them, but nothing like when Ivan and Katrina visited. If you have enough after sharing with people who REALLY lost it all, I'd love to have some. Thanks.
Lucy
Lucy, I hope you'll get some. Some dear friends has shared some seeds with me, but I've yet germinated any this season.
Congrats FlyboyFL of your very first bloom on POB. Are they deciduous or herbacious there on your zone?
I've a different type of POB, the desert POB that has special meaning... It's a decious specimen tree here, and it's now setting out buds on our mild climate (zone 7b).
Lily~
Deciduous.
Bare bones during the winter (?) months.
Nothing but leaves, now. the early blooms came and went -- and I am waiting.
Be well
: )
Deciduous infers 'bare' to the stalks during winter, but retains its woodsy growth in previous years. Some like the Red Turk's Cap that I grow, they die down to the ground and resprouts in the spring = herbaceous. :-)
Lily~
I agree.
Deciduous.
Bare bones.
I recommend Eats, Shoots & Leaves, by Lynne Truss (LOL)
:)
Enjoy your POB, happy gardening FlyboyFL.
Thanks, Kim! In the meantime I will check garden centers, including Home Depot where several people seem to have found them in the past, to see if I can find one. I have giant swallowtails, and from reading this thread the POB seems to be one of their favorites. I'm all about increasing my butterfly/hummingbird population!
I also have the red turk's cap - it's a good one!
