Cat, great looking hedge. What zone are you in?
debnes, if you mean False Foxgloves, we have thousands of them. They just started to bloom about 10 days ago.

We are having a swarm of Sulphurs right now. Not much of anything else yet.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes trois, The one Buckeyes use as a larval host. I think I remmeber you posting about Buckeyes out there.

False Foxglove, Agalinis
I would love to plant a lot of that to replace some of the weeds. I am hoping to get some Plantain plants and seed to go with it too.

I will start looking for seeds. I have never noticed any so I am unsure.
It has rained everyday so I have had no chance to observe the butterflies lately.

Wow, that hedge is great! They are much bigger than I expected. Thanks Cat!

Shelia,

I would love to know more about your swap. It might be a nice day trip for me and hubby. I live in Buffalo, TX.

Great, we would love to have you and the DH!! Frostweed and MitchF are the organizers of the swap. It is in Arlington, I will Dmail you the links so I am not Hi-jacking Trois' thread.

I had a BST release the other day and set it on the POB to finish drying.. He stayed about 30m-1h until a paper wasp came hovering around. I swished a piece of fabric at them and they both flew off. But now the ST knows he could fly and he'll be ok.

The Gulf Fritillaries like it a lot.

Am in zone 9...the deep south tip of Texas...smack dab bordering Mexico.

I usually find Giant Swallowtails and Gulf Frits on the POBs I have in my yard but around town I often seen lots of sulphurs on them too.

I have a problem taking photos of all the butterflies that visit my POBs. It finally dawned on me that I have too many blooms, and the butterflies are quickly seeking the best one. They visit many for only a couple of seconds each.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Ok Trois, is that bragging or complaining??? LOL!!

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

Complaining. They are all stricken with the "grass is greener" thing.

Crossville, TN

This is my VERY favorite plant in the whole Southwest!! I've killed 5 ....so far....but I now have 2 in big pots...just waiting for me to get home and pick a spot for them.

My DGS that works for a landscaper gave them to me...and told me not to plant them until it cooled off a bit....that should happen about the same time I get back home.

I am High Desert and the Red Mexican BOP doesn't do as well in my area as they do in Tucson...so that is one reason to go to Tucson...to look at all the beauties blooming.

I'm REALLY going to try harder to get these to grow for me....the funny thing is....I sent seeds to The Dave one time...and they have grown and bloomed for him in both his last locations! No fair!! Jo

Abilene, TX(Zone 7b)

Debnes, why is that I have a POB and I am raising GF's and the two have not met up yet? Your picture is lovely and I would love for my babies to take advantage of my plant. I am extremely proud of the plant as I just happened to see it at a nursery and thought it was pretty so I bought it. And I have not been disappointed. Would love it to grow like Cat's though. Funny how you pick things up at a nursery because they are beautiful just to findout the BF's love them too or the hummers love them too. Of course that works out really well since that is what I am going for in the first place, plants that BF's and hummers love. But I really did not know of all the plants they loved until I found this forum. Thanks Dave. LOL.

Got the seeds from Canada a week ago, planted them, and covered the flat with cling wrap. This is what I finally put out in the sun today.

(The spindly things in the rear are tomatoes.)

This is a closeup.

I nicked the skin of half of the seeds to see whether it made a difference. The nicked ones came out twice as fast. (Very un-scientific,)

Well, it looks like you are on the way. When will you be back in Florida?

Longboat Key, FL

October 15th.

Hope I am still alive, when and if they bloom.

Meanwhile I'll still try Lowe's and Home Depot for "instant gratification," when I arrive there.

Be well

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

Our local Home Depot has a lot of them for sale, blooming right now.

Longboat Key, FL

What size (height and pot) -- and how much?

Longboat Key, FL

Four days later.

Note: The front row, where I nicked the seeds before planting, really has a head start. The second row seems alive and well. Time will tell

They all look good. Will they be in the ground soon?

Now -- I am old. How long must I wait for a blossom?

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

It should bloom next summer.

Longboat Key, FL

I promise to post a photo when it happens.

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

Great! I will be watching!

Abilene, TX(Zone 7b)

I have a seed pod on my POB right now. It is green at the moment. I am guessing I need to wait until it turns brown and then the seeds will be ready. Is that correct. My plant has not grown any that I can tell and have had it all summer but it has never quit blooming. I am wanting the seeds for it pretty badly. But I am not sure when to get the seeds off. Any help? Thanks guys.

Remove them and store them in a paper bag as soon as they turn light brown. Once they get dark brown, they will explode and scatter the seeds all around. In a few days you should hear what sounds like popcorn when they explode. Then remove the seeds and store them till spring.
They do most of their growing early spring and slow growth when blooming starts.

Were you telling the truth?

If so, where are the butterflies?

I have been under the weather for the last month or so, and have spent little time outside.
Most of the good butterfly pictures happen when the weather cools a bit. Right now they are all going at warp speed. I am not quick enough to do much.
I see a bunch of them out the window. I have too many flowering plants scattered all over, so there is no concentration.

Longboat Key, FL

No problem.

I meant, how come they don't recognize my POB's.

Be well

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Does anyone have extra POB seeds? I don't have but two trades to offer. I have pink hardy hibiscus and Lemon Slice Manihot.

Charlene

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

flyboyFL, yours are not blooming yet, are they?

Longboat Key, FL

OH, is that the dea?

They have to bloom BEFORE the butterflies come? NOW you tell me.

:)

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

LOL!

Longboat Key, FL

Aside from that, how are you feeling?

Be well

: )

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

Well, my nose is in good shape according to the Dr. No skin grafts needed.
Still a bit of a problem from the cold but recovering.

Longboat Key, FL

You're lucky -- and, drink lots of orange juice.

: )

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

I am doing a bit of that, and my Satsumas will be ready soon. I will stand in the yard and pig out on them daily for a few months.
:o)

Edinburg, TX

Took these photos a couple of weeks ago but had too much going on and and had to go out of town for a week...so am finally catching up. These are from the POB in my yard.

Three Giant Swallowtails enjoying the blooms...and each other.
