Another.

There were a bunch of Sulphurs also, but none would stop for more than a second.

Hey trois~

Nice photos.. But how's the weather. D'ya need a liferaft?

: )

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Beautiful! I can't wait until my plant gets big enough to bloom. I actually saw some at Wal-Mart this year but refrained since I have a baby of my own. It's so hard but gardening is really teaching me to be patient.

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

Thanks, flyboyFL. The weather is nice, for August. 89-90. Rains start again tomorrow.
Had a little c removed from my nose yesterday. I need a volunteer lawn mower right now. Two weeks of inaction ordered. That will be tough.

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

Thanks, konkreteblond. A POB should be blooming very soon. They don't wait long.

Manning, SC(Zone 8a)

Wish we'd get some of your rain, trois!!
I'd never heard of Pride of Barbados (we moved to SC last September, from a lifetime in CT), what a charming name! Your photo prompted me to look up more info on it, now I want to grow it!!!
Lovely photos!

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

Thanks, thea611. If you plant seeds indoors and put out after frost, you should be able to get blooms there. With heavy mulching, would likely come back from ground planting.

I just love those POBs, still waiting for mine to bloom, have you fertilized yours a lot?

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

None at all. That just gives growth instead of flowers.
They also like a lot of sun.

Edinburg, TX

The Giant Swallowtails are always on my POB. There is also a hedge made of them on a side road that I take to work when I want to take the scenic route. I usually see 50 to 60 GSTs flitting about them.

It was seeing that hedge a couple of years ago that made me get off my duff and purchase two POB for my backyard.

No fertilizing is my kind of plant! (I forget to do it) Mine probably won't bloom this year because it's really small.

Cat, do you have a pic of that hedge?!

Manning, SC(Zone 8a)

Wow, I really want to try growing this plant!!! I want a yard full of butterfly magnets!!

Edinburg, TX

Criminy! I've searched my photo files and can't find the photos I took a couple of years ago of that POB hedge. I haven't been back through there in several months but will try to make a point of it the next time I work the day shift and get off earlier enough to take new photos. Am sure it's in bloom as the ones in my yard are blooming at this time.

Here's a photo of a GST on mine.

Trois!
I sure hope the c doesn't leave a mark! Speedy recovery!
What nice pics of POB and GFrit! It's a late bloomer, but well worth the wait. Thank you vm for sharing.
Did you notice more species of butterflies this year, with all the rain?

Question on the POB. I bought one this year for the first time. Bought it around the first of July. It has had a bloom on it ever since. Amazing plant. I never remember seeing it before. My brother-in-law swears it is the prettiest thing in the whole yard and I have a bunch of flowers in the yard. Anyway so will it come back in my zone? I thought I read it should come back but if anyone knows for sure I would love to know. Mine has not grown much since I got it but it has stayed with one bloom the whole time. Still there, the bloom. Of course I have not noticed any BF's on it, but that is just me.

debnes_dfw_tx, the c removal left a crater. Will likely have skin graft in a month. They got it all though. Big relief there.

lostintexas, it will likely come back if you mulch heavy after the first frost. Cut it off near the ground. If the ground doesn't freeze, it will come back. Probably 6 or 8 inches of mulch for 2 or 3 feet around the plant will pull it through.

Mine start blooming in April and continue till November.
I have had several peeps tell me "that is the most beautiful plant I have ever seen."
I have given away thousands of seeds. Most report good results.

The entire plant is great looking.

Show us pictures of your POB, everybody that can. I have 3 small ones that I grew from seed. One is the red and yellow, and the other 2 are suppose to be the pink. I would like to see where you planted yours, so I can get some ideas. I got a few ideas from plant files. : )

Manning, SC(Zone 8a)

Good idea, Lucy! I'd love to see photos too........

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

Five POB pictures.
The first one is growing alone, full sun, no tall plants within 30 feet.
All the others are growing on the East side of a hedge of Yupon Holly, as close as 6 feet. I have one that is planted nest to the house and gets no sun except when it grew to 15 or more feet tall, and blooms on the roof. They seem to only bloom in the sun.

What can I say trois?!!! Gasp!
Save me some seeds, please sir? I'll remember to send you and envelope in a few weeks for when they are browned and ready, if that's alright.

Thank you for sharing all the pics!

The C. privit seeds you sent me last year to fruition>

I am happy to see the privit blooming. I had wondered about it.
I will be saving lots of seeds. I will let you know.
I have been pushing the POB for several years. There are many in NW Houston that I donated. They are so easy to grow I am surprised they are so few.

trois

Manning, SC(Zone 8a)

Wow.. Gasp is right. They are really striking, and the foliage is lovely!!! Are they strong enough to stand up to some wind, or do they need to be staked? I hope I can see them growing somewhere, I'd love to see them in person....

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

Wind no problem. The flowers last longer if somewhat calm.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I couldn't be patience like you Paige. I gave in and bought one that was at HD yesterday $15, for one about 2 1/2 foot tall.
Hope mine does well, kind of scary up here with our winters.
Anyone in my area have one? How did you protect it?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Sheila and Trois!
I found one at HD today too!! (Same size as yours Sheila.) It was 13.99... I snapped it right up.. :-). If kept in a pot in your shed Sheila it will make it, don't ya think? Might be alright in the ground on a southern wall with a lot of mulch & leaves might be alright too. I would like to try some of those hoops Mitch uses.

G whiz, I have lots to cover this year!!
;-)

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

They will come back if the ground doesn't freeze their roots.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Trois~
I think it's about 3 gal, pot.
Would 4" of snow hurt it if in the ground with a few inches of mulch on it?

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

Probably not. I will send you a few seeds so you can find out.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Aw, Trois, just come on up to our swap in October and bring a plant! LOL!

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

Maybe.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Yep Trois, You and your DW on my list of DGers that DH, I, and the kids would like to meet.. Bring anything, seeds or plants of TX natives , or just bring you and your DW.
Do you happen to have any Agalinis?

Edinburg, TX

Here's part of that POB hedge I mentioned in an earlier post. We were having a spot of rainy weather when I took this last week. Only sulphurs were nectaring on them.

This hedge runs the length of a trailer park lot.

Cat!
Those are gorgeous! This plant I got today is a beauty too. I sure hope I can keep it long enough for it to get nice sized. The foliage is so lacey, even without the eyepopping blooms. Almost as soon as I set it down .there were visitors.

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

Nice picture, Cat. I like seeing pictures of the whole plant, in it's growing enviroment. : )
~Lucy

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Heard dat Lucy! I love the rugged terrain, and all the beautiful natives out there where Cat lives. ~sigh~
I will post some pics of my new one with some action when I get some good ones.

;-)
