Jimmy Nardello peppers were picked and eaten tonight. Terrific fried in olive oil with onions and Italian sausage. Been a carefree plant. Have 18 in earthboxes and 12 in the dirt. No problems with pests or disease. Neglected watering them a few times and they perk right back up. Still blooming and setting peppers too. The yield from the Earthboxes is better than in the dirt but that could be because they went in earlier and have more sun (I forgot the end of the garden the peppers are in gets full sun from only until the first week in August...as the inclination of the sun declines, shade from maple trees creeps over into the garden)
Veggies 3 (and other Edibles!)
They look great - and yummy! Peppers, onions and sausage - what a combo.
Sounds good to me!
Thanks for brainstorming the thumping and patching with me, Pirl and CapeC! I'll check on the bottoms tomorrow. I was thinking the vines should die first, but I think I'll do the patch test and just cut one open. That strange pumpkin of mine just keeps getting bigger and still has no ribs. It is turning a bit oranger now........quite a mysterious type! I'll use it to decorate the front door of the farmhouse.......
David - those peppers are gorgeous! They would be nice to use in making some vinegars! That is so easy to do, and my favorites have some long red peppers in them, along with some garlic and various herbs. Yummy!
Here's a pic of that pumpkin a week ago, along with one of the smaller honeydews....
I love making vinegar with the hot pepper and garlic. Good rainy day project.
I agree, Pirl........so easy and they make nice little gifts too!
Eek - that pumpkin shot reveals just how weedy that part of my garden is! Heavens....those are the blasted gallant soldier weeds - now in the 4th generation this summer! My sciatic nerve is killing me, thanks to those little flowery devils! I have pulled literally thousands, and they are still going crazy in the sunflowers and around the pumpkin vine. Mercy!! I said "Uncle" awhile ago....and it shows!! LOL
Night all........got a new book to go read to make my lids flutter!
DonnieBrook...would sweet Italian red peppers work well in vinegar? . Jimmy Nardello's have a very sweet flavor and very thin skins (which is good for frying--doesn't take long). I'll try it as it would be nice to have some around at Christmas.
I think they would give the vinegar a nice flavor, David.....Let us know what you think after you make some. I've generally used the red hot peppers, and I would have to remove the peppers after a bit, but I would think the sweet peppers would work well.
The red pepper and a sprig of thyme and rosemary in the vinegar would make a nice Christmas season gift. I buy very inexpensive small print cotton fabric of colors or seasonal prints that go with the herbs, make a "cap" for the bottle by cutting a circle of the fabric and tie it around the top of the bottle before I give it to someone. If you keep the fabric short enough to just cover the "neck" of the bottle, the colorful part of the herbs or peppers look nice with the fabric. You can find a lot of very inexpensive holiday fabrics at Target or WalMart. I think the key is to find very small prints. So easy! I save all of my glass salad dressing bottles & soak off the labels to reuse for my vinegars after they are sterilized. Fun and easy! As Pirl said, a nice rainy day project in the fall before the herbs are gone.
Goo Gone is great for removing stubborn labels on glass or plastic.
Good point, Pirl! I often tell my DH that together he and I make a half-way decent person. LOL....Well, together you and I make a half-way decent herbed vinegar post.....LOL I guess I always did like teamwork. That Goo Gone is the berries!
I like Peppers, Rosemary and Thyme in my Goo Gone.
Victor!
You would, Victor.....Just wait 'til you receive a holiday box from a surprise sender......some tasty Goo Gone in a fancy bottle with orange marigolds, baby MGs, red peppers to clash with the orange and a little pink chive blossom to make up for the rest of it. You'll love it! And it will have some holiday fabric of little deer munching on the gardens in front of the Big C house.......
LOL
......... and it will attract bees.
Now I'm counting on it!
Gulp!
I think it's Bee Pollen (the nutrient sold in vitamin shops) that we're supposed to gulp.
True, Pirl.......and Victor is just bluffing his bravado anyway.....aren't you Victor? I was rolling on the floor with laughter last night when I read the Fall CT RU sticky for the first time. The prison inmate banter was just too much....How I wish I could join you all for the RU. I have guests coming that day from out of state. If they cancel at the last minute, I'll just zip on down and pretend my sign up post got lost in cyberspace........not really, my southern mother would scream down from heaven if I were so ill-mannered....LOL
Somber, Schick! I hearya!!
My Paw Paw should be ripe soon!
Good good!
snicker! :)
Oh MY, Schick!! What did you can?? You must be a bit tired......but greatly satisfied....tonight.
Paw Paw are yummy yummy!
Realized today that I forgot to sow my greens for Fall in my veggie box! Guess I can still do it in a container and bring it in when it gets too cold.
They might be the crop that gets sweetened by a frost. Something does but my memory bank is empty.
They're cute Cat. I get sweeter after a frost. Much grouchier in the Summer!
I thought carrots and parsnips get sweetened by frost.
and brussel sprouts...sorry Harper!
Looks great. Where's your hand?!!
I couldn't bend over that far! Back is seriously sore!
Join the club!
I don't want to!
