voting booth suggestion

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 4a)

I am not sure if this is the right place for this, but I have a suggestion for a Voting Booth topic. That topic is, for those of us with rather extensive plant collections, what do we plan to do to with the collection when we are no longer able to take care of them, due to illness or death, or moving, etc.? This is not an imminent question for me to answer, but one I have pondered, because I would hate to see it all wind up in a dumpster.

That is a good question - thanks!

If you have put in place a Durable Power of Attorney to handle your affairs if you can no longer do so, that would be a good place to put instructions (perhaps as an addendum) about your plant collections. You can also put your wishes into your will and request that the executor follow your instructions to the best of his/her ability, considering the time and possible expense involved. Another option would be to leave the collections to a local organization, perhaps a church or shelter, who would put them to good use.

I like that poll question too.

Part of what triggered this thought is that a few years ago, a friend invited me to a sale of an extensive orchid collection, included awarded plants, where the elderly and infirm owner was moving. I bought a few plants, but it was a very sad event, because the owner had been unable to properly care for his plants for years, and members of the local orchid society had volunteered to re-pot plants to make them saleable. Many of the plants were beyond saving or were dead. It struck me that it would have been better to have done this dispersal earlier, but I suppose it is human nature to think that one's health will get better. But I logged this as something to consider when, inevitably, I can no longer properly care for my collection.

I have made arrangements for my heirloom vegetable seeds to be donated to Seed Saver's Exchange.
