What's Blooming Today? #11

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Hi Boojum!
Your indoor plant collections sounds like mine. I have 3 hibiscus (one is a tree - still figuring out where that will go), 2 mandevilla, 2 passionflower, 2 jasmine, 2 variagated lemon trees and an orange tree and assorted tender herbs that will go inside once it gets cold. However, the windowsill inside is already occupied by cacti, succulents and orchids...
I've purchased a plant shelf (50% off at linens n' things) to help with the load. Now I have to figure out the lighting situation.
So far the plants have really enjoyed being outside. The passionflower vines have grown up the front step railing and are starting to grow across the lintel....
:)

Hi Pixie,
We loved the cooler weather back in Framingham. Andrew was full of energy and it was nice to sleep with windows open. We are back in Maine for the weekend heat wave - this is the last weekend for a while, so we are making the best of it. The ocean is a little cold, but the huge waves make up for it!

Sleep?....what is that?
SO TIRED. Had a VERY FULL day yesterday at 6 Flags in MA which is a 3 hour ride each way.
Some very beautiful shots and lots to catch up on this morning.
I LOVE everyones Verbena pictures. Had never heard of Verbena until this year but it is certainly on the "someday" list now :)
For some reason, I have tried planting tall phlox 2 different times, 2 different cultivars and for some reason they just don't get to the point of blooming in my garden. I see them in other people's gardens around town so I'm not quite sure what I am doing wrong with them. The only thing I can think of is I did try both cultivars in the same garden, in the same spot and maybe it's too acidic where they are. Maybe I should move them but I have never had good luck transplanting them. Does anyone happen to have advice as to what I may be doing wrong with them? They are pretty much in a full sun/partial shade part of the day bed and creeping phlox seems to thrive fine so it really baffles me.

Looking outside and around the house I'm wondering where all the houseplants are going to go this fall (which is right around the corner). I collect Oxalis, Crown of Thorns, Hoya, have a few lipstick plants, Goldfish Plants and Epi's. This year I also have to make room for a Plumie and of course my HUGE Pink Princess. I also have to dig up 4 clumps of Japanese Foxglove as they won't winter over outside and find a place for them inside too. I'm thinking I may just plant them in the Plumie pot and wish for the best. Not quite sure what I'm going to do yet, I have already brought a few to work as it is *lol* Some of my houseplants have almost doubled in size out there this year so it really is going to be a dilemma. I think sometimes that I will have to part with some but when it comes to making a list of the ones I can part with I make the list and then cross everything off *lol*

More great pics, love those single hollyhocks hope mine come back and bloom next year. A lot of them got biffed this past winter but I have some seedlings growing. The doggies are very cute and look like they enjoy having their pic taken.
Maria Rehob is so big, are you near the Attleboro line, Taunton, Swansea or R.I. border?

Here are a few things from this morning. It is really muggy out there already. Icky.

ngam, you are right, Rehoboth is huge in area, once it included parts of Seekonk, Ea. Prov., Swansea and if I am not mistaken part of Attleboro. Did you know at one time it was considered to be the capital of MA? Boston it was because of its Harbor am I ever glad, lol, like living in a farming town though lots of mega houses have been built on land farmers have sold :-((
I live near the village center where the Cong. church is,off route 44, so I hope you will take a ride to see me.

Tamberlin, just love your big retriever babies, I have one too. Here is a picture of him, taken last winter

Kim, about Phlox. I have very acid soil too not to mention clay hard as a rock I think they do not like that. I dug down about a foot, should say had it done, and amended with compost and good garden soil for good drainage, what ever I plant in there now grows just wonderful including the Phlox that does not grow as profusely in an other area where soil needs amending.

I am a great fan of golden retrievers, for personality and looks.... Andrew is a good gardening buddy. He sits by and just lets me dig holes. Ben, the younger one (and my mom's puppy) , tries to get in the holes, which is tough when its time to put the plant in!

Maria you are right about the building up, it is even worse here. At least Rehob requires a large lot. It is a very pretty town. The largest in area in the state still. I'm trying to figure out where you are, near where 118 meets 44? Some of the back roads wind around forever past pretty farms and some huge homes, makes a nice sunday drive but it is easy to get lost. You also have a great DL nursery over there. I don't get to leave very often, have my 94 year old mom to take care of right now, but every once in a while I get to bug out for a little bit. All the doggies are really pretty.

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Well Maria, your advice really has helped me to decide that I need to move the phlox. I think the spot I have them in is too acidic (actually under a tall pine tree). I think I will move them to the new garden which has been amended with horse manure and add a little lime to the planting area when I move them. Think I will do that today in fact :) So hot out there, keep coming in for breaks and quick, cool showers....well back out to move the phlox :)
Thank you.

Allison:

Your coral bells aren't blooming either? Ours haven't, and don't even look like they will anytime soon.

Great photos everyone! I enjoyed wishing for each and every one of them!!

Thanks for the phlox tip, too!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Thanks.
Pirl - It likes to flower way down in the plant. I try to disbud those way inside that you'll never see.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Hey Victor - I am still working on your single dahlias for you. Here are some more:

I did try to scare up some pics for you here
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/761157/
not overly popular since they are just average as cut flowers.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Nice Al -

I went to the nursery for a bit - too hot/humid for any real gardening. Got a Casablanca Lily 50% off [3 stalks] and an almost black Hollyhock for 50% as well. I'll plant them tomorrow am. I hope they come up well next year.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

ngam, yes stay on 118 , it will be quite a few miles to 44, just cross as I said before, from there it is not far to find me as I said.

Thinking perhaps we need a new thread

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks Al. That Firepot one is nice. I'm starting to get won over, though I still would prefer singles. Disbud's for you, buddy!

Anita, congrats on the new plant mover!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Al - love that Firepot too. Like Victor, you guys are making me think about some dahlias next spring....just a few maybe and I won't be doing an excess of digging next fall.

Tamberlin - that beach sunrise shot was gorgeous!

Anita - nice car!! Enjoy!!

Victor and Celeste - I discovered that my DH's camera DOES have a macro feature. I've been trying to use it, but I got too close to my turtlehead and it blurred. This one was a bit better.....but it's not a good close-up....

Tamberlin and Maria - Your goldens are wonderful! I still miss our Cody....he loved "pea-picking" over the fence in my garden. Snow peas were his favorite. We lost him at 15, and I'm still not over it!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Louise, with the macro setting on, you should be within a few inches of the subject.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Congratulations on your plant mover, Anita. It's lovely.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks guys.
Louise, I like the monarch hiding under the butterfly bloom. Victor, I like the singles too. I grew them from seed one year. They didn't grow well from the tubers the following year. I think I'll try seed again next year.
