Custom Menu 1.0 is now ready

My first version of the Custom Menu is now ready for you to start playing with.

Click on My Tools - Preferences - Customize HomePage

Find "Custom Menu" and make sure it's enabled (preferably in Column 2, close to the top)

Save that page.

Then go to "Custom Menu"

Every main feature of DG is then shown to you, all of which are disabled. Click "Enable" next to the ones that you want to have quick and easy access to on the homepage.

Once that's all done, go to the homepage and you should see your custom box with all the links you selected therein.

Currently it only supports links. I plan to soon include extra features like search boxes, etc. If anyone has any other additions to request, please let me know!

Ahhhh, I'm already missing my search boxes Dave :(

I plan to soon include extra features like search boxes, etc.

Now that was easy!! I like it!! Thanks

Works like a charm!

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

Something must be wrong I cannot find the "make my plants grow faster" button.

Ok, just kiddin'.

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

Good one Dyson!!

Necedah, WI(Zone 4b)

Looks like the design on the navigation box changed, too. Very clean and crisp looking- easy to read, and smaller. It looks great!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I have to admit, the changes and improvements did grow on me and I now know they were the right thing to do. It just took me a day to adjust.

That's why it Dave's Garden and not Nap's Garden.

Well, Dave, I followed your directions above to put back everything that was now missing in my Custom Menu. I believe I followed all of your directions correctly. There was one anomaly: Where you stated that all of the Custom Menu items were disabled, I found them all enabled (even though none of them had shown up on my Home Page).

So I went through the Custom Menu and disabled everything I DIDN'T want. Then I logged out and logged back in. Guess what? Everything I disabled is in my Custom Menu, and everything I enabled is NOT there. I looked again at my Custom Menu anbd found red Xs in the Status column next to the "Enable" in the Actions column. I found green stars in the Status column next to the "Disable" in the Actions column. It seems to be working backwards. What am I missing?

Thanks for all of your help.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

If it has a red "x" and the word "enable" that means it is disabled, and you should click "enable" to activate it.

Vice-versa: those that are enabled will have a green star, but the word "disable" next to them is a link to disable them ;o)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Got mine to work too. Thanks Dave.

When you mention search boxes are you including the PlantFile search options, Dave?

I would love to be able to get to the "Specific Search" in one click from this site. Also if it could open down on the page right at the beginning of the box, it would save me from scrolling down each time.

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php

Right now I have it linked to my favorite places on AOL so I can get to it in one click but often I am not on AOL when I am posting photos in PlantFiles esp if I have a lot of them to post and want to go fast.
Thank you

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

Thanks, Terry! That's a really good example of fuzzy logic. I still can't wrap my head around it, but I can fix it.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Dave, I'm re-arranging the items on my home page.

Is there any real reason why we have to have a huge long list of all the birthdays of NON-subscribers? It takes an awful lot of space on the page and makes us have to scroll to see anything below it. OTOH, I really like having the list of birthdays of those whom I've gotten to know in forums.

Ann

Ann,

That's a good idea. I changed the list to only show subscribers. Let's see if anyone else notices and complains. :)

Wow! That was fast. I haven't even finished getting things the way I want them. :-)
You're GREAT, Dave. Thanks.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I've got the Custom Menu enabled and it works well. Thanks.

Thanks so much for removing the L O N G list of non-subs birthdays. While it's nice to recognize them, it's also nice to have a shorter list!!

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

My thanks too for removing the non-subscriber birthdays. It took up a lot of room that can be used better. If they want their birthday listed, let them cough up the $20 annual fee.

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

Most Cool! as always, good things.

Jasper Co., MO(Zone 6b)

I watch DG's videos which it's so good to see "how to" I watch it all of your DG's program videos.

Sure it need some oil on creaky noise on your metal compost bin turning thing! lol...

Program is good to see clearly...

It's on top of the web homepage "Guides & Information" click on videos... scroll down little bit and see Video Library.

I was just thinking about that birthday list today and poof! Thanks for mentioning it, ViolaAnn, and thanks to Dave for the quick action!

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

I suppose this is the correct place to ask. Before, I could go to the list and add or subtract the forums I wanted to watch but now it appears that is changed. The little heading stated I was "watching" 103 forums presently. Can someone tell me how to add or subtract forums from the list that comes up when I click on Home. Thank you.

Hooks, TX

balvenie,
On the Home page, click on 'Communities'. Then click on 'Discussion Groups'. They are all listed and you can pick and choose from the complete list as to which ones show up on your home page.
Hope this helps,

Louise

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

balvenie, you can still do it like you always did from your home page click on my info and go to preferences. It's still the same it just looks different. Down the side you will see forums click on that and you can mark whatever ones you want. Just make sure you hit submit when you are finished.

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Gotcha ! I did it as explained and it was easy. Thank you for your help.
