Yes and potatoes too, I think. Years ago there was also a theory that avoiding eating these would help arthritis.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Really? I heard that about oranges and arthritis.

Okay, so here's what I shouldn't put in the compost: tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, squash, eggplant or peppers. Anything else?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I don't think Zukes and Squash are.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Arlene says they do. You two wanna discuss this?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Zukes are part of the Squash and Pumpkin family - Cucurbitaceae. The nightshade family is the Potato or Solanaceae family.

Tomatoes are in the nightshade family along with peppers, eggplants - right?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes. Along with tobacco and petunia!!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Oh no!!!!! I threw my petunias in the compost heap.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

wow I didn't realize that tobacco and petunia fell in with that lot!

Takes all kinds in families - even in the plant world.

chuckle...

How did we get to night shades in the thread on Pirl's party? Actually, I don't think I want to know!! (Didn't realize petunias were night shades, so I guess I learned something new) Eleanor

Beautiful place you have pirl, you will think my counters are a clutter, love to cook in my very small kitchen, am too old to crawl around to lift mixers and other appliances I use most every day hidden some where in a cubbard

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Maria - you can't see it in this photo but at the left end there's a good amount of hidden counter space and I do have the blender, toaster oven and the mandoline stay there, hidden from public view but accessible.

That is a good way to keep them out of view, I would love to have such a spot, everything neat without clutter which I would prefer in my little kitchen

Do you play the mandoline, Pirl?? While cooking?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

No. My daughter is the music expert and plays 12 instruments and teaches music, too.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow! Impressive. Wish I learned a musical instrument.

Ah, Victor - some of us a destined to be patrons of the arts - not the artists.

Reminds me of the story about the little girl who didn't get the part in the school play that she had wanted. The child's mother was upset for her but the child say: They chose me to clap!

I can be patronizing.
