DG Business cards

Has anyone tried to print the cards from "Extras"? The first two I tried downloading, and got this message: "Paint cannot read this file. This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not currently supported." Paint was the default program for opening it. The third one downloaded, but the cards were not separated in the right place--they were separated in the middle of a line of text.

I would love to have had one to give to a lady I talked with today in line at a garden dept.

The first two are in Microsoft Publisher format, so Paint wouldn't be able to open them, not sure why it thought it should be the default program. The third one is in Word, if the breaks aren't in the right place you're probably using a slightly different size card than what it was set up for, try playing with the settings in the document and you may be able to get it right (either that or figure out what size cards it's meant to work with and go buy some of those).

Could it be my ancient computer? I got it in 2000, which makes it old in computer years...it has Microsoft Works instead of Word... I didn't even load any cards in the printer yet--it just downloaded all funky-looking. Oh, well...thanks for the input, ecrane3!

I would try opening it in Word instead then if you can find a computer that has it, I did that and it looks fine. Could be Works has trouble opening Word files exactly with all the formatting that's supposed to be there. I thought the problem was when you printed them the cards didn't line up where they were supposed to.

The other thing you could try is a couple options up from the cards there's one where you can download the DG logo to make your own things, maybe you could download one of those and make your own business cards with MS Works.

Thanks, good idea. I will ask to borrow my sister's much newer computer. 'Preciate the help!

A newer computer might not help if all she has is MS Works, it may still not translate correctly from Word. Most computers (PC's at least!) come with Works already installed, but you have to pay extra if you want Word, so unless she had a good reason for wanting better word processing chances are all she has is Works too. Still doesn't hurt to try though just in case a newer version of Works can figure out Word files better.

I wonder if the new Google document software would open it?

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

Wow, I guess I just assumed new computers came with Word! Figures, they want you to pay for the software separately. We have it at school, but there is a block on downloading anything, because some students were taking advantage and slowing down the computers too much.

KyWoods - download the template onto a diskette or CD or memory stick and then use it on the school computer from your saved file - gets around the "download" issue.

As you can't download it on your computor, maybe one of us can email whichever file you want to you at school?

I didn't think of that, Yankee--didn't occur to me that it would make a difference, but I'm still learning! Thanks, I'll try it. Grammy, yes, someone is going to try that, too. What a great bunch of folks--DG renews my faith in humans. I'll keep you all posted on what works. I appreciate everyone's help!

(I teach MS Office at a local Community College) The problem with allowing downloads from the internet is all the spam and viruses that can come in and damage, distroy or reconfigure the student computers. I learned not to use the software that allowed me to take one students computer and show it on the screen for everyone to see when I tried it and a lesbian chatroom advertisement popped-up for all the students to see. Color me red!
Before the school controlled downloads - I have heard that there were "new" screensavers on PCs that would make Hugh Heiffner blush! Reading a file from a media disk is much different than a "download" to the PC. I think it will work for you.

Ohhhhh, so that's why they do that....I shoulda figured that. LOL, Yankee, what a memorable experience!
