I MISS THE GOOD OLD DAYS when our families all lived close to each other. When we would all get togeather every Sunday for a family get togeather. When we would put on our best clothes for church and dare not get them dirty for the entire day but be allowed to change into our play clothes after having dinner with the family. We had a large apartment in Brooklyn NY back in the forties and as such it was the gathering place for our families. None of which lived less than five miles away. Most were in "yelling out the window" distance away as we did not have telephones at the time. I was very young then only about seven or eight but I long for those days again. Unfortuneately, for me, those days are gone forever but at least I was there to enjoy.
Tell me what you miss most?

Bettypauze -- Yeah! That was beautiful...
I miss my Grandmother. She has been gone for 27 years now and had a very long life, but I miss her input in my ideas for crafts and influence in everyday life.
I do not grieve, I just keep her living on in my heart and smile every day when I think of her.
I miss quiet Sundays! In my young years, growing up in a small western Canadian city Sundays were days when all the stores were closed, the movie theatres were closed, pretty well everybody went to church at least once and sometimes twice a day. Sunday afternoons were times to pack a picnic and go to the park with all the family. Sunday evenings were family dinners.
Now I live in a large western Canadian city. All the stores are open on Sundays , construction is allowed within established residential areas from 9am to 6pm ( and there is a huge housing boom here and a shortage of workers so it does happen)
people are outside on their decks or in their hottubs with music cranked up and driving cars with music cranked ( of course this is an everyday occurance!) neighbors are cutting their lawns ( and also edging their lawns and blowing the debris too).etc. etc.
Please couldn't we just have one day a week that is quiet?
Well said. I agree.
It all started with the elimination of the the "Blue Laws" in our country back in the early sixties which allowed all department stores and malls to be open on Sundays. Six days a week weren't enough for the money hungry vultures. This was the end of family days as certain people chose the mall instead of family get to geathers. Prior to this only restaurants and entertainment centers were allowed to conduct business on Sundays thus making it a fun day. Now it is just another day! (sigh)
Yes I remember they were called Blue Laws up here too.
The other thing I dislike that is related is how all the stores etc are open pretty much every day of the year except - maybe - Christmas! Stores were never open on New Years Day or Good Friday or Easter Sunday and on Remembrance Day (Nov 11 here) the stores never opening until after noon and the ceremonies were finished.
There are several thinsg I miss, but I think the one I mis s the most is plain ole good hearted neighborness and the time when you could actually have a conversation with a person.
I am all for technology. Computers are the best for learning and finding information, but I sorta wish they hadn't invente d the cell phone. And no I don't use one. I still hunt for two quaters in my purse and a pay phone if I need to make call away from home.
Maybe cell phones wouldn't be so bad if people practiced common curtisy and good old fashioned manners. I think it is very rud e to be greeting someone or in a conversation with someone and you hear " hold on I need to take this" , shoot some folks don't even say anything, as soon as that ringer or whatevre goe s of f they grabbing that phone like it is a gonna be the end of their lif e if they don't take it, start chatting away and it is like nobody else exists. Not the person they was talking to or the or persons aroudn them. Then when they finish their call they try and act like nothign happened and try and get back in the conversation.
In the old days , people still managed to call each other and comunicate and have nice conversations and , people actually listened to each other and discussed stuff.
I'm not totally against cell phone s per say, just against the rudenes s in using them.
Besides, it was always fun to have a bunch of friends and phone booths on street corners and try and se e how many of yourselves you could stuf f in one and still shut the door. : )
"Ban takes the worry out of being close!"
Remember that one? Back in the very early sixties my brothers and I used to stuff ourselves into the phone booth at the park on our way to school and yell that line from the Ban commercials - everyday - we never tired of it. We had fun all the time. Now we rarely see each other or talk. I miss them and I miss the fun we have when we're together.
Now that I think about it, I miss that spirit we had as children that creates fun everywhere you go. I think I'll try to keep that in mind, have more fun.
