CALIFORNIA...Online court records website?

Hello all,

Recently I found an online court records site for Oklahoma.
This is all fun and dandy, but the information I believe I am
after is in California. By the way, I had a heyday looking up
what former spouses have done. :-o

I've searched Google and seem to be having trouble coming
up with a free site, one which is a matter of public record that
will list a person's 'rap sheet' so to speak.

By chance could anyone suggest a free court records site for
California?

Also, on the mention on pay sites, a friend is in need of such a service,
but we're having difficulty choosing from all the sites which promise
the most extensive return of information. As I am helping this person, he
is willing to pay for the records, but I don't want to waste his money on
something which could be acquired via public records.

Please note we are not using this for illegal purposes. They are public records,
but since we do not live in California, the internet would be the best route.
