'tis the season

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Sorry, acquired another grandson to live with us temporarily (younger brother of the one already here, and father of the sweet baby). I should write a book. See if I'm worrying about John and Kate.....takes my mind off my own household....more than I should have told.

Since we are technically "retired" people either time should be just about right.....or we could come Friday so we are already in the city and stick around until Wednesday and.....well, you see the possibilities.

Tell all if you want...we're all family here.

Just talked to my Mom in Brownsville. As of an hour ago the projections looked like it was going to head into Mexico, though one computer still has it going to Mississippi. I just made her promise they wouldn't wait too long to get out. Stuff can be replaced, people can't.

Anyone else have any updates?

John, Katie.....what can we send that you might need the most?

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

Last I heard was about an hour ago and it was still Texas.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

I just checked the Caribbean Hurrican Watch site and John hasn't posted anything there in a while either. Maybe power is down already. That makes sense. No power, no electrical fires. So if they are in the dark, and cuddled up.....hmmm maybe we shouldn't be bothering the love-birds with our questions....

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Updated Storm2K page. Man oh Man these guys can talk about hurricanes like you wouldn't believe. I'm learning a lot as tis storm heads toward the US.

I've been watching this site most of the day. There have been some updates from folks from different islands, etc. throughout the afternoon.

Still praying for those in Dean's path.

BTW, I forgot to mention that my future son in law works for Walmart. In the 15 years or so that our walmart has been opened, I've never seen all of the checkouts opened simultaneously. Even at Christmas. He said last night that every available checkout was open and there were still lines at Midnight! He said they were quickly running out of things like Vienna Sausage, etc.

I dropped him off at work today and there were cars all the way to the main road. I warred in my mind about going in there to stock up on water and canned goods. I decided I'd rather pay a bit more and get them at my local grocery store. At the store there was very few cars in the parking lot and the store was well stocked! I've parked these canned goods and the 5 cases of water in case hubby needs them. I won't be here to use them. The things I bought were things we'd use anyway. No lines and no waiting!

God is Good to those that help themselves!

Janet how close to the water are you guys? The Storm2K site is fascinating, but they seem to spend so much time admiring the storm, and not much time actually giving information...I have to bounce between the two sites.

Be safe friend Janet!

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

Janet, you see the latest images on there? Wow!

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks Shari!

We are about 45 minutes from Galveston. I'm about 15 minutes from Port Arthur/ Sabine Pass though.

I know what you mean about them admiring the storm. They do keep a **very close eye** on it though and some of them have been there a while.

Dean has gotten HUGE! Last I read it was 550 miles across. That's one BIG storm!!!

Many hugs!

Janet

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Yes Pepper. A lot of it is going WAYYYYYYY over my head, but I'm learning more about it each time I read.

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

This storm is huge. I have an uncle down in houston and from the way he wrote his email I know he is speechless. He has no idea what to do yet.

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

Kingston, Jamacia is going to get clobbered it looks like. The eye is expected to be within 2 miles of it when it lands.

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

I have a cousin that I may or may not have mentioned in the past. She sings and is very involved in her Church's missions in Jamaica. I know she is beside herself with worry for the many friends she's made there over the past years. She's been going with her family for quite a few years to help the folks there in different ways.

Geography isn't my best subject, as I've stated before. I don't know how BIG Jamaica is, but from what I've been reading, it's the folks to the northeast of a direct hit that sustain much damage also. The Cayman Islands look very small in comparison. May God KEEP His hand on all those there and Bring them out safely.

Much love to all,
Janet

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Amen and amen. Janet, Praying that you are spared as well.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

I don't get "news" for another half an hour. It is so hard to just sit and wait to find out what is happening with my friends half a world away! I know I told Christi not to worry so much, but now I am doing it. Positive thoughts, positive thoughts, positive thoughts.....like a mantra trying to push the worry out of my brain, but I can't help it...looking at those pictures, and the sheer size of that monster is so daunting! I think I'm gonna hafta go make salsa...the chopping is good therapy....please be safe my dear friends!

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

Yeah, I am worrying too. Enough that I am trying to get all the info I can.

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

That site I posted can be addicting, so be warned of that. It's a major influx of info all at one time. Can be rather daunting with so many post being made rapidly! It will only get more so as Dean makes his path.

One thing that was pointed out since I found it yesterday is that those who are professionals are LABELED at such by the site. They have to have the proper credentials to have that label. I like that they post so many maps and radar images. I feel they are even more up to date than the weather channel. I'm not getting enough "new" news from them.

West Bay, Cayman Islands(Zone 11)

Calm before the storm!! a beautiful night tonight....clear skies, water glass smooth, light breeze...wonderful, ok, reality has set in now....we are in heap of trouble on Monday. The Utilities will be shut off tonight briefly to test restart capability and check backup systems, etc...tomorrow night will be the real deal, no more dress rehearsals ....we are ready shy of getting potted plants in from the porch....getting sand bags filled first thing in the morning, then run the generator cord, lash down the truck and hold on tight....should be here sometime Monday during the day...storm force winds will arrive tomorrow and the beeg winds on Monday....a definite feel of tense here as we anticipate a cat 5 yet again...Ivan still fresh in our minds....the house across the street has never been rebuilt....just a pile of twisted materials...maybe Dean will clean it off and save the owner a large removal fee...We just hope the rubble doesn't end up as projectiles and destroy things around it....

don't know what else to say...katie and i are ready but anxious...Hurricane Ivan produced 22 tornadoes and that is our biggest concern. rats!!! one of my plumerias is about a week away from pushing out it's first blooms......chances of survival for my young plants is slim with winds around 170 knots....

sorry, let me get my thoughts together...

j

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

John!!!!! I have called your Mom, cuz I tried every number for you and Katie and the house! All ring busy.....no service already? Let your mom know I am not a Kook...really do care about you. Sooooooooooo glad you posted!!!! Hugs and hugs and more hugs my friend!

Beaumont, TX

Good to see you carriblue! Whew. Hang on tight. Prayers are being said and thought for you and yours.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

John,Kate, please know that we are anxious for you.....praying for your safety. Plums are great but we'll get you another somehow. Many, many people world wide are praying tonight for the safety of all those in harms way. Praying that God holds you in the palm of His hand. Has a way of humbling all of us. Pray that your arm/wrist/hand will not give you any grief as you pass through this. My mother always told me not to wish for several days away as I was wishing my life away......maybe so....but need to know you are safe and all is well with both of you.

West Bay, Cayman Islands(Zone 11)

Mom is in California now with my brother....her cell service from Oklahoma doesn't work there....thanks for that anyway...we are safe for now as Mean Dean hasn't arrived yet....24 hours from now will be different....gotta tell ya, a bit of a nervous state right now...no sleep tonight....wondering what will happen...it's in God's hands and his Will be done....didn't think we would have to go through another 5 so soon after Ivan...ah well, at least it doesn't ever snow here...i will be up for awhile checking things out so if you want to catch up on yahoo messenger Shari, you know how to find me...invite the rest of our regulars to our chat place if you want, i surely don't want to clog this thread up with my whining...not sure of any of our other pals have it or not...feel free to pass my screen name along to any of them..

j

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

whining???? I think not. My offer still stands. If you can get to the mainland....my home is open. Understand not wanting to leave your nest. I have been through 3 tornados myself....not funny. Mike and I would help get you here.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

You see, dear friend....lots and lots of love and concern coming your way from your DG family. Hold Katie close, keep Spike calm, and know that lots of people are pulling for you to come through this plumies intact! Let us know - through your Mom - or your brother or somehow....if you need anything. Please. Let us know.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Going to messenger....

West Bay, Cayman Islands(Zone 11)

We have to say that Katie and I both are blown away by the love and generosity from you guys! Our lives are truly Blessed to have people like you in our lives. You make the hard times easier to deal with and we feel the open arms waiting for us with every post...

As I type this, Katie is busy securing all the kitchen appliances that we had to replace after Ivan...she can not live without the Belgian waffle maker, nor the coffee maker, not that i can either....

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Ok. So if things don't turn out as we would all hope. Just have to have a housewarming and replace with all brandnew. I don't know how to use messenger.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

We will have a huge DG Post Dean party....get you whatever you need. We'll let Christi coordinate it....I'm real good at volunteering other folks....you ok with that Looocy?

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

John,

It's so good to hear your voice! Thanks so much for keeping us updated.

If there is anything at all that we can do to help you, now or afterward, please do not hesitate to let us know. We're very resourceful folks, dontchaknow!!!

We're still praying for you both and for all those in the path of Dean.

Many hugs to you both,
Janet

Sure. Would be proud to do whatever. Praying, praying that it will not be necessary....that all will be well.

Shari, don't know how to use messenger.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

There are folks from all over DG - the weather forum, sustainable alternatives, and of course here....all thinking, and praying. I am a big believer in the power of the human mind - whether through prayer or meditation....the power has been proven again and again. We may not be able to dissipate this monster, but we can lessen its devastating potential. So far, it has not been as damaging (please, please realize that I am speaking relative to what it COULD have been), as was feared....let's hope it continues in that same pattern....better yet, just blows itself out.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Christi Messenger is a yahoo chat service. Do you have Yahoo?

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

yep. Att_Uverse. Yahoo is my home page.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Okay....look through your homepage edges and you should see something that says "messenger" or "chat"....you will have to sign up for the service - its free - and then we will get your messenger name and we can chat realtime without having to wait for posts and such like.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Where have I been? Probably have to wait for grandsons to get home to show me....ha.

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

I have been lurking off and on all day and am relieved to see Caribblue posting. Luck with all you have left to do with one arm in a cast John. I know Katie is there too. You must be tough folks doing this season after season. ~Blooms

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

I'm sure they can - but it shouldn't be hard. When JB was out here and I was back in Denver we spent hours on messenger! Only thing that got us through.....

Hillsborough , NC(Zone 7a)

Rushed home from work to check for news... Keep the faith!
Got to go feed the dogs, Braveheart is slobbering all over the keyboard (a gentle hint that he is hungry)
Back this evening after feeding everbody and tucking them in...
Warmest aloha to you all...
Jenny

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Hiya Jenny - take care of the babies and then come on back!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Going to bed....I think......will try to be ready for any and all tomorrow. Grandsons are out.....I may have my own hurricane by daylight. Sorry, that was insensitive. A 24 year old and 19 year old that are more than immature......well...what one doesn't think of the other does. No different that when they were little guys. More prayers for God's grace.
Tomorrow.......
