Propagation pictures & such, Part II

Thanks, Karen! What about your big Sinn. leucotricha? How's it looking?

I sowed the seeds Gail ordered on 8-5. I've never had germination earlier than 6 days, so I forced myself to wait til today to look...... Two of the cups have seedlings just barely showing through!!! :o) Yay!!

OK You're gonna have to squint and use your imagination, because this is the best my camera can do...but here's Sinningia macropoda - two seedlings!

Thumbnail by RainGazer

And here's Sinningia piresiana. I know there are four seedlings I can see with my eyes, but in this close-up shot, it looks like maybe there are more. I wish I could get my camera to take clearer pictures this close up. At any rate, I'm tickled pink!!!

Looking good Amy! Still no Sinn. Leuc. seedlings for me... *sigh* Don't know what I did wrong with them!

Looking forward to trying some of the new seeds! Still waiting on my envelope though!

Karen

You're kidding! It should have already been there! I mailed it on the 7th...that was Tuesday. Hmmm... It had to be hand canceled, and she stamped it as such...does that make a difference, ya think?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

great going Rain...............i am not starting mine until i get back so i don't miss a day of watching!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You ought see the package Lin sent to me....................has to be the best package I have gotten in a long long time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just love people who send what they love.................that is an awesome gift, Lin..................so excited about all these Aes....???? and condanthes..................you are too nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't blame you for waiting, Gail! I love watching for the seedlings to pop up. :o)

Ya know...since we oughta see that package Lin sent...you could take pictures and post them! :o) I'd love to see what you got!

You're a sweetie to send her such a super package, Lin! :o)

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

I don't know Amy... I was expecting several things by mail this week, since I was out of town last week... had people hold off sending until I returned. Hubby checks our P.O. box mail since it's near his work... I even told him to watch for an envelope that was a little fatter 'cause of bubble wrap.

Nothing so far...

None of your stuff has arrived?? Sounds kinda fishy... Can you speak to your postal workers and see if they know anything?

(Zone 1)

Oh, I can't wait to get my seeds too! It's gonna be so much fun to sow them and have them GERMINATE & GROW! I am trying to be confident here ladies .... so far my luck with Gessie seeds hasn't panned out at all! I gotta get it right this time!

Oh Gail ... I am so glad you liked everything! And, that they arrived in good shape. I mailed them on Wednesday morning and was wondering how soon they would arrive even though I always ship plants via Priority Mail. Two days ..... ain't bad at all!

I sent rooted cuttings of different Lipstick plants and cuttings of a Columnea that I don't know the name of and a Begonia.

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

No Amy... all my packages that I was expecting have arrived... just not your envelope.

I won't give up though! Maybe Monday!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lin, don't worry about the names....................when i get them to bloom , someone will know what they are..................plan on taking cuttings all day tomorrow............skipping church (LOL) just to get this done as I want everything taken care of before I skip to play...............verrrrrrry excited about the plants..........thanks again

Since this is the "Propogation and such..." thread, I thought I would share some photos I just took.

This is one of the two 'Kee-wee' leaves I put down on April 1st... that actually made babies... just like an AV! I cut the mother leaf off this morning.

Photo #1... the two babies are shorter...

Photo #2... the second pot, the leaf had curled down over the babies... hence, they are a bit taller. Each leaf gave me two babies.

Well that really bothers me, Karen. I mailed it the same day I mailed Nancy's box for the houseplant swap and she got her box 2 days later. I've received seeds packed the same way I sent yours, so I don't think that's the problem, and I discussed it with my PO lady as well. She thought it was fine the way it was. Let me know Monday whether you get it or not, and if you don't, I'll talk to my postmaster and see what she thinks.

Those Episcia babies are adorable! I'm glad you tried the leaves, because I didn't know they could be propagated that way. :o)

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Someone here was very generous with me right before I went on vacation, and shared a number of stolons from their episcias, to add to my collection.

These were put down around July 31st...

And this is my mixed "nursery"... it has a bit of everything in it! Some things desperately need to be potted up! More stolons from my generous benefactor in here also, as well as a couple from my own plants, and the seedlings I started in late April.

Don't worry yourself too much Amy... I'm sure they will come through!

Thanks... Karen

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I got my seeds in two days.......................sorry WildRose.................love all these pics............

I have to share that a DG friend from further south came for the day to separate baby plantlets from the mother leaves.......................this wonderful DGer is 15 year younger than me and worked circles around me (LOL).............she just left to drive back..........and I am really thinking hard about bed time.................

We got soooooooooo much done..........she couldn't even put all her new babies in solo cups with wicks in a big 1020 tray!!!!

Rain, we were potting up some of your great leaves you sent.............several trailers..........just great............and several of another DGer...............

(Zone 1)

Hi Gail: Sounds like you and your DG friend had a very productive and very long day! How fun and wonderful!

I can't wait to get my Gessie seeds in the mail ... I know I'm gonna want to plant them up right away! It will be so much fun to watch them sprout and hopefully grow and thrive to become nice plants! Has anyone else sowed their seeds yet?? Any results, or is it too early?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Amy planted her seeds and 6 days later she had little sprouts!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am waiting until week after next to plant mine..................

(Zone 1)

Oh, I can't wait to get mine .... I guess they can be considered "Baby Sister's/Brother's to y'all's if you've already sown yours! Can't wait to see pic's when they mature! So exciting and so much fun!

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Since this is the propogation thread...

If I take a top cutting of an episcia that has gotten to tall and leggy, and cut the original down to the first pair of leaves, will the original put out new growth? Or will it just up and die?

TIA...

Karen

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

VWR ...The original will make new growth.

(Zone 1)

Oh .... I am so glad you asked that question Karen! I have wondered the same thing .... and will be doing this exact thing in the next day or so!

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Thanks Snowrose!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

The top cutting from an episcia will root and grow the leaves a lot larger. I have some that have gotten huge this way. Fun to do as a challenge. Good luck with yours.

(Zone 1)

And ... I am assuming when you cut the top off, the mother plant will branch out?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Since we have talked about everything, I want to show you just a couple of pics that are waaaaay off topic and i will post in tropicals another day.

When I was plant shopping today, I came across some absolutely beautiful tropicals..........

****made me go waaaaaah, I want a greenhouse.............Tibochina Tree

Thumbnail by gessiegail
Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I think this was called Alamanda 'Cherries Jubilee'......................she was a giant of a plant covered in these blooms.............

Thumbnail by gessiegail
Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

She was called Guido Tree and was in only a 3 gallon container.......look at those blooms.............have to find out more about her

Thumbnail by gessiegail
Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

All of the nurseries had these big containers of Crown of Thorns in every color, including red and yellow...............just beautiful.............

I am through and will post in the right forums, ladies..........

(Zone 1)

Wow! Gail ... did you spend a fortune today?! I have seen the Tibouchina before and really like them. I LOVE that Alamanda .... see them a lot down here but have never seen the 'Cherries Jubilee' ... that is a Beauty! I've never heard of that one called Guido Tree ... must go google!

(Zone 1)

Did a google search for that one called Guido tree .... can't find anything on it! The leaves look like something familiar, but I can't figure out what! LOL. If you find any info on that plant, Gail please let me know! They are all gorgeous!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Those are gorgeous, Gail. You must have had a great day going to nurseries.

Lin - yes, the original episcia from which the top cutting was taken will make new branched growth. I have some like that now and tomorrow I will try to take some pictures.

(Zone 1)

Oh ... will look forward to the pictures Snow!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Please let Snow show you how...............I messed up on mine ..................still in mourning........
Lin, I may be spelling that tree wrong.................I may have to go back to Lowe's in Aransas Pass................they had Pride of Barbados in big fat containers for only 19.00.................trying to wait and see what the nursery lady has come up with for beds at my house............hate to keep buying with no plan in sight..............

***my camera wasn't prepared for the high humidity and heat .............forgot to clean the lense off

Thumbnail by gessiegail
Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Oh, how beautiful! Doesn't resemble our Lowes with it's common mostly burned up left over annuals. The foliage on that Pride of Barbados is so feathery. You have things I have never seen or heard of before.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lowe's in Aransas Pass has wonderful plants all the time..............in Corpus Christi where there is a lot of competition Lowe's has just what you said you had.............dying annuals baked from the sun...............

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I've been taking cuttings on my newest episcia 'Lemon Lime'. It is loaded with the prettiest vibrant pink flowers with lemon yellow throats.

Thumbnail by Snowrose
Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

oh my....................what bright pink flowers with lemon yellow throats.........colors don't get any prettier than that combination...............hot colors!!!!!
