Propagation pictures & such, Part II

Our original thread got too long, so here's Part II. Here's where we're coming from: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/757559/

This little guy decided to bloom today. I think, maybe it's Episcia 'Gray Lady' but can't remember for sure, and I forgot to mark it when I put it in the terrarium. It's got a glowing orange bloom! :o)

I need to be working RainGazer.................and I want to go take pictures, but i can't right now.................pretty pics

(Zone 1)

Oh good .... a new thread! Pretty Episcia Amy, someone will probably be able to ID it won't they? Keep posting all these great pic's, I am Loving it! I put two little Episcia's out on my deck today, hoping they will enjoy all the humidity and grow!

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Pretty episcia Amy! I'll have to look through the episcia ID sites I've collected and give you my guess... LOL! I like the orenge-y bloom though! I've been looking for some varieties lately with flower color other than red.

No, I don't think that beauty is Grey Lady which is much more dull in color. Check this link. I love that lime green with the orange. Very pretty like citrus.

Gessiegail - on the thread Part I you asked about saving and rooting the crown removed from a chimera. Yes, that is exactly what to do. The original plant from which the crown has been removed is basically a chimera baby factory at that point.

Ah yes! It's 'Chocolate Soldier'! I only had a very few to begin with, so there are only a few choices it could have been. 'Chocolate Soldier' is the only one I had that blooms orange, so that's what it is. :o) I always wanted the ones with pink blooms, and they're beautiful, but now that this one has bloomed, I think it's my favorite. It has a vividness like no other orange flower I've ever seen, and that isn't captured by the picture.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Thank you Snow................week after next I will take the plunge (yippy ki yay) and cut out the crown..........can't wait to make 'more of her'.................but be sure that you still do your tutotorial..............

When I take the crown out, can she root herself in a little pot with a zip lock bag? or, I have taken crowns before (just for the fun of it) and put them in soil mix right in the zip lock bag........

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

That's right....sure can, Gail.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Isn't it funny how you go through periods where you decide you don't like something................then, a month later you decide that you are certainly glad you didn't throw that one away.............
When I went to the back to water the episcias, here was Checkerboard..............one of the wish throwaways..........just blooming away.............I am announcing that I am not cutting anymore giant top of the stem cuttings as they take too long to come back big and beautiful as they were..............this is a baby.........

Beautiful pics everyone, I am enjoying the show immensely!!

I recently acquired Suomi....does anybody have a pic of him? Also got Thad's Pink Flamingo, Cleopatra Canadian Clone and Peppermint brocade......hehe...from Florida yet!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Suomi is great.............I have the ones you mentioned except for Thad's Pink Flamingo.........it is a great one!!!!!!!!!!!!! happy for you, threegardeners.........

you can tell that I bought this one from a sale

Thank you Gail....what a beauty...those yellow flowers just pop out, don't they??

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

i want to give you fair warning with Cleopatra and the other light variegated ones.............they don't even stand a chance of living if you don't keep them under some kind of glass or plastic...................for the humidity is a requirement of theirs............

North Augusta, ON

I was thinking about that....I have an empty 5 gallon aquarium...actually 2 of them....thought would be perfect for these guys.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I have to go outside while it is cool and fertilize my outside plants and water (I know you are supposed to do that in the morning).................here is where I warehouse my Cleopatra...........she has never had a stolon on her................just grows bigger and bigger all the time............

Gail... that 'Checkerboard' sure is pretty too!

I can see right now... all of my recent aquisitions of the summer need to grow out and make some stolons so I can make some trades with people!!!

I have yet to have luck with stolons! Don't know why, or what I'm doing wrong. Seems like I plant them and they die! I have an E. Grey Lady that I would love to cut the stolons off of but I'm so afraid it would be a waste cause I know they won't survive! Well .... I just went to take a pic of G. Lady and broke off a stolon by accident, now I guess I will have to plant it. Wish me luck! Here's the pic ... not the nicest looking plant but I'm still learning with these Episcia's. I'd prefer to have a fat & full plant!

Love that Cleopatra!

(Zone 1)

I am so dense .... well .... maybe it's just that I have too many plants and forget about what exactly I have! I just went looking around the house and found two terrarium jars that I forgot about ... one with a Grey Lady and another with E. Fimbriata Blue Heaven! Totally forgot about planting these stolons! Now I know how I need to do it each time. Plant them in jars!! I've not had any luck with just planting them in soil, they always die, but they MUST love the terrarium atmosphere cause they have all these little hair like roots! ..... and Gail ..... I used your suggestion of putting the Spag. on top of the soil! It worked so well! I am so excited! Maybe I need to look around some more .... might find even more surprises!

Lin... does that 'Grey Lady' get any sunlight? I know that most say they prefer bright indirect light, but I've got to tell ya... I've been having better luck and better perrformance from all my episcias getting a little sun. My bedroom window is east-facing. Give me a minute to go back and find a before photo, and I'll show you a comparison.

Be right back...

Lin, I have finally learned how to have big bushy plants............with the episcias.........someone on DG told me that every single time a stolon gets big enough to plant............to take that baby in a small pot with wicking medium and lots of humidity...........that is when I use my Bio Domes............then I am always growing the stolons and the mother plant gets these giant leaves...............she even told me i could take stem cutting from the main stem of the mother plant and root them if i wished.......the only thing is it takes so long when you take a major cutting from the main stem to come back............but never leave the stolons on IF you want big fat leaved episcias..............

**thank you cjolene..........

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I agree 100percent with Wild Rose................week after next, I am putting mine outside on the east end of the porch...........and remembering that the mix I use inside is different than the one outside ..................so they will need a lot more watering outside..............

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

This is my 'Grey Lady' when I first got it... taken on June 20th.

I have found as well with episcia...I have been giving mine at least 3 hours of sun a day and they are far happier and bushier than ever, wish I could remember where I read it though....

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

And this is the same 'Grey Lady' tonight... photo taken from same vantage point, same location.

She has four stolons on her right now, and I've taken off three (I think) since then. I use one-quarter strength MG when i remember... about once every two weeks.

Hi threegardeners - I found a blossom photo of Suomi taken a while back. Got yourself some nice new additions from a town called Florida, Canada, right? The only one I grow from what you mentioned is Cleopatra. You'll have to post some pictures.

she does look nice and healthy, Wild rose.......................

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

My baby girl kitty, Remy, has taken to nibbling... ever so daintily... on the episcias! Especially the flowers! Guess it's like having nasturtiums in your salad! LOL!

*(mumble, grumble, darn little scamp, grumble, mumble, mutter...)

(Zone 1)

Oh, I love that Cleopatra too .... what beautiful coloration in that foliage! I love pink! I love the yellow flowers on the E. Suomi too. Someone gave me a Suomi stolon awhile back and it died. :( I love that Chocolate Soldier in Rain's photo too! They are all just soooo pretty .... I think I'm liking Episcia's a lot! I googled and found that site with all the A to Z listings .... aaaaaah, what Beauties! Now I have a list of "wants".... stopped listing at about a dozen!

(Zone 1)

Ok, question. I saw some photo's of Episcia's planted in enclosed jar/terrariums and it looks like they just fill the jars .... so, I take it they don't mind the crowded position?

I would be so afraid of putting anything in full sun here ... the sun is so intense I'd be afraid it would burn these plants. I think I will put them in the East facing windows where they get a morning sunlight filtered by trees but very bright light all day! I've had some Hoya's and Lipstick plants in that location and they just LOVE it! Is natural light better for Episcia's than grow lights? Or would they do about the same either way?

Wow VAWildRose ... that's a nice looking G. Lady! Ok, tomorrow I'm going to take all the stolons off of mine and plant them in a terrarium! I don't like the spindly look of it now, so maybe it will fill out if I take off the stolons!

North Augusta, ON

umm...ya...a town called Florida, here in Canada....I will post pictures when they grow some..just basically stolons now. When I say direct sun....I am talking direct Canadian sun...lol...probably equivalent to bright light down south.

(Zone 1)

:) You are probably right Threegardeners! Big difference isn't it, from Canada down here to Florida?!

North Augusta, ON

It's a world away Lin...

(Zone 1)

Yeah, but what are your temp's like up there nowadays? I know I probably couldn't handle the winters with ice and snow, but I bet it's nice right now .... while we are suffering 97 degree days with heat indexes at 110! This is the hottest summer I can remember in a loooong time!

North Augusta, ON

It's been really hot for here........today was 89 with the heat index feeling like 105...warnings out to stay indoors and keep an eye on the elderly.

Suomi's blooms are amazing! Very vivid! :o) And Cleopatra is stunning, as always...

Chirita 'Silver Surfer' is gearing up for a show. Here's a macro of the bud. :o)

The Sinningia leucotricha seedlings are starting to show a bit of fuzz!! :o)

The whole lot of Sinn. leucotricha seedlings. The one on the far left is the one showcased above.

Codonanthe devosiana 'Paula' is blooming. I love the pink in the flowers! You'll have to excuse the water spots on the leaves...sorry...

(Ki, I got that name correct, didn't I?)

More great photos Amy! Your Sinn. Leuc. seedlings look fantastic!
