Link from DG to The Seed Site?

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

Dave:

Just a suggestion.....

Would it be appropriate to add a link to The Seed Site ( http://theseedsite.co.uk/index.html ) from within DG - maybe from the PlantFiles? They do allow this usage of their site (see their copyright page: http://theseedsite.co.uk/copyright.html ).

I use the site very frequently for seed and seedpod identification and I recommend it freely to others all of the time - something I've noticed many other people here on DG do as well. Our user base might find it helpful and convenient to have the link right here for them when they are researching a particular plant.

Wow, I learned a lot reading that second link - but what's the difference between a hot link and a hyper link?

It sounds to me like they don't want you to link to a particular image file, but to the whole site instead. It is an awesome site though, no doubt about it.

Claypa - A hot link from DG, for example, would include a specific image or file from the other web site directly on a page on the DG site - it would appear to the DG user as though the content was actually part of DG. Sort of the web equivalent of a dynamic cut and paste :-)

Ginny, if I'm understanding you correctly, you're suggesting you might place a hyperlink ks to an external site within your own PlantFiles comments. If so, we discourage this practice for two reasons:

1) Not all sites want to be linked to, for a variety of reasons (some feel their information is being used to benefit a competing site, for example); and

2) Over time, those links may become broken as sites transfer to a different server, they replace/change a URL, or the site becomes defunct. Those links are a maintenance issue for our editors, as we don't have any way to even know where the links might be without physically looking for them and manually testing them by clicking on them to see if they still work.

Hi Terry. No, I was suggesting that a link to the main page of the site be placed, for example, on the PlantFiles main page or as an option under the search and browse tools perhaps.

Although, if you discourage the practice of placing links in PlantFiles comments, then I guess you wouldn't be very likely to include such a link yourself anywhere else - that kinda answers my question :-)

Thinking about it a little bit more, it could seem rather as though Dave's Garden was promoting The Seed Site - sort of like WalMart promoting KMart maybe.

Sorry, I just find this site incredibly useful in conjunction with Dave's Garden. I was looking to share that information with anyone else needing seed/seedpod identification assistance, since it seems to be so often the site that many people point others to anyway on an individual basis.

I'll just slink away and go stuff my other foot in my mouth now..... ;-)

Actually, we do have a few links to other sites, which we placed under the "Extras" link. If the Seed Site is interested in reciprocal links, we'd be happy to add them to this list in exchange for a link to us from their site ;o)

Hmmmmm, I can't speak for them, obviously, but it doesn't sound very promising. On their copyright page they say, in part:

Quoting:
.....We do not add links to websites just because they have a link to The Seed Site. Please don't ask.

Oh well. C'est la vie.

Well Foo on them!!!
