Is there any favourite toy with you?

Most of us have been impressed upon a certain thing ever since childhood. It can be a doll, or anything, which we just cannot detach from the mind or even the thing. It should be always with us within reach and sight. Some 40 years back this little simple toy was bought in an exhibition and it still never ceases to fascinate me! For all its attributes - simplicity, colour, effectiveness, zero maintenance and hence no wear and tear, I have liked it so much that it has to be always in my sight in our showcase.

It's a toy elephant that can walk. But it needs a slight slope, no keys, no batteries! Just place it at the highest spot and it sways left and right and cluckles its way down, much the same way the huge pachyderm walks! Its four grey legs are free for movement to enable it to move - simple physics.

I had one very similar when I was young Dinu!

While not really a favorite of mine, I've kept a little plastic
pig since childhood.

At the time we were kids, my cousin and I would swap the pig back
and forth, insisting he brought good luck. As we grew up, we realized
to believe in such silliness was childish, so I put the pig into a little
red velvet lined golden treasure chest, where he has lived ever since.

It is fun to entertain the thought that the pig brought me good luck, as
coincidentally, I seem to have ended up with him for good, and have
what I consider to be a great life.

Ah, to be young.

My favorite was my Chatty Cathy doll that I still have and she is in great condition. I have a picture of myself holding her at age 5? Chatty had buck teeth and mine had just been taken by the tooth fairy. We made a cute pair.
This is a photo of the picture. Hope you can see it.

melody,
Similar? That's great to know!

WUVIE,
It sounds silly only when we leave behind some young years! But at that age and time, it was the most interesting thing! That's the way it is for everyone. We had many shrubs of Caesalpinias along the compound wall of our convent. Someone used to pluck off the inflorescence and flatten it in the book and show it to us with the story that he/she had a kitten born out of it. We used to believe it and then do the same - keep that in our books and wait for the kitten to arrive!

cpartschick,
Nice picture with that tooth story. The old toys bring back so much memories, does it not?

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Oh, Dinu, if someone told me such a practice would bring a kitten
my way, I would have plucked every inflorescence off the trees. Every
book we had would be filled with them.

What a cute story!

I think after a few of my friends got to discuss its silliness and it was just a lie of the highest class, we removed them from our books, but by then it had been a long time! LOL.

Yes Dinu, mine was an elephant too. It was different in shape and color...(actually, I think it looked more like the African elephant), but an elephant non the less. Mine was gray, but the trunk was raised in a similar manner. I think that means a blessing of good luck in some cultures.

We call that raised trunk of the elephant as a *salute*. It looks so elegant does it not?

Very elegant...I wish I had that toy today...I don't know what happened to it.

I was very young....maybe 4 or 5 and the circus came nearby. An older neighbor girl who could drive took me to see it. They had an elephant with a carriage on it's back and we got to take an elephant ride. She bought me the little toy elephant as a remembrance.

Thanks for the thread...I haven't thought of that in years.

I have a toy like that. It is a mama duck and 2 babies. Your elephant is wonderful. What a treasure! I love old toys. Keep it with a humidifier. Our hot, dry climates are not kind to wood, plastic, or bakelite. I have to keep them in the cases with the guitars too.
