I posted what I thought would really be exciting on a forum. It was a project my grands and I had for a long weekend. Although the forum had been active up to that point, not one single person ever responded....................so I tried to edit out every post I had made. It won't let me do it. What is the reasoning behind this logic?
Thanks
gail
Why are we limited to x number of edits a day???????
why Gail? There was lots of people, including me, that read and enjoyed that thread!!!
so I tried to edit out every post I had made.
Ummm, well - that's why we have a limit on the number of edits each member can make in any 24-hour period.
In the past, we have had a few occasions when a member abused their editing privileges and tried to destroy every post they ever made, leaving a lot of cryptic threads and bewilderment in their wake.
In other cases, members have used the edit to make controversial or provocative "flaming" posts, then deleting their posts when someone rose to the bait, leaving the impression they were being attacked without provocation (when in reality, the other posts were an ill-advised reaction to the deleted postings.)
To summarize the FAQ that deals with editing/deleting posts and threads:
You can edit your own posts, including removing all the information (this leaves a blank post.) For obvious reasons, we discourage anyone from completely removing a post as it may cause the discussion thread to become nonsensical or illogical. If you accidentally posted the same reply twice, we'll be happy to remove the second/duplicate post (contact us for assistance.)
Likewise, if you realize you placed a thread in the wrong forum, contact us and we'll move it for you (be sure to provide a link to the thread and your suggestion on where it should be moved.)
If you wish to delete a thread, contact us for assistance - be sure to provide a link to the thread and your reasons for wanting it removed ;o)
i just wanted to remove it (not the one you are referring to sweet 3gardeners) as it is embarrassing to go to that much trouble to take pics and not one person even respond after 3 days....................the pics are still there............just was going to remove the remarks.
I don't think I understand about trying to portray being falsely attacked. If i think someone has attacked me, I simply damil them and ask them what I have done to cause such a reaction..............oh well.............doesn't matter.
It was probably a thread I should have put on another forum.............not a big deal...........just wondered why one couldn't edit their remarks on one thread in 4 months.
If it's a busy forum like you said, maybe it slipped down the page before many people saw it? Or if it was a thread with a lot of pics, maybe people didn't have time to look at all the pics when they first saw the thread and meant to come back later and look at them, but then forgot, or couldn't find the thread again, or something like that, or if it was a bit off topic for the forum then maybe people didn't respond because of that
As far as the editing posts to make it seem like they were falsely attacked--normal nice people wouldn't do that, but from time to time there have been people here (probably still are a few somewhere!) who seem to enjoy picking fights with other people, they're the sort of people who would do something like that.
I can have a instant reaction to something, but thankfully, I am not smart enough to ever be devious..............just mean up front (LOL)
mm...I have deleted diary entries here twice after reading them the next day and thinking- "wow, what hormones were coursing through your system, sister?" And I'm the only one who reads those- even I didn't want to hear me rant a second time :) And erased one tread posting entirely after understanding the situation better a few minutes later, and realizing I'd completely misheard the person (hopefully before it was read by anyone, hopefully! tho I'll survive looking like a complete dork, it's not all that uncommon :/ )
I can see why people would want to go back and edit out hurtful or just plain annoying text, I think the editing feature is underused if anything :) cannot see why you would limit the number per day (how many is it limited to?) if people want to edit out their own words I think they should be allowed to. Why should venom or stupidity be kept there, documented for posterity, if the person realizes they are wrong? Is it to shame people into thinking before they type? Most computer chatters are held back too much, not not enough.
Gessiegail, I would love to see your grandkid's projects- please post the link here so I can go look at them.
Ok, my curiousity's getting the best of me--now I wanna see your pics, too, Gessie! I know I frequent only certain threads, therefore I miss out on special things on other threads. Lately I've been checking out unfamiliar threads, just in case something is there that I can benefit from.
She posted it in the terrarium forum...which is a very quiet forum.
Hylabean, if someone gets carried away, they (or someone else) can contact us for assistance in editing out the hurtful words.
As recently as this past year, someone found a loophole in our system (it's been patched) and attempted to to rip out all their posts because they were storming out the door over a conflict with another member. Basically, they wanted to make sure people knew they had left, and leave plenty of speculation as to whether they or administrators had removed them and their posts. It was an act of thoughtless, malicious vandalism, plain and simple. They later apologized for acting so rashly.
Fortunately, we were able to recover most of what they tried to destroy and salvage the threads for the good of the community. (The posts themselves contained nothing controversial - the only controversy was in their arbitrary removal.)
Unfortunately, those things do happen from time to time; hence the edit limit.
At least we do allow self-editing ;o) Most other gardening forums don't have that capability, or they choose to not give their members access to it.
Thanks, threegardeners--I'll check it out!
This is 'suffering' having to be exposed (LOL)
********It never occured to me that my thread here would generate any interests at all except from administration...........another laugh is coming!
LOL, Gail, this forum is much more active than the terrarium forum as you can see by the number of viewers! But everyone learns something from these threads.
A few years back, a forum I moderated featured many wonderful and
helpful beauty tips members had posted over a long period of time. This
forum had become quite a valuable resource. One person became upset
and began erasing everything she had ever posted. This was silly, as the
posts were, (until she had a bad day on her own) valuable and informative
for the rest of the internet community.
It is similar to taking one's football and going home. ;-)
A personal edit to change the way you feel the next day is one thing, but
to go back in time deleting things that had nothing to do with the current
'problem' if you will, take from the community at large. If we all began erasing
our posts because no one replied in a few days, the site would be a sad mess.
It didn't take long before the owners of the board which I speak set a rule
in place that after 5 edits in a row, the member's posting privileges were
locked until he or she contacted the administrator with a good reason for doing
so.
As for no one posting a response, often a seldom used thread may not be
viewed for days. There are times I've carried on a conversation with myself
on Dave's, and in fact, am pretty much having one now on the Wallpaper thread.
I don't mind, I realize people have other things to do than comment and read
about my wallpaper trials and tribulations. LOL. Besides, writing is often therapy,
and if no one is listening or responding, at least I got it out of my head and it is
there if anyone ever drops by.
Just a side note, on each thread, there is a counter in the top right corner which
posts how many replies as well as how many views were in that thread. As the
thread has many views, it is possible some viewed it but did not have time to respond.
Some viewed it and may just be lurkers. Some may have viewed it and had no
interest. Some may have clicked and then the phone rang.
This is a great big community and we never know what other people are
doing when they view our threads. We can't take it personal if no one responds.
Known to jabber on,
KM
:-)
it is certainly ok with me if this thread dies a natural death..............the question has been answered (smile)
You'd be surprised how long a thread lasts. They have
been known to be dragged out of the closet from years
ago.
That's what makes this community so fun, everyone gets
to reply with their two cents, including mine.
Ha ha! :-)
