texasgal i was just doing all my watering and maintenance that i do daily....some repotting ...some cuttings:)
What plants would you recommend for that tropical paradise?
chrissy, All of us Mimi's, Nana's, Nannie's,etc. understand why you would be proud of such a beautiful and talented granddaughter. Never think we would shame you for bragging....you have a right. We need to ask Dave for a "grandchild bragging forum"...hahaha.....think he would go for it.
Christi Lou
Yep....Nana here too! So I'd go for it!
A tree I had forgotten about! Very pretty but a little invasive in some places for you 77
Geisha Girl a duranta my tree is abot 8ft tall and is about 5ft across....planted near a pink crepe Myrtle really pretty combination ....flowers allthrough the warm weather....some people lollypop them but that is for formal gardens ....I let it have it's way!
Open to the strains of
Turning Japanese.... I think I'm turning Japanese..... I really think so.....:)
Oh Chrissy, she's beautiful, and so talented! Bet she gets it from you!
The years have really gone by so faaaaast so far for this NaNa, too! Seems like they were just babies yesterday........I know.....that was a favorite of mine too....Beatles, 60's. Oh for the good ole days!!!!!!!!!! LOL
We really do need a Brag thread!
Nice tree....love the color! Don't need anymore trees tho....Thanks!

No 77 my fault I should have called it a large shrub....if it is in a pot like many plants it behaves.....and you can trim it back although I like it's weepy look. what about the Profesor Pucchi on TM 's thread ...huge flowers....love mine the best gardenias I have ever seen or sniffed!:)
I think that I will never see a poem as lovely as a tree.........
Yes, Chrissy, I was just over there! That is lovely! So far I've had three gardenias die....one I had in full sun....too hot. Got another set, moved them over by the water faucet...guess it was too wet cause they died. So have temporarily given up on gardenias!
That one is a beauty!!!!!!!!!!!!
Need shelter from hot afternoon sun yours and my sun is too fierce for gardenias they need perfect drainage but moisture retentive....cnfused? that just means a good peaty mix...with side drainage that is the holes that run up the sides of the pot as well as the bottom...don't overwater...it is about humidity...The only thing I feed mine with is well aged cow dung used as a thick mulch...kept away from the stem.:) They are worth that...just think jungle flower jungle conditions :)
In the jungle.... the mighty jungle ...the lion sleeps tonight.......in the jungle......
Yep Yep Chrissie, another one of my favorite songs! The last two gardenia I had in the ground, so may try another in a pot that I can move if it gets unhappy! It didn't have good drainage. I may try again later.
I am thinking about the orchids tho. I have always wanted to do that. My Mom raised them when we were in Hawaii. You can even get them at Lowes for a fairly decent price.
I just have to limit myself on what has to be overwintered....cause of space. That's one reason I don't have 300 plumies like Dutchlady. I would have to figure out how to enclose my whole back yard....ummm not a bad idea really. In Galveston they have the Moody Gardens....and some of it's enclosed. Just a thought. Would have to have some holes for rain....cause I sure would get tired of watering. OK nevermind. Like Shari says...back to the regularly scheduled programming.
Orchids are not real fussy about space...a shelf in a garage or even a wide window sill would do during the coldest part of the year...as long as the window didn't get too cold. Wind doesn't bother them...its actually a good thing for them, and they do very well during our rainy season, because they don't sit in dirt - so no wet feet. Let me know if you decide to try it.
Shari, I will try the orchids, but it will have to be later in the year! Maybe even next spring.
I'm going to call it a night...can hardly hold my eyes open. Talk to yall tomorrow!
Have a good evening!
I think Bon Jovi is gorgeous!
I agree terri!! LOL
But Tom Selleck still rules in my book.

Shari your page on orchids.....just ..........so evocative ...of heaven ...here on earth.....lovely stuff.
Bon Jovi.....Shot through the heart....and you're to blame......ha ha ha ..ok
then you are too young to remember ....the yard birds....cilla black....Lou Lou....Dave Clarke five...Hermen's Hermits....the Shadows....Cliff Richards....PJ Proby.....The Who....and many I can't remember now...all of them and of course The Beatles....I was lucky enough see in person at Sydney Stadium....I met my hubby at the Starlift 64 Concert....it was called the British Invasion in the pro mo.....Gerry and the Pacemakers
etc......loved that era even if it did push the Surfer thing into the background.....it changed the face of the music industry at the time....and of course Tom Jones from over your way was HUGE
whew....enough of that :) Tell us what you have in your lovely garden?...is it flooding over there? being Summer- is it a bit warm or hot
In the Summer time... when the weather is fine......la dee dee da da
Hey Chrissy, I'm trying to do 'tropical ' here, I'm thinking 'South Pacific', frangipani, and
'Gonna wash that man right out of my hair, and send him on his way'. LoL!
You guys crack me up so much! Loved Gerry and the PaceMakers, and the DCFive!!
Welcome, welcome, welcome terriculture! So happy to make the aquaintance of another tropickid!!
My best friend was a director for the community theater out here during our first tour in the late 80's. We naturally wanted to do "South Pacific" - and we were lucky enough to have some fine voices amoung our members. But she had lived here so long, that they had done SP too many times, and I never did get to play Bloody Mary....still want to to this day.
"Happy talk, keep talking happy talk....talk about things you like to do"....must have been written just for us!!!!
hey hey we're the monkeys!!
yah know...i had a job that i so hated.....and i used to hum that all day long....it made me feel better...
also, another one that helped me get thru was ....
everybody was kungfu fighting da da da duh duh duh duhdida
LOL! Kungfu Fighting! LOL "Take THAT you pesty weed" Kiiii yai! "You talkin to ME, you green-eyed aphid?" Middle-aged Ninja Gardners.....should we make the movie?
island...we could use it out weeding....or if you are in a hostile work environment....use it there!!!
Y'all crack me up also! I'll try to remember that on the next weed I encounter! LOL!
My neighbor's would think I was really ready for the looney bin, then! Between my overgrown garden (My banana trees reach above the fence all the way around my garden) and my bright blue muumuu with the pineapples on it, it wouldn't take much to think that I had been pushed over the edge!!!!!
Speaking of pesty bugs...have any of you seen a bright orange leggy bug on your plumeria? I'll have to get a picture. If you put a plastic baggy up to the bugs, they'll jump right in. They're not too bright. Easy to catch. Just zip and then they suffocate. So see....just try to mess with my plumie....or the Ninja Gardener will get you! HaHaHa!
Had to go all the way back to the top to see where we started........wonaful', wonaful'. Can you just imagine what it would be like were we all to be in the same room??? Everyone talking over each other, laughing, having a great time. How fantastic that from all over this planet we have such a collective memory and such a good time.
God is good everyday!
LouC
collective memory? It is only with the constant repetition in these forums that I even remember my name! Old-timers is creepin in on my brain a little faster than expected..ha ha. See, you guys are all therapy for me! And SO much cheaper than a therapist. More fun too!
LOL. I am young so instead of old-timers I have young-timers. I inherited it from my mom and my brothers are the same way. We are very pitiful at times. LOL
My goodness Pep....you will definately need the constant input from DG!
LOL. I tend to remember weird and non important things. If taking out trash is considered important then I forget to take it out. LOL
Who doesn't? I thought that was normal. It's not......uhoh!
Nope 77 *snapsnap*.....we are all weird here. Not a normal one in the bunch. Thank goodness.
Thank goodness is right! When I started with Tropical plants my Mom thought I had lost my mind! You can't do this....you can't do that. Now she is just totally amazed that my garden has done so well! But, before I started, we toured the neighborhood and most of what I have, someone in my neighborhood has also....except for my pineapple plant actually having a pineapple growing! Smile, grin.....ecstatic YEA!!!!!!!
When I worked in the office, someone would give me a plant, and it never got watered...and would die unless some kind soul came and got it and saved it! Now being retired, I have time to water plants, actually I make time....it is a priority. It is something I enjoy. It brings great pleasure and reward, is good exercise, and excellent therapy! I've had to do research, and it's been trial and some error, but an amazing journey! Like Mom says, "It gives you a reason to get up in the morning and go outside and see what is in bloom." She has always been a gardener, and her mother before her. I think she had given up on the idea that I ever would be! Now she tells me all of the time how proud she is of me and my garden! I use alot of Miracle Grow, but also believe in the Miracle Maker who has given me such beautiful gifts that I hope to pass on to my grandchildren also.
I am so thankful for all of you who share that love of tropical plants as well! It really is great therapy!
Now if Chrissy were here she'd be singing something so I will in here place...."I see trees of green....red roses too"....." .... and I say to myself, what a wonderful world".
Don Johnson....mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm :)
Next to giving birth what could bring you closer to the creator.......in our gardens we create life ourselves......like having babies... each of our carefully tended floral babies are true miracles to us....I feel that anyone who does not know the great joy that is gardening....cannot be as happy as we are....so yes if we can give that gift (the love of gardening) to our children or grand children then we have done good ...real good.
I hear babies cry... I watch them grow ...they 'll learn much more than we'll ever know ..so I say to myself what a wonderful World .....ooh yeh!
ever know
Satchmo.....one of a kind......as we all are. Indeed a wonderful world all bright and brand new everyday. This is one of the most soothing threads ever on DG. Just shows to go ya'......music is a gift of God.....make a joyful noise O' my soul......
Hey Connie!! Where is your sis hiding???
Hi pepper ! Haven't seen hide nor hair of her since Sunday. She's busy loving her precious grandbaby I'm sure.
I was going to suggest a plant for the tropical look. But I have no experience with it yet. I just know it was on my want list and now I have a couple. :) Heliconia http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/55674/ They're beeeeeeeeeeautiful. Bird of paradiseish flowers. Home Depot called it the plant of the year or something. I could not believe my eyes when there they were calling my name...just want my heart desired.
Bird of Paradise and Heliconia are lovely! Love those flowers! Definatley adds to the tropical look! Thanks for the link!
