"mark as unread" on a thread?

North Augusta, ON

Is this possible? Like our d-mail has? Many times i have a lot of new threads to look at, and if I want to reply to one then get sidetracked, and can't remember which thread, or even which forum...lol
Would be nice to be able to mark it as unread until I can get to it later.

Great idea - I've done the exact same thing.

One possibility would be add it to your favorites, edit it to note you want to reply.

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

I'd love the "mark as unread" option for threads!

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

I'd love to see this option as well.

If I add a "Mark as unread" then the Skip to New won't work for you if you use it. The features are linked together. Are you willing to lose Skip to New functionality (in the thread you mark as unread only) to gain mark as unread functionality?

For the people who just hit the "End" key on their keyboard to go to the end of the thread it wouldn't make any difference really, would it?

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

The End key takes you to the end of the thread, doesn't it? The Skip to New takes you to the place in the thread where you last read it.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

no, not willing to lose the skip to new feature.

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

I LOVE the skip to new feature...

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

please don't take away "skip to new!"

Even a quick response will put the thread on your watched list, and then it's easy to find.

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

Dave,
You're not saying that if you add the "Mark As Unread" feature that you would eliminate the "Skip To New" feature all together, right? Just that we couldn't use the "Skip To New" on the same thread that we had "Marked as Unread".

edited because I hit send too soon:

Also, if we later read the thread, would that reinstate the function of the "Skip To New" feature?

Sorry, I didn't read the parenthetical explanation closely enough in Dave's response...

As long as "skip to new" is lost only on the thread that I've just marked as unread, until I go back and read it again, I'm fine with that.

Yes, it would work that way only on the specific thread. If you "Mark as Unread" a thread, then next time you visit it, the "Skip to new" would actually take you to the first post in the thread. If ya'll are okay with that, then I'll be happy to add in the feature.

dave

Mark as Unread is now in! It's at the top, next to the "Watch this thread" link.

Wow! More "magic" at Dave's Garden. Cool!

North Augusta, ON

Yayyyy, thanks Dave.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Excellent! Thank you! I know I've forgotten to go back and comment on a few things-this will be so helpful! :) :) :)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

That makes complete sense. If the thread is "unread" then all posts are "new!"

Thanks for another great option/feature, Dave!

Thanks Dave. I think this will come in handy when I peek onto DG while I'm at work. I don't usually post from work - so I can remember to go back and post when I come home.

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

Thanks Dave!!!

I enhanced the "Mark as unread" so it now works with Skip to new!!

When you mark as unread a thread, then next time you come in it will think that you just haven't seen the very latest reply that was there when you marked it as unread.

oh, very cool!

You're just too good to us Dave and we love it ;-)

This is at the top of the Threads, I agreee and I like it. It is also showing up at the bottom of the threads here:

I think the "Mark as unread" needs it own line and bullet.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

I think got2b is right. It's fine at the top of the page, but at the bottom it needs its own bullet.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Thanks for cleaning up the bullet formatting! :)

I didn't think I would use either "Mark as unread" or "Skip to New" but after using them a while I love them. Hmm, does that mean I'm getting old and resisting new/changes? lol

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Laughing so hard right now.

Never, and I mean never, have I ever pushed the END button. I did not know
what it did, nor did I care to know. As a test, I pushed it, and wa-la.

Now can someone tell me what the 'insert' button does?

LOL

Very cool :-) I like this. Thanks Dave, for making this site so responsive to our needs, and thanks threegardeners for suggesting this.

Karen:

You don't want to know what that insert button does - LOL!!

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Ha ha ha! I pushed it and nothing happened. Though maybe, just maybe
it did something I'll never know about until the computer poops out. The
technician will ask "You didn't push the 'insert' button, did you?"

;-)

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

The only thing I've ever found that the insert button does is if you're in word processing software (probably spreadsheets and things too) it lets you toggle between "insert" and "overtype" mode. If your cursor is in the middle of an area of text that you've already typed, "insert" means if you start typing there, the new text will be inserted in the middle of the old text, but if you're in "overtype", then it will type over any text that was after the cursor. Personally I never use the overtype mode--insert is usually the default when you open the program so you probably don't even need to use the key unless you like the overtype mode.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Ah, many thanks!

And that's exactly why I hate to accidently hit the 'insert' button.

OK - I am going to ask the question because I can't be the only one wondering....

(I want to use a small font for the question...but don't think I can....) So, here goes.......

Is Dave a real person??

Thank You Brinda
I have to learn my way around the site.
There is so much great info here. Best money I ever spent.

I even learned that perhaps some thought the 'rosie' I was missing was Rosie O'Donnell !! (NOT) My Rosie is my pointer - she died last July. I still miss her.

Anyway, lots of great info and lots of great folks who are willing to take the time to educate. ...and now I know Dave IS a real person!

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

You're most welcome! You will meet many wonderful people here and make tons of great friends too.

Dave? I have a question. What are the possibilities of switching places with the 'Watch Thread' and the 'Mark as unread'? I'm just so used to clicking the bottom link when I want to watch a thread that many times I don't look close enough to know what I might click. LOL

Is it just me or is anyone else experiencing this?
