Confusion about Diaries & Journals

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Dave,

Is there a way we could be referred to a nicely set up garden journal and a diary?
Every time I go there to work on mine I later realize (being a teacher myself) that if we could see an example, if would be much easier.

Perhaps a "great" example could be noted somewhere so that we could "copy" the format. I notice that not many people are using the journal and diary parts of DG, and it may be due to the same type problems I have. (And I think part of it is that there are so many options...great if you first know the basics.)

Thanks...just an idea! :-)

For journals, if you you click on the "journals" tab then click on "view journals", it'll show all the publicly available journals, in order of how many entries there are. The people at the top of the list all have a ton of entries, so at the very least there'll be a lot in their journals to look at, so you'll probably find some good examples. The problem with posting "model" journals is that people all like to organize their journals differently, so I think if you look through the first 10 or so journals in the list, they'll all be "good" journals but they'll all be set up completely different. But hopefully there'll be some good ideas in there!

Diaries it's the same way--everyone uses theirs differently. Here it might be a little harder to find "good" diaries since when you go to the "view other diaries" option it shows them in order of who's edited theirs the most recently instead of who has the most entries, but if you look through a few you'll get some ideas. But really both these features are things where everyone's is going to be different, you have to figure out what you want to do with your journal/diary, what tabs or categories make sense for your garden. Then if you need help with making yours do what you want, then there's great info in the DG Journals & Diaries forum to help you get started, or you can post questions if there's something you want to do and can't figure out how.

Oddly enough, I was looking through some and found yours, which is very neatly organized. Thanks.

Is there a way to make your journal and/or diary private? Or can I select users who can view it?

Thanks

There's no option to let some people see them but not others, either they're private and nobody but you can see them, or they're public and everyone can see them. In the diary I think you can choose to make some individual entries private even if the diary overall is public though.

Thanks ecrane3. How do I make them private?

I don't remember off the top of my head and I'm already late for work--if nobody else has responded by the time I get home tonight I'll figure it out and post again. In the diary, if yours is public then each time you make a new entry you'll see a checkbox in that entry that asks you if you want to make it private, but I don't remember where the overall option is to make it public/private.

Click on the Journals tab above, then "manage your own journal", and under the "Main Menu" list, click on
"Privacy (Update your privacy settings)"
I don't know how the diary privacy works, I think you have to set that for each entry as you do them, like ecrane said.

I think you might be right about the diary only having the public/private option on each entry--I just went in there now and I don't see any options to make the whole thing public or private, so I think you do have to do it for each entry. Default is it'll be public unless you check the box for that entry.

ecrane3 is correct. I'll be updating that soon (likely in the coming weeks) and the entire privacy settings for the diaries will be re-written and enhanced. Expect much more flexibility in your diary's privacy settings soon.
