I have been trying to get more hummer pics away from the feeders. It is not an easy thing to do since they are at the feeders 99% of the time I see them.
DAILY PICTURES Vol. 15
Great photos Frank, Loved the Towhee. Had one or two here earlier, but they moved on. I have seen one or two Cedar Waxwings, not sure if they were just passing through or had a nest somewhere in my garden. sure wish a pair of Chickadees would come by and decide to stay.
Donna
fchisolm: those are great shots!
rutholive - I have a bunch of Chickadees I could send to you!
Pelletory,
Tell a buzzard or vulture that they aren't supposed to be able to smell. They can in fact find a dead chicken in a paper bag under a complete canopy of trees, placed there when no birds were in sight.
Jays, Crows and others seem to have a keen sense of smell. Personally I would believe that each type of bird develops according to its needs. Maybe peanuts are a necessity or, like ice cream to us, a wonderful treat.
Rod (mate of 8)
Well as you probably noticed by the wording of that post of mine its not by any knowledge of my own. I'm going by what my 2 Avian Vets I've been to have told me.
It would be nice to see if there were any papers written on that subject to see if there is any hard facts one way or the other about different birds.
I definitely agree about the ice cream theory! :-)
Maybe they just see something new in their territory and check it out. But, as I said earlier, I haven't seen the Pileated's around since spring. Very curious to me.
Those peanuts are mighty popular. The Pileated was back this morning so I imagine this feeder is now on his list of great breakfast drive-thrus.
That's great sybil!! Whats the red thing (looks like a pouch) wrapped around the other branch?
it's a red pouch.
LOL, okay.
It's a secret. :)
ROTFLMBO, I have to go back and look. :-)
I KNOW what it is!!!Hahahaha (not laughing at you sybil)
I think it's a cute idea.
I have one, maybe I'll try that.
Had any success with it?

ditto that fchisolm! I haven't got a clue...
I bet there's bird nip in there! HAHAHAHA You sly devil you!
Janet
No I thought maybe it was a bird bed or cozy. I used to have one for my smaller parrots. Looked just the same but a different color. If you look at the photo of the Blue Jay at the peanut feeder earlier it looks like the same shape as one.
Okay if thats not right, is it a cleanup towel you keep wrapped around a branch?
Now I'm really fishing!LOL

Yes A Peanut Pouch!
You're getting warmer...
A Squirrel Pouch W/ Treats!!!
Darn, I have to go to bed. I'll see if i'm right in the morning. Night!
Frank, I was just kidding. I used the term Bird nip like you would Cat Nip. To my knowledge, (extremely limited) there is no such thing as Bird Nip. I just thought with all of that action on the peanut feeder that maybe there was something "special" in that red pouch as an attractant.
I do like YOUR explanation though. Sounds like something *I'd* do! HAHAHA
Janet
OH C'mon, I'm awake now. I was expecting to see if one of us had the answer, lol.
ROTFL-Decoy Woodpecker
Alright if it isn't the squirrel pouch w/ treats is it just something to attract hummingbirds? If so then why is it tied up tight in one photo and different in another.?
Hope I hear the answer before having to leave.
But Thanks to all participants, this has been quite entertaining! :-)
The actual contents of the red pouch - well, the reality does not compare with your imaginative ideas. I can't (won't) tell you what is in the pouch but really, it's not as creative as a Decoy Woodpecker or Bird Nip or house key storage!
You should take every one of these ideas and market them. They're terrific!
By the way, Pelletory: "If so then why is it tied up tight in one photo and different in another.?" Another trick of the imagination. I haven't changed the tying on the pouch. Maybe the critters have, but not I!
Oh darn Sybil, Does this mean we're not playing anymore?Hmmph (Sound of Pelle pouting) LOL, thats okay. I will remain curious though because I still had more ideas.
Play away. If you actually land on the answer, I will tell you. Not likely to happen but have at it! :)
Getting rather long, time to start a new thread . . . #16 is here: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/758643/
