Help, I feel like a blooming idiot!
Someone asked me to take a look at a particular
post. I have the number, but now what shall I do with it?
I even tried visiting any post and changing the url to reflect
the correct post number, to no avail.
Could someone please tell me where the 'search by post number'
box is?

Finding a post by the number?
I don't think there's a search function specifically for post numbers, although you could try pasting it into the forum search box and see if that brings it up. The other thing you can do is click on the post number in any thread, then look in the address bar in the page it takes you to, and it'll have a long string that ends in pidxxxxxxx where xxxxxx is the post number, if you replace those digits that should take you to the post you want. If it doesn't work, then the person probably copied the number wrong. Also, since they didn't give you a link, chances are the post they were pointing you to was one farther up in the same thread, so you could always look for it that way too--go into the thread you were in, then in Internet Explorer if you go to the Edit menu, you'll see and option called "Find on this page", paste the post number into the box that pops up, then it'll look on that page and find the post number if it's there.
Hello Ecrane,
I did try replacing the url with the correct post number, and I did
try to find it by the search box.
Tried the Edit and find as well.
Sigh. Many thanks.
My guess is that they copied the number down wrong then. I just tested the forum search and that doesn't work but when I try both the other ways I mentioned it works fine. When you tried replacing the URL, did you do that while you were viewing the whole thread, or did you click on a post number to open an individual post? You have to open the post itself individually to get the right stuff in the address bar to replace the post number, if you're in the thread then it won't work.
Wuvie, try having the person 'copy' the URL and 'paste' it into a Dmail to you. Maybe then you will be able to click on it and it will take you there.
wuvie, if you right click on any post # and copy, then paste in a message box but then CHANGE the number to the one that you are trying to locate, it should work. Use the preview to check it out and see.
The other person should have just put a shortcut in the message for you, would have been so much easier!
I think wuvie already tried something similar to that and it didn't work--I think the other person wrote down the post number wrong, otherwise one of the things she's already tried would have worked.
It's much easier to copy/paste the entire URL for a post or thread, than to copy the number of either of them.
And when you do that, then it becomes a hyperlink - which is also much easier for others to follow your trail ;o)
Hi folks,
An update, I was able to find the post, though I
have to admit, I feel stupid.
The post she was referring to was right in the
very same threaded discussion we were all having,
she just forgot to mention it was up above. LOL.
Here I was trying to find it by number and it was
right in front of me.
:-)
Don't ya just hate when that happens?? LOL! Did something similar today. I looked down to get my cell phone out of my case and it wasn't there! After looking for it for several minutes I realized it was in the pocket of my slacks!! Doh!!
Ah, yes, one of those 'where are my sunglasses' things.
On my head. LOL
Wuvie ~ you probably know this but if it is a long thread and you have a number or name to search for... in your computers' edit function ~ hold Control & type F or find on this page and type in what you are searching for. Makes it easier on my tired eyes. pod
Hi Pod,
Yep, I knew that, but the problem was that I did not know the
post she was referring to was right there in that thread. I felt
like such a goof.
LOL
Oh, I love the find function on Mozilla, love it, love it!
Like me, you're all suffering from A.A.A.D.D. If you don't believe me, take a look for yourself: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/740291/
LOL!!
Ha! Love that thread, heading that way to post!
Thanks! KM
