Pix,I have seen the female slinking around a couple of times. She is much more the size of a regular weasel, just a little bit bigger and dark brown or black. I saw the male one morning when I was making coffee. Three feet long and a long bushy tail. Ripped the heck out of that squirrel nest, leaves were flyin' all over. Had no clue what it was, made DH get up to see it because who's gonna believe a giant weasel. LOL The thing that makes the creepiest sound is the fox mating. OMG sounds like something is being murdered. It's just awful.
That is a mom and the kids, four of them. They came back a few days then didn't see them again.
Daily Musings - page 17
Al - great photo of the goldfinch AND the flowers....all of the foliage looks so deep green and shiny........very nice!
Ngam - watch those fishers if you have a dog or cat. They are fierce predators here, and the domestic animals disappear often. We keep Molly on a leash in the early morning and at dusk because of the fishers and coyotes. Ugh.
I agree. Fishers are extremely dangerous! Louise, I'm glad you have little Molly on a leash for her protection.
Fisher's got one of the neighbor's cats last year.....wasn't much left of him.
Ugh!!
That left a rather graphic picture in my mind!!
Sorry Candyce! Thats why I don't let my cat out of the fenced in part of the yard.
I don't want to think about it. We had coyotes a few years back, not recently but my sons kitty was taken by them I think. We have two adopted cats but they don't go out because of all the predators out there.
There've been reports of coyotes in my area even. I'm only an hour north of NYC. My DH is worried that they'll get our mini poodle. I keep telling him not to worry, he's contained inside a six foot fenced in yard. We don't have anything to worry about, right?
ngam, where is Norton? Anywhere near Milton?
x, Carrie
Sofonisba:
It depends on what the fence is made from. I've known coyotes in my area to scale a chain-link fence. Not to worry you. Just to inform you.
Carrie, south of you off of 495, next to Taunton. Have you ever been to Great Woods Concert Center? Norton town line is about 100 yards down the road.
It's a 6' cedar stockade fence. Hope it keeps 'em out.
Here's some daily musings for y'all... I've got black vine weevils. I'm musing about their demise.
Harper
Harper - This is a really painful subject to even think about, isn't it? I'd watch out for your little mini-poodle. Poodles and Bichons look a lot like rabbits, and I'm afraid I have known of predators ignoring whatever is in their path if they are hungry enough. Six feet may be high enough, but I'm not sure.
Candyce - glad to see a posting from you! By the way, everyone, wouldn't you know that my DH and I saw a fisher today in broad daylight?? We were heading to Amherst (NH)....closest Lowes to us, but it is quite a haul....but a pretty one. We made an adventure out of it. The fisher crossed the road right in front of us in a rural stretch.
Ngam and Pixie.....how sad! That would be my worst nightmare if that happened to Molly. Just last week my dear 98-year old friend lost her favorite cat that way. I'm just sick for her.
Speaking of Molly, Candyce, here's a new photo I took this morning of my completed Cuppatea garden. You can see Miss Molly doing her style of gardening on the porch.... I can't wait for these plants to fill out.......
Harper - 6 foot stockade....probably ok because the predator can't see inside it - unless it is in a tree nearby. If you are in a neighborhood, I wouldn't worry about it......Our farm is surrounded pretty much on all sides by forest, and our meadow is pretty open, so that's why I'm so cautious. We have lots of wildlife that follow an abandoned logging road right into the meadow. Mid-day, Molly hangs out with me in my garden area, but I'm much more cautious in the darker hours.
Sorry about your weevils....yuk!
Al - I like the circles you travel in!! Very cool! What is the flower?
I have a thread to get the actual ID - some hummingbird moth I think. It is on Black Knight butterfly bush there - it also liked the zinnias.
DonnieBrook - your cupatea garden is coming along nicely. Love the porch even more and I can see Molly does too. Eleanor
Yeah Louise! Nice new garden and Molly looks like a love. We are in a neighborhood here in the center of town. I don't even have deer come to my yard. My neighbors up the hill get them though. Here's my Shadow.
Al, I've seen a few hummingbird moths around here too. They like my stargazer lilies. I had a real hummer visit me daily while my monarda was in full bloom. I was never fast enough to catch it, though. It was my first hummingbird!
Cute dog Harper.
Looks like some albino pepper Andy ;)
The big bug is #2

Al - Thanks for the id......aren't those hummer moths cool? We only see them once in awhile here.
Harper - Shadow is adorable.....intelligent eyes...and I love his fish toy!
Eleanor - Thanks! It's been a fun adventure.
Andy - I've never seen a white pepper! Cool!
Pixie appears to have found the great Chineese deer hunting turkeys! I would buy some, if you're offering.
http://davesgarden.com/forums/p.php?pid=3819409
Dave, that deer is my DH old target practicing deer so it was ducked taped and set wayback. He still uses it and the new one too.
That was a good piece of plywood with targets on it but they blew it to smitherines, along with that deer. The new deer will be outback too by the end of Oct. once he can shoot again. You have no idea how luck those turkey were, DH is an excellent shot with a bow or a gun, so is DS. I can shoot, but I perfer not to, and the pull on the bow is a bit to stiff for me.
Cancel my order for your turkeys. Is your son available?
If your taking him hunting he will make himself available! This kid would rather be fishing, hunting, 4-wheeling, sno-mobiling, or jet-sking above anything else. He was never one to go to parties, rather go to bed early so he could get up and travel to Sunday River for a day of snowboarding. He'll be 20 in Oct. and will not miss a day of work because it lowers his paycheck and hence his activities for the week. His boss will have him go to work at 4am on the days they know it will reach 90. Then he will let them off work early and offer Josh his Jet Ski's for the rest of the day. The kid is a happy camper and the boss loves him!!
Pixie - Josh sounds like a neat "kid"....:)
Yeah, he does. :)
Thanks, I think he is, but im partial! LOL But I really do after watching the neighbors son...he's a year older and has been in jail or arrested at least 6 times. So yeah....I feel really blessed to have Josh as my son. Not to mention he is very helpful and kind hearted.
You go Momma Celeste!!!! That's wonderful. Sorry to hear about your neighbor's son.
Harper - Have you shaved Shadow yet?? Molly got a pretty close haircut herself..... :)
So it's not the best photo in the world - I was sitting at this gas station and this hawk drops down right in front of me. I'm sure Andy would agree with me on this one - wouldn't it be great if we didn't have to work and could just wander around like we're on vacation all the time and just take photos?
Al, when work is slow it's like a vacation just no cash flow.
Cool shot, I'm sure you had to be quick for that one.
I started Page 18 ~ http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/758165/
