Audio in PlantFiles, COOL!

Stockton, CA(Zone 9a)

I don't know how long this has been in place, but I really like it! I always wonder if I am pronouncing plant names properly, as most of my interaction with the names is in writing, so this is WONDERFUL! Thanks Dave for another great feature. :~)

OH! Wow! I think this was added just for me and I didn't even know I needed it! Thanks!

Super cooooool.......wonder if it's Dave's voice? Couldn't quite tell for sure....
Thanks!!!

Ipomoea and Antirrhinum....hm, now I know I've never even been close to pronouncing those right. Good feature. I'll have to go through my journal and make sure I'm not sounding like an idiot. Nearly made my mom's friend shoot coffee out her nose when I pronounced Heuchera "Hew-chair-a"

Las Cruces, NM(Zone 8a)

This is a wonderful addition! I've been going elsewhere on the internet for audio help on pronunciations, and it will be great to find this in PlantFiles without leaving home! Thanks so much!

I like it Dave. I'd love it if you could make a change or two. Is there any way the voice could enunciate a little slower? On some pronounciations I had to play the audio at least twice. Another alternative would be to pronounce it twice, once VERY SLOOOWWLY and once at normal speed.

Thanks for all that you do, and thanks in advance for any changes you're willing to make.

I'm glad ya'll like it. That's me in the recording. :)

You mean that's not the way you say it? lol

Thanks so much Dave. I too have made so many mistakes - now I'll sound like a real gardener!

I thought it was "Hew-share-a" too!! Now I'll have to go listen....

I just noticed this feature today...love it!

I'm calling it "The Pronunciator"!

Colorado Springs, CO(Zone 6a)

Lol. I just noticed it tonight too. Great feature Dave! Yea I was pronouncing Hew-chair-uh and pen-STAY-mon. Good thing I usually garden alone and only pronounce them in my head...

Colorado Springs, CO(Zone 6a)

Oh my gosh!! And clematis!! Wrong this whole time. It's not cle-Mat-is. Oh boy. I might oughta start over.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Very cool feature there Dave, but I believe that things are always going to be pronounced differently in different parts of the country. I will always say cle-Matt-is......just like everyone else I talk to over here. ;o)

I think it was in this month's issue of Horticulture there was some editorial discussion about plant name pronunciations--they were talking about how there are some mis-pronunciations that are so widespread that you'd be laughed out of town for pronouncing something the actual correct way, so now in the back of the magazine they're listing both the "correct" pronunciation, as well as the way it's commonly pronounced. According to them, we're still saying Heuchera wrong--they say the correct pronunciation of the first syllable is Hoy, but hardly anybody knows that and so Hew as the pronunciation for the first syllable is also OK. Another example they gave was Fuchsia--technically they said it should be pronounced Fook-see-uh (guess it was named after a guy named Fuchs who pronounced his name that way), but everyone always says Few-she-uh so they're now listing that as an OK pronunciation too.

I think Clematis has always been one where both pronunciations were pretty widely accepted, I think some parts of the country people tend to say it one way and other parts say it the other way.

True, Liz. The first one I hit was hibiscus. Apparently, it's OK to say "hy" or "hi" - the important part is the emphasis on the "bis." ??

How about Zinnia? My spouse is Texan and we say it completely different from each other. How do most people pronounce it?

Colorado Springs, CO(Zone 6a)

Good to know that I can keep pronouncing clematis the way I do. I don't think I could change if I tried.

I say Zinnia ZEEN ya. Is there another way?? Lol. I'm originally from Texas, so I wonder if your spouse and I say it the same?

Necedah, WI(Zone 4b)

Yes! you say it exactly the same!! My parents pronounce it zin-E-ah, but they are the same people who raise me to say hew-Chair-a, so I dunno if I can trust them.

Around here we say "cle-MATT-us" but I know the correct pronunciation is "CLEM-at-us" so that's how I recorded it for PlantFiles. :-)

That is just snazzy! I know a guy that pronounces it "Clee ma teese". I have to giggle when I say it the "right?" way, I imagine his pronunciation. Great, I can hear Dave say it in the plant files... Thanks so much, you're SO good to us!

OK, I'm looking at it but there is nothing to click on to hear it. What am I doing wrong? I've also tried loading it from a different browser with no better results.

Thanks,

Maggie

Does this help?

If it doesn't have a slider, Dave probably hasn't recorded the name for it yet.

There may still be some plants that don't have it--I know the first day I noticed it there were only a few plants that seemed to have it, and as time has gone on I've seen it on more and more, but it's possible that Dave's not done with all of them yet.

Here's a Plant Files entry that does have it, do you see it here? http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/32244/

This might be better.

Has anyone looked at the number of plants in the database lately? :-) This is a huge task and Dave deserves all the thanks he is getting here.

I don't see a slider bar at all, even on the ones that have been mentioned as having a recorded pronunciation. I'm using firefox. I'll try rebooting.

Thanks GTB & ECrane

Maggie
