can this be transplanted?

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

OK you tree gurus...I need advice ....please.......

My X-DH just bought his brothers house
In the very front there is one of those dwarf weeping trees that really irritate him
(course I really irritate him too so....LOL)

His solution is to hook a chain to it and his Pickup and rip the sucker out

I want to give it a fighting chance
I don't love the tree but I'm willing to move it to my house
Is there a way to transplant it?

He is also concerned about the roots being under his front walk

I know it would have to be cut way back
not a problem
It can wait till fall to be dug...which up here is next month........
I thought about digging around it so the roots are severed....but leave it in till fall
forcing it to form new roots before the move
Does that work?

Is the root system small ?
like the width of the canopy?
or is it much larger than I imagine and
I should just give it the last rites as its dragged behind a chevy?

WOW
it looks like cuzin" IT " from adams family.......

most of those shrubs from the first picture are going to get ripped out
he's sooooo picky

here's a shot of the trunk........
are you picturing a chain wrapped around it?

Weeping White Mulberry (Morus alba 'Pendula'). A not-very-attractive cultivar of an invasive species . . . I'd not make any attempt to save it.

If your going to move it I would wait till it goes dormant and trim it way back. I would dig around it cutting any long roots, I'm not liking the chain idea.

BTW I don't think that looks bad but I don't know much about those trees.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

well his original plan was to chainsaw it
but I told him No
cause I am not planting something new there with the trunk and roots there
(somehow I've become his gardening consultant)

If he rips it out with the truck it will be
doomed to the burn pile
I don't like that but if it cant be transplanted
then its future is dim

I swear he bought that house just so he could get rid of that tree

I just wish I knew how large of a root systen these types of trees have

Agreed.

Windsor, ON(Zone 6a)

It isn't a very expensive tree. But if he just cuts it down without removing the roots, he will be fighting suckers of straight Morus alba. and if they are left to grow, it will be an even bigger mess. Can I be nosey and ask if he's your ex, why are you helping with his gardening when he isn't taking your advise. It sounds to me like he wants to remove it to irritate you. I may be out of line, and if I am I apologize.

Holland, OH(Zone 5b)

Let him chainsaw it. The tree will do just as momo125 says it will - plague the ex DH forever. Sounds like a win, win to me.

Atmore, AL(Zone 8b)

You can buy these "weeping mulberries" at Wal-Mart every summer, I really don't think it's worth saving. The straight non-weeping version is generally considered a weed tree.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

You guys are too funny!!!!

If I hated him I would probably let him chainsaw it
pay backs are a ....well you know....LOL

But we are good freinds and are still...a...dating...LOL

Momo125
if he took my advice we would probably still be married

OK
now this qestion
if he hooks the chain to it
and rips it out
will the roots that are still in the ground send up shoots?
is the root system going to rip up the front walkway?

I have to make the front of the house look good 'cause
Chuck and his brother have bragged to neighbors about my plants
So now I gotta put my money(or plants) where their mouth is

Still working on the planting scheme but a bunch of sprouts coming up will really mess me up
I was going to replace it with a Japanese Maple....

would it be better to chainsaw it?
put some of that stump killer stuff on the trunk
and not plant anything there till the stump rots?

Windsor, ON(Zone 6a)

I think that if you "chain" it, you will avoid the suckers. What kind of sidewalk is it? If its interlock, I can see a problem, but if it is poured concrete, then it should be ok.

West Pottsgrove, PA(Zone 6b)

Maybe leave a hose dripping on it for a day or two to let it rip out more easily.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

It's pavers, done in a staggered pattern
shouldn't be too bad to lay them back in if they rip out
but I'd like to avaoid it if possible

would a good heavy rain work OK for dampening the soil?

Holland, OH(Zone 5b)

Please, pleaseee tell me how you are going to order "a good heavy rain". We're gonna dry up and blow away here. Total rainfall in the last six weeks has been a 1/2".

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I'm not gunna order it silly
if we get one thats when we'll yank it out

Wish I could send you all some rain
The first half of summer was real dry but rain everyday in the forecast....
so much standing water that the skeeters have had a population explosion

and we were just informed that that found EEE(eastern equine encephilitis,,,,cant spell)
in 9 pools of skeeters tested
1 less than a 1/4 mile from here
Health department has ordered spraying for tonite

dry summers we don't have these issues

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

If you want some water, we've got far more than plenty to spare . . . please take some. And some more. And then some.

My, my, my Resin! Saw some of the flooding on CNN this morning. Yikes! Mother Nature always has to remind us that the average, can and often does, come from extremes. My one wonderful visit to England was an astonishing introduction to the many parks and gardens. After safety and security for the people I certainly hope the flooded parks don't suffer much damage.

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Yeah, it's not been good . . . the old mediaeval abbey at Tewkesbury got flooded yesterday - last
time that happened, was 247 years ago. Latest damage estimates are about £5bn (US$ 10bn).

Fortunately for me, it's all at the other end of the country. It's been very wet up here, but no major flood disasters like down south.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I saw that on the news today
Unreal......

they had to postpone the spraying...because of rain in forecast
silly weathermen
Its clear skys and dry
I could have been outside sketter free.......
