Group hug to you too! I know.....everytime one of my seeds comes up I just talk to it and brag over my new baby! It is fun to get new plants! My back yard can attest to all of the fun that I am having! LOL. I do have room for a few more plants, but I've barely started on the sides and the front.....so we have lot's of room to go! I'm going to plant some of those seeds I have.
Good luck with the diabetes! Hope you can get it under control. Will keep you in my prayers.
Keep on gardening!!!!!!!!
It's beginning to look a lot like the Tropics!
Don that Mexican BoP is gorgeous! I don't like BoP's but that is to die for! Funny - I seem to always love the flowers from Mexico. I had the front of my house in Colorado covered with Mexican Primrose from March to September. People would stop and ask what it was and could they have some. After 10 years of that, my neighborhood started to have a distinctly pink caste to it during the summer. Where, how, what....details, I need details...I just gotta get me one of those!
Shari now you have trod on my toes..... Sabu was my first crush as a kid!(mine))))
About the elephants...once I took a wheel barrow up to where the circus has been to scab the elephant dung (the size of footballs)......under cover of darkness
sneaking back home.....hubby was out -I piled it into the boot of an old chevy in the driveway......Hubby sold and wrecked American cars.I figured I would go out very early the next morning and quietly hide these footballs in the compost...I was so excited at the thought of having Elephant poo in my garden....that I could barely sleep as I hugged this terrific secret all to myself......early in the morning I awoke to chains rattling and a noise I was familiar with. A Tow Truck.I quickly dressed and ran outside and it was gone!!!.....the old chevy with a load of those wonderful "footballs ".......evidently Hubby had sold it and it had been waiting to be towed away to the new owner.....never told hubby ...don't know what they thought at the other end when they opened that boot....but to this day I still feel ripped off...and think of it as the great Elephant fertilizer heist! #^*#**.I think an elephant ...besides being a great pet- would keep me in all the" you know what "that I could ever use......So yes I would love an elephant....would have liked Sabu too....now Corky went on to become one of the Monkeys didn't he?
and Howard (Don) didn't Mareen go on to have a little girl called Mia with a fella called Farrow? or do I have her mixed up with another ....Tarzan was something no one missed ...but I wanted to be Sheena ...queen of the Jungle....figured I might run into Sabu I guess.I love that tree but can't grow your Mexican "Bird of paradise" ha ha ha..........Howard (Don ) you take care of the diabetes.....my husbands family is riddled with it ...want or need recipes or advice....just sing out won't you.......uh oooooo -in the jungle the mighty jungle the lion sleeps tonight.....
sorry Shari but I guess...I am a lost cause * giggling*
Hey hey were the Monkees,yep!
Until he took the last train to Clarksville!
And he is a Avid gardener as well, saw him on one of those Gardner shows celebrity gardening on HGTV!
Yes Mia married Frank Sinatra.
Then woody allen.
Also had crushes on Myrna Loy,June Allison.
Ah! The tokens!!!
Tropicman, those plants are gorgeous! I told my friend the other day that it was going to happen to us, but I was just kidding!!!!!!!!! Those really have covered your house!!!! LOL If you don't mind I'd like to borrow the picture to email, my friend and say, yep see, you waited tooooo long to come visit. She'll get a kick out of! We were co-workers before I retired!
Chrissy....Crazy Chrissy!!!!! That is hilarious! That is the funniest gardening story I've heard in a while! I was about doubled over in hysterics!!!!! ***giggling!*****
I'll have to tell my Mom that one. She used to always be doing crazy things when she was young. I'm forever dragging something home, but never elephant poo!
That is a riot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did you ask your husband who he had sold the car to or if it was to be salvaged....etc? I would have been dying to know what happened to it......on the other hand....maybe best left alone! Are you sure he doesn't ever read these posts? LOL! Chrissy you made my day! They say that laughter is the best medicine!!!!!!!!! Well I really had my dose today! HAHAHAHA
Now it's going to take a while to calm down to go to sleep....That is soooo funny!
Yep, Craaaaaa-zy Chrissy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Snap Snap 77 Sunset Strip!! Oh elephant poo.....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Mexican Bird of Paradise-Yellow. I wasn't aware there was a yellow. I bought the red and the pink seeds. Red germinated, pink didn't. Will have to look for yellow seeds. Tropicman, are they easy to germinate or did you obtain a plant. Very lovely.
turn up the vibes on your hi-fi and take a trip into your past

Tropicman I have heard of secret gardens.....I think you have a secret home....
great privacy ......such lovely privacy....did you always love the tropical theme or did it just evolve? Did you work to a plan or was it (like most of us) ooooh just gotta have it?.......if you could save only one treasure what would it be?......hmmm so ok that is a cruel question ...I take it back.If you could save only 5 what would you save.I am being very quiet and will try not to wander off away from your lovely
suburban nest .......I love to think of you sitting in your secret magical home...looking out of the windows and being able to go to any tropical place in the World that you care to imagine...... (firmly keeping the mouth shut)
It has taken me a couple of hours to get over that amazing site scooterbug my husband has sold a lot of those cars (those models) and even though I am an Ozzy I drive "yank tanks".....my first a big black batmobile dodge all chromed fins
and push button gears......I also had a "nipple pink" * blushing* 59 caddy that had a massive engine .....a convertable....all fins and pointy bits....hubby sold it to a "big Pop group" and regrets it now because they are worth a small fortune
.....the songs on that site really ....messed with my head .......it was like the ongoing soundtrack that plays in my silly head......what a spin out.....my sister lost her hubby about 4 years back -he was a big wheel in the hot rod club scene out here....he would have been looking on down with a big smile. He
had over 300 of those hottys turn up on the day of his funeral.....(don't smoke folks)
Those mexican birds of paradise....what are they? our birds of paradise are the strelitzias....I went to the site...with no luck (or my head is still not working)...but couldn't see a name (botanical)
Shari home page? ....do you mean your personal site or somewhere here on DG
that I haven't found yet....still exploring.:)
Got visiters coming... back later.....See I can be quiet! not a peep...not even one song from American Graffiti........:)
*snort*
Chrissy, Shari's article is on the DG Home page under Today's Article, just caddycornered to the right of the Logout. You have to click on the title and then it opens up the whole article. Took me a minute to find it! It's worth reading!
I'm so proud of you Chrissy. You were sooooo well behaved and stayed focused on the subject! I'm sure it must have been difficult for you, but you did a good job!
My GD thought it was so funny that she insisted I tell her other Granny when I took her home this evening!!!!!! That is just hilarious....you can tell us your stories anytime!!!! We all need humored! Snap Snap
Oh Chrissy!!!!!
Yes I've always love the tropical theme.
I
As I weld every day at work,I picture my gardens, and what I'd like to plant every year, and how I would change the design,in which I do every year to some degree or another.
Nothing says Bora Bora,more than a banana,a palm,a hibiscus,fragapanni,and the tahiti
gardenia!!!! I have to add one more the giant Taro!!!
I can picture myself day dreaming of being with Charles Laughton, and Clark Gable,The famous Captain Bligh and Fletcher Christian, collecting the breadfruit trees, and potting them up to take back to Merry Ole England!!!!
Yellow bird of paradise also known as The Pride of Barbados!!!
Caesalpinia Pulcherrima.
Grown usually in the west indies.
Scooter my first car was the 49 chevy coupe, push button ignition, sky blue was the color, girls love that car, then I moved up to a muscle car,58 olds, big powerful engine, gas hog too!,Then I moved up to one of the cars in the web page right down to the red color, the 63 impala chevy convertible, now that baby pick up the ladies!!!!!
What I'd give to have those cars back!!!
Chevy Impala !!! WooHoo! That was my baby! Loved that car!
If you don't see the Articles Header...you may have to go to your preferences page and sign up for it. No big deal. But you may want to do it....some of the articles are great!
We still sell those cars ...the last one sold went to a company doing an ad for optus (big computer broadband supplier joint)....most of these cars go to people doing videos for pop songs....move makers...advertising....etc
I am still getting over people laughing about my stolen elephant poo story... here I was telling a sad tale ....of my treasure being swiped from under my very nose and everyone laughs.....
Oh tropicman ......love those old black and white flicks and I remember as a child being terrified of that awful Captain Bligh....
I am afraid that all though I adore the tropics....I get very seasick- my father is a prize winning Fisherman ...but I just can't do boats (even threw up on the Sydney Ferry as a child)....he fishes in Botany Bay and has a secret place (over an old shipwreck) ssshhhh......I grew up 10 mins walk from Brighten Beach...(Botany Bay)....spent every weekend swimming...a lot of time playng under the Norfolk Island Pines that line the sand overlooking the Beach ...When the sharks came too close we would have to leave the water. We used to slide down the old mounted cannons there.....so even though I did not grow up on an island I was a child of the sea. All of those characters in your imaginings were part of my childhood too..... my dad used to imagine himself to be Loyd Bridges.....in Seahunt......who knew that he would one day have all of his sons go on to be so successful in the movie business.Well then where would we be without all of those ships that bought back all of those wonderful things from places far and near....not only foods but the flowers too!....I remember reading somewhere that tulips were so highly thought of -that a rare one could cost cost the price of a grand castle.....but they evidently went out of fashion after a big frenzy. They must of been amazing times....all of those new things flooding in (what do breadfruit taste like?...is it because they taste like bread or just because they look like one).....and all the funny ideas that people had about the various new objects.
Your choice of your 5(6) plants are the tropics as you say...we can't get the tahitian gardenia in NSW but I grow the Gingers instead.....and lots of the Professor Pucchi gardenias (huge flowers....huge fragrance to match)
No one else has chosen their five to save...come on folks....you can only save 5 of your plants which ones?......mine my Charles Austen Roses (sorry not very tropical but love them too much) what do you mean I can only have one....oh well ok... Celebration....happy golden colour... heavenly fragrance strong healthy rose.
My peach Angel's Trumpet.....White ginger....my mandavilla Laxa (perfumed)....my kentia palm .....whew that was hard!
Borra Borra ...(hmmmm theme from Wipeout.........only thinking... not singing :)
No... Moorea...like it much, much better than Bora Bora. Hmmmm , sad elephant poo story? Uh Huh! Like you didn't enjoy sending us all into gales of laughter! Right!
5: My double peach hibiscus, Pikake, Bird's Nest Fern, Alamanda Cathartica, and my orchids. These are just my fave 5 today. In another month, if all goes well, I may have blooms on my Aphelandra Sincariana and my Pacystachus...in which case all bets are off.
We always called it Sea Grunt....but my fave was Flipper. Wanted a pet dolphin to play with my pet elephant!
Singing "Bali Hai will find you, anytime, anywhere. In your mind you hear her call you, come away, come away.....Bali Hai, Bali Hai, Bali Hai".....
Okay, okay. When I finally get my pet elephant, I will freeze dry some poo and send it to you....will that make up for laughing?
Sorry chrissy but I am laughing my head off over that story too!!!
YES!!!! Wealth, Fame and Fortune will soon be ours! Now, all we need is the elephant. Hmmmm, tis a poser......
Oh no! Baby Elephant walk is now running through my head! Chrissy!!!!!!
:-)
Love the beat to Elephant walk!!!!
Professor Pucchi gardenias, thats a new one for me!!!
Shari,I can't tell you how many times I've killed alamanda cath.
I love the color yellow!!!!!
Chrissy,we have something in color besides tropical plants,I too,get sea sick, went sea fishing off the coast of florida,40 years ago ,never forget that day!!!!
How about Captain Blood with Errol Flynn, and the very pretty Olivia DE Havilland.
I am just starting with a new greenhouse and am in zone 9
http://www.rader.org/garden/greenhouse.htm
Tropicman in your Wichita, KS (Zone 6a) greenhouse. Would you please advise me on the air conditioning of your winter greenhouse to save all of those great plants
Tropicman in your Wichita, KS (Zone 6a) greenhouse
what temp do you keep your greenhouse heated to ?
do you keep several fans running for circulation
thank you
Jim Rader from Sacramento CA
Hey Jim,
With the palms and foliage plants,I keep the temps 55* at nite,75* during the daytime hours.
About the same with flowering hibisus and passion vines, maybe a little warmer during the daytime, they love the heat.
Crinums and other bulbs, bananas ,roots as gingers 45* to 70*
Always keep fans 24/7,and keep the floors wet most of the time to keep the humidity high,
I use the rubber roof liner, that they also use in ponds on my floors, the black attracts the heat
keeps the greenhouse warmer.I try to mist the plants as often as possible, every day
if I can.
I really just want to keep the plants alive and healthy and not so much the growing aspect.
Don
Aha...here yall are.....found you! Tropicman, have they been behaving over here?
Oh elephant poo! HAHAHAHA! Elephants live in Florida at the Ringling home.. So if you get someone from there, you can get some elephant poo! Or at the ZOO......see that rhymes!
My favorite five tropicals are #1 Plumeria for sure, #2 my Darla Anita daylily,
sego palm, hibiscus, and banana trees. I have others, but those are my favorites.
Wipeout was a favorite tune of mine! My very first teen years were on Oahu, so surfer music was my favorite, beachboys, Jan and Dean, The Righteous Brothers. My first date was to Waikiki Beach. We had to double date, and we remained friends for quite awhile. Oh the memories!!!!!!!!!!! That is why the fondness for tropicals still to this very day.
Tropicman did you ever have any tropical experiences to inspire that gorgeous garden of yours?
