Here in Kansas!
It's beginning to look a lot like the Tropics!
Thank you
I want the look ,where you live and garden!!!
I love the tropical look and feeling!
Don
Toto, we're not in KS, we're in Hawaii !!!!!
Pic #4, what is plant behind bird cage, looks like some type of curly philo?
My fave is pic #2 with the purple castor bean.
I'll try to post something today, but would never compare w/ your paradise.
PS: Do not remember the LA lady. May have been a little before my time.
Beautiful garden, it looks even better than most of our local gardens here in Hawaii!
Thanks Guys!!!
Vossner, that is Lime Green colcasias and a blue leaf Alocasia,or Xanth,I can't remember
for sure>
I think your weather is a colder than mine in San Antonio, right? Do most of these plants stay out in the winter or do u over winter in a greenhouse or something? I've been trying to create the same type of area in one part of my yard but I dont want to really plant alot of them in the ground for fear of loosing them to cold weather. I think some might come back up like the Cannas and some Bananas but what about he different Elephant Ears and other tropical plants? I'd hate to loose so many plants. Do u cover any of them that stay out? Sorry for so many questions but I really do need some help.
Thanks Chrissy,I know the southern hemisphere is the coldest on record, since the early 1900's,snowed in Buenos Aires in early July.
Anaid,
Yes I overwinter most of these in a greenhouse, but some of the bulbs stay in the ground, like crinums, and running elephant ear, even a few alocasias stay in the ground, even some palms,Trachyscarpus, wagg, T.Fortunia, sago palm, sabal minor, butia .pindo palm.
All the cannas stay in the ground, bamboo is hardy,I cover with lots of leaves and straw,if you can keep the ground from freezing most plants will return, with a little protection.
Castor beans I plant by seed early april and will be 20ft by Fall.
:) "thanks T-man"
Beautiful T-man! You look more like the tropics than I do! Great job!
Thanks Islandshari,
That was my goal.to make everyone think the tropics when they see my gardens!!!
Don
Jasmine,Gardenias,Brugmansias.Passiflorias,Crinum lillies.
Spearment!!!
Just a few!!!
White gingers haven't bloomed yet,Hostas are blooming now, smell like jassmine also!!!
Chrissy - that's not fair! I tried pinning people down to a favorite, and all I got was a lot of grief. No one wants to offend the other beauties in their gardens by picking a favorite.....at least that's what they all told me!
LOL!
The fragrance of the plumerias when in bloom are just wonderful!!!!
The roses, are very hard to beat as well!!!!
The Easter type lillies and Imperial lillies make me happy.
But,my yard is fenced, and growing all around the house is a wonderful white and yellow flower honeysuckle,Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
that is very fragrant early in the morning and late at nite that just drives me crazy !!!
And it is in bloom from early May to October, and you can't ask for more than that!!!
I use to chat with a wonderful lady from Perth a year or so ago,and she and her husband
retired and moved to the very south of the Island and bought 25 acres of bush, seems like it was 250 miles from where they did live, any how they were going to plant a paradise of plants there, they had a beautiful home just east of Perth up on top of a hill, and you could look down on the Ocean and Perth,LOL,I thought she lived in paradise her house was surrounded by those huge birdnest ferns and, blue agapanthus, and tons of the orange
flowering Clivias,oh and the Eucalyptus trees!!!!
Come on now Don, don't be so quiet and shy, let those feelings out. LOL! I sure love your enthusiasm!
We have a pink honeysuckle that is a bush instead of a vine. I love it!! And I want your garden!! And the jasmine! I have one but I can't smell anything unless I bury my nose on the flower and I can just get a hint of a smell. Enough to drive me crazy! lol
1....2...3 GO!!! LOL. Look at our timing!
Well you asked for it! (I know I will forget some )

Around 10pm,my queen of the night, eppipylumm, opens to indice you to come smell her huge white blossoms,,,,which is really hard to do,when your caught up in the night yellow blooming cestrums fruity fragrance,or the jasmine like yellow 4 o'clocks overwhelming luring
sweetness!!!
The smell of love is defineatly in the air!!!!!
My sunroom is on the south side of my home, and when there in bloom, you can smell the fragrance clear at the other end of the house!!!
I keep trying to get more fragrance in my yard but it seems that unless it is tall phlox it won't grow and have fragrance at the same time. lol. But I keep trying. Have the gardenia and a jasmine now.
Summer Breeze makes me feel fine ....blowin through the the jasmine in my mind...la la la......ooooh green with envy!!!! frosted crunchy bits everywhere....BUT...the the spring jasmine on the sheltered side of the house is just stared to flower and the osmanthus fragrance is wafting all over so I can't whinge can I ...I am loving all the folk loving their sweet smells!
Gee - what great lyrics....someone should right a song like that! Ha! Never fear Chrissy - Spring is right around the corner! hang in there child!
Winter in the sub tropics must be rough!!!!LOL
Hmm wondering how old everybody is to remember that song!!!!LOL
"Old enought to remember how, and young enought to do it well". My Dad's answer to everything! Especially young nurses!
You are getting a bit cheeky now...(after all I was just a kid lol).....flowers in her hair flowers everywhere!!! la la la.....my only comment - we were the lucky ones....what a wonderful time we grew up in! .........and we still adore our flowers!!!......wether you realize it or not somewhere in our youth we sniffed a beautiful flower and fell in love with that wonderful feeling.....and got hooked on gardening for life.........can you remember the first time you did that? my first memory was a golden ginger ....hhhhmmmI could not believe something growing out of the dirt could smell like that!.....so I would go sniffing around all the wonderful flowers then.......nothing has changed for me....I still feel like that 5 year old everytime I smell a beautiful flower! What flower fragrance do you remember as a child?
Chrissy! Is that really you? How adorable! I grew up in San Francisco, and I can remember climbing trees, and playing with my brothers. I would pick lots of different weeds and flowers to "feed" them. I would cure their aches and pains (in play, of course) with my different potions.....must have been a garden-witch even way back when I had no idea what one was! Then as a teen, I was truly a "flower child"...."When you come to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair"....ahh yes, sun, flowers, the 60's, music and dirty feet....
