Clematis photos

Anyone remember Groucho Marx's You Bet Your Life? Lots of cigars and ducks there. Was the duck that appeared when you said the secret "woid" smoking a cigar?

I do remember Groucho and the show but I don't recall the duck smoking a cigar.

Pirl beat me! I sleep a bit later on the weekend, if the kids allow. I remembered the smoking duck.

I grow my clematis in and amongst my shrubs, too. Well, I have only ONE clematis, so it's easy to do.

Here's my Pistachio in the honeysuckle bush.

You're doing something right with that one, Candyce! I've planted three of them and have three deaths to report. I did get one flower one time: yipee.

Pirl:

To be honest this is my third attempt to grow any kind of clematis. My first one was a success and still is, as far as I know. (It's gracing the deck rail at my ex's house!)

The year before last I had one bloom on a very pretty jackmanii (sp?) and when winter came I potted it up and brought it into one of the colder rooms in the house. By February it was sprouting again. I waited to set it out and when I did, it died. *sigh*

This is one that was given to me by my SIL this year for Mother's Day and it was in a gallon pot and very large. When it finished blooming after Mother's Day I simply put it into the ground underneath the honeysuckle bush and mulched its 'feet' pretty well. Three weeks ago I gave it a shot of rose food. Now it has dozens on blossoms, and it has grown to be almost as tall as me.

I can't wait to see if it will come back next year. I have learned that it's one of the hardier ones (Group 3), which means it should be OK with the right amount of mulching and if I wait to prune it until next spring.

This one will be another learning process. But then, aren't they all?

Yes, all of gardening is a learning process!
