I know some of you really enjoy clematis on this board. I would love to see up close pics and pics of the full plant if and when you get around to it. I have become an addict - yes I am also taking part in the clematis forum but I would like do your goods!
I am also thinking of building a pergola so next sprind I want to focus on buying taller growing clematis that migh grow over top the pergola...any suggestion on what kinds of clematis I should be looking for?? TIA.
Clematis photos
Sunset, this one took several years to finally not wilt and look good. I think it saw the shovel coming for it.
I also have some first year clems: Venosa Violacea which I have posted a pic of previously, and Betty Corning, Avante Garde, Wisely and Rosemoor. None of these have bloomed except VV which is very vigorous already.

Beautiful ngam - such a pretty shade of blue. this is Elsa Spath. It's not very big yet. It's in the creeping stage according to Victor - second year for it. First year sleeps, second year creeps, and third year leaps!! I'm just starting out with growing clematis. They are spectacular flowers and have fallen in love with them also. It's all Victor's fault for posting his awesome pics of them. Eleanor
Sorry for 'hooking' people! They're a worthwhile addiction though. Dawn, the pergola, depending on the size, could be a problem. Remember they do have to be pruned. Make sure you can easily and safely do it with your size pergola. I am planning a pergola also but will have some removable shade set-up for the top.
Such a pretty shot Eleanor. Mine is maybe three or four years old but has suffered this year from the express elevator weather we have had. It still keeps blooming through everything and is a good selection I think.
Don't forget to try some night photos of them - they look very different but still gorgeous.
You don't need to appologize for getting us "hooked" on clematises (is that the plural). I just wish I had more places to put them!! Eleanor
ngram - just beautiful. I really like the look of the Elsa Spath....
grammyphoeb I love that keep colour of the Niobe.....I have a Nelly Moser too and I love her.
Niobe is a favorite. I planted it with Henryi many years ago and liked it so well I am training two new ones to flank my Iceberg climber. I think with the white of Henryi accenting the rose, Niobi has great color (henryi's center's complement too)

Just gorgeous rsquared! I love the combination....
Grow them through your shrubs! That's where 95% of mine are planted. I don't like to look at an empty trellis (until they reach the top) or one with dead vines.
rsquared - I hope my Niobe will look like your's someday!! Eleanor
Thanks grammy. I think you will. I have done little to it. I just let it go. I wish that Henrryi had as good a year as Niobe always seems to.
I want more clematis, but need space.
My plan is to restore about 100 feet of a 120 year old cast iron cemetery fence I purchased. I want to plant more clematis on it, including a Sweet Autumn Clematis (terniflora). My DH is an engineer and wants the fence perfect. I told him to let it go because my plan is to get so much clematis going you will only see the fence in the snow...and who wants to stand in the snow to check out a fence. LOL
Aha - Rose now I understand the screen name even more - an engineer hubby. What type is he? I am an EE, though a stay at home dad these days.
EE, EE, EE - doesn't that sound like monkey-talk?
He is ME and one of my sons is majoring in mechanical engineering and pre-med at college. My 16 year old twins sons too are looking into math, science engineering career fields. I am surrounded. My husband laughs and tells everyone that I am the most an....ly retentive person in the house though....might be true. It's not just an engineering thing LOL.
Rose
Wow - good luck to all of them!
Don't want to tell you how long I pondered Rose"s "He is me and one of my sons..." response. Alter ego's, spiritual connections, and weirder things came to mind before mechanical engineer.
Too much psychobabble training Dave! Sometimes a duck's a duck.
I thought it was a cigar!
Depends on which end you're gazing at.
Imagine old Sigmund. Phallic, phallic, phallic, oh, I smoke those: cigar!.
I'll refrain from typing what comes to mind.
I was checking a neice's paper in her MSW program. She had referred to Dr. Fraud! Now that's a Freudian, I mean Fraudian, slip.
Maybe she's not quite convinced.
You "guys" are a riot...no pun or Freudian slip intended...you just make me laugh.
Rose
What if the duck is smoking the cigar? Does the collective smoke go straight to the Jung?
Groan! Jung or old, it's unhealthy for ducks to smoke.
